Lois Johnson
Lois Ione Johnson, 90, of Silverdale died Aug. 5, 2002, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 18, 1911, in Tacoma to Warren and Nellie (Rush) Whittaker. She graduated from Port Washington Bay Union High School in Silverdale in 1929.
She married
James "Jim" Johnson in 1931. The couple lived in Silverdale throughout their marriage.
Mrs. Johnson was employed as a reporter for the Silverdale Breeze and the Bremerton Searchlight. She also worked as a buyer for Bremer's Department Store and went on to become a manager with Home Interiors in Dallas until her retirement.
During World War II, she served as a Red Cross Red Lady and as a Civil Defense volunteer. She was active in both Silverdale United Methodist Church and Silverdale Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Johnson and her husband loved to travel and spent many winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. They camped and traveled throughout the United States.
She was a member of the Silverdale Garden Club. She enjoyed flower arranging and fishing.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Warren Johnson and his wife, Kathy, of Anacortes; a daughter, Sharleen Foerster and her husband, Karl, of Apache Junction; five grandchildren, Vikki Smith, Terri Madison, Sherri Larson, Laurie Dimock and Dean W. Johnson; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, also at Lewis with graveside services following at Mountain View cemetery in Silverdale.

Sam Bach
Samuel Alton "Sam" Bach Sr., 78, of Silverdale died from complications of diabetes Aug. 3, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Cle Elum to Otto W. and Emma E. Bach. He was a 1942 graduate of Ellensburg High School.
Mr. Bach served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He married
Billie Elaine R. Hanson on June 14, 1949, in Ellensburg.
After his military service, Mr. Bach became a rancher. He went on to complete an automotive technology apprenticeship at Kelleher Motors in Ellensburg. He worked as an automotive technician for 30 years with Kelleher and later in Bremerton for Bennett Ford and Parr Ford, retiring in 1979.
He enjoyed RVing with his wife. Other interests were Western movies, watercolor and acrylic painting, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Samuel A. Bach Jr. of Seabeck and Bryant A. Bach and his wife, Michelle, of Silverdale; four daughters, Laura R. Erixson and her husband, David, of Silverdale, Diane L. Newman and her husband, Grant, of Seabeck, Lynn A. Goller and her husband, David, of Kauai, Hawaii, and Nanette L. Ciganik and her husband, Jim, of Poulsbo; a sister, Leslie A. Nixon and her husband, Russell, of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, John and Chris and his wife, Daisy, a sister, Emma Gable, and an infant sister.
Viewing will be from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. memorial service Friday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A potluck follows at the family home. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Pamela Shutes
Pamela Diane Shutes, 44, of Bremerton died July 27, 2002, in Silverdale.
She was born March 11, 1958, in Bremerton to Malcolm D. and Diane (Drinkwine) Shutes. She graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1976 and from Olympic College in 1978.
She worked as a nurse.
She excelled in sports, having played with the Tiger Stripes softball team. She was also an accomplished visual artist.
Survivors include her mother, Diane (Drinkwine) Buch of Poulsbo; two brothers, Kevin Shutes of Poulsbo and Scott Shutes and his wife, Molly, of Seattle; a sister, Suzanne Kettel and her husband, Craig, of Bremerton; two stepsisters, Linda Luckerath of Poulsbo and Mary K. Welch and her husband, Keith, of Bremerton; an aunt, Sharon Anderson and her husband, Ken, of Bremerton; two nephews; three nieces; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Brownsville Yacht Club. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Richard Thatcher
Richard William Thatcher, 79, of Poulsbo died Aug. 1, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 9, 1923, in Shaw, Ore., to Pearly "Pat" Granville and Edith Ruth (Getting) Thatcher. He graduated from high school in Salem, Ore.
He married
Margaret May Allen on Nov. 10, 1945, in Chicago. She preceded him in death in 1986.
Mr. Thatcher served in the Marine Corps from 1941 to 1945, achieving the rank of sergeant. He participated in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, the New Georgia Operation, the consolidation of the Solomon Islands, the Okinawa operation and the Philippine Islands operation.
He worked at Boeing for 32 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1982.
Mr. Thatcher was an accomplished furniture maker. He also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include a son, Patrick A. Thatcher and his wife, Ellen, of Renton; two grandchildren, Karilee L. Hayden and her husband, Brian, of Pensacola, Fla., and Kyle S. Thatcher of Renton; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb D., Sophia K. and Ethan Hayden, all of Pensacola. He also was preceded in death by his sister, Gwelda Hunt.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

James Nichols
James R. Nichols, 70, of Port Townsend died of cancer July 31, 2002, of his home.
He was born July 4, 1932, in New London, Conn., to Fred C. and Anna (Sutera) Nichols. He received his GED from Jefferson Union High School in Daly City, Calif.
He married
Hyun H. Chang on March 6, 1958, in Seoul, Korea.
Mr. Nichols served with the Army Special Forces from 1949 until his retirement in 1973 as a staff sergeant. He received a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.
After his retirement, he was employed as an explosives warehouse worker on Indian Island near Hadlock. He retired again in 1991.
Mr. Nichols was a member of the Roman Catholic church. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, James R. Nichols Jr. of Sequim, John F. Nichols of Oregon, Michael T. Nichols of Darrington and Jon L. Nichols of Belfair; a brother, Fred C. Nichols of Los Angeles; a sister, Joan Jackson of Elverta, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood cemetery in Chimacum.
James Walker
James D. Walker, 70, of Port Orchard of mesothelioma died Aug. 2, 2002, at his home.
He was born Jan. 21, 1932, in Sheridan, Wyo., to Jay and Alma (Hollenbeck) Walker. He graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane in 1950.
Mr. Walker served in the Marine Corps from 1950 to 1954, continuing as a reservist until 1958. He achieved the rank of staff sergeant.
He married
Faye Mason on July 31, 1954, in Spokane.
Mr. Walker worked as a carpenter in heavy construction and was a member of Carpenters' Union 1597 for 52 years. Since 1960, he co-owned J.W.S. Construction with Walt Seals, contracting in the Port Orchard area.
He was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Port Orchard, teaching Sunday school there. He also participated in Lutherhaven as a board member and youth counselor.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dean Walker and his wife, Jackie, and Todd Walker and his wife, Beverly, all of Port Orchard; a daughter, Cindy Ecklund and her husband, Larry, of Port Orchard; a sister, Dorothy Rose of Bothell; six granddaughters and one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha Minor, and a brother, Clyde Walker.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Marlys Flory
Marlys Elsie Flory, 64, of Bremerton died of congestive heart failure Aug. 4, 2002, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born Nov. 11, 1937, in Wilton, N.D., to Marshall and Elsie (Olson) Christiansen. She graduated from Days Creek High School in Days Creek, Ore.
She married
Marvin C. Flory on Dec. 21, 1955, in Stevenson.
Mrs. Flory received several awards from the state of Washington for her service as a corrections officer with Pioneer Human Services, assigned to the Helen B. Ratcliff House in Seattle. She also worked as a cook/waitress for several Bremerton restaurants for more than 20 years.
She was an avid embroiderer and loved collecting dolls.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Darnell M. Flory of Everett and Donald C. Flory of Monroe; a daughter, Debra E.; a brother, Connie Christiansen of Washington state; and two grandchildren, James Alford of Texas and Alysse Flory of Redmond. She was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Christiansen.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, also at Lewis. Burial will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Betty Ketchum
Elizabeth L. "Betty" Ketchum, 68, of Port Orchard and formerly of Garden Grove, Calif., died of cancer Aug. 3, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Dec. 4, 1933, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Harold and Virginia (Spaulding) Dixon. She graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne in 1951.
She worked for many years in newspaper advertising with the Orange County Register in Orange County, Calif., retiring in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Clayton Ernest Longacre of Port Orchard; two sisters, Eunice Campbell of Quinlan, Texas, and Judith Parrotte of Whitney, Texas; three grandchildren, Annieka, Jeremy and Shiloh; and a great-granddaughter, Aubrey Michelle. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael, and a daughter, Lynn Gale.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at William Sullivan and Sons Funeral Home in Royal Oak, Mich., with a graveside service following at 10 a.m. at Roseland Park cemetery in Berkley, Mich.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Gwen Alguard
Longtime Tracyton resident Gwen B. Alguard, 85, died Aug. 3, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Frank and Irene (McManus) Brodigan. She graduated with honors from Bremerton High School in 1935.
She married
Jack Alguard on July 8, 1939, and, in 1945, the couple settled in Tracyton where they raised their four children. Mrs. Alguard helped start a preschool and kindergarten in Tracyton and was a dedicated member of the Tracyton Elementary PTA.
After her children were grown, Mrs. Alguard fulfilled her longtime dream of attending college and becoming a teacher. In 1963, she graduated from the University of Puget Sound and taught third grade for eight years at Seabeck Elementary.
She was an active member of Tracyton Methodist Church, the American Association of University Women and the Manette Historical Society. She was a seamstress, oil painter and avid writer, participating in several writing groups.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Mark and his wife, Rosemary, of Palo Alto, Calif., and David and his wife, Sarah, of Tracyton; two daughters, Jan Flynn and her husband, Walt Fangman, of Bellevue, and Diane Williams and her husband, Randel, of Seattle; 15 grandchildren, Lara, David, Karen, Janet, Jennifer, Dalia, Peter, Mark and Johnathan, all of Seattle, Elizabeth of Bremerton, Dawn, David Eric and Dustin, all of Connecticut, Dylan of Virginia, and Graham of California; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Brodigan.

Daniel Coulter
Daniel William Coulter, 80, of Bremerton died July 27, 2002, of anemia and leukemia at Harrison Hospital.
He was born May 15, 1922, in Seattle to Charles S. and Jessie I. (Hansen) Coulter. He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1940, attended the University of Washington and completed an apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1944.
He married
his high school sweetheart, Louise Jean Hill, on March 21, 1943, in Bremerton.
Mr. Coulter trained as a pilot with the Army Air Corps from 1944 to 1946.
He went on to work as an electrician and nuclear inspector at PSNS for 30 years, retiring in 1970. He then worked as an electrician at Boeing, retiring again in 1987.
Mr. Coulter played drums professionally since the age of 8 and continued to play in bands throughout his life. He particularly enjoyed the music of the big-band era.
He was a member of the musician's union, the electrician's union, the Boeing ski and tennis clubs and the YMCA. He was a charter member of
St. Luke's Methodist Church, having been baptized there in 1962.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan Coulter and his wife, Jane, and Kenny Coulter and his wife, Paulette, all of Seattle, and Tom Coulter and his wife, Vicki, of Chandler, Ariz.; a daughter, Cheryl Niemann of Bremerton; 10 grandchildren, Kristin Stone and her husband, Brion, Gavin Coulter and his wife, Monica, Tawnia and Tammi Coulter, Tippi Mathison and her husband, Rob, Patrece Molina, Dian Mohler, Kim Benge and her husband, Bob, and Michaelangelo and Melissa Niemann; and eight great-grandchildren, Ronnie, Hailey, Zachary, Caitlin, Jocelyn, Winter, Mitchell, and Aidan.
A memorial celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Methodist Church, 1547 Sheridan Road in Bremerton. Inurnment will be at Mountain View cemetery in Silverdale under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
