Verne Hedahl
Verne Leroy Hedahl, 82, of Bremerton died Sept. 20, 2002, of congestive heart failure at his home.
He was born May 2, 1920, in Alamo, N.D., to Selmer George and Myrtle Gertrude (Petersen) Hedahl. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1938.
He married
Iris Fay Ward on Jan. 2, 1942, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Hedahl served in the Navy during and after World War II from 1944 to 1946 and in Korea from 1950 to 1952. He went on to work as a machinist planner and estimator at the Keyport Torpedo Station for more than 20 years, retiring in 1973.
He enjoyed home building, pottery making and fellowship with his many friends.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Loren Hedahl and his wife, Kim, of Silverdale and Roy Hedahl and his wife, Patricia, of Oregon City, Ore., three foster children, Mike Perry and his wife, Gloria, Joe Hedahl and his wife, Kathy, and Danielle Meyer; a brother, Orrill Hedahl and his wife, Ruth, of Silverdale; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Hedahl in 1919 and Merlie Winther in 1964.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo. Interment
follows at Mount Angeles cemetery in Port Angeles.
Molly Asp
Permelia E. "Molly" Lipsky Asp, 98, of Bremerton died Sept. 20, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born July 5, 1904, in San Francisco. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1922.
She married
Edwin Melvin Asp Sr. on Dec. 23, 1922. He preceded her in death in 1973.
Mrs. Asp enjoyed knitting and spending time with her family. She was a member of Bremerton Evangelical Covenant Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn J. McDonald and Diane L. Asp, both of Bremerton; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Edwin M. Asp Jr. of Lakewood, and a daughter, Bernice Wingard of Puyallup.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bremerton Evangelical Covenant Church.

Alf Watland
Alf Henry Leroy Watland, 92, of Poulsbo died Sept. 23, 2002, from complications of cancer at his home.
He was born March 21, 1910, in Keyport to Lewis Lauritz and Anna Meline (Vangness) Watland. He had attended Keyport School.
He married
Ruby Eleanor Sellers on Nov. 7, 1935, in Yakima.
Mr. Watland worked as a pipefitter leader and later as a planner-estimator in the public works department at the Keyport Torpedo Station. He retired in 1966 after 33-1/2 years.
He was a member of the Men's Club at Rolling Hills Golf Course. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, golfing and traveling throughout the world, especially to Europe, Australia and the Philippines.
Mr. Watland was the son of one of the founding families of Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. He had served the church in many capacities since becoming a member in 1937.
Survivors include his wife; a son, J. Gary Watland of Poulsbo; a daughter, Barbara A. Tinius and her husband, Bill, of Bremerton and Yuma, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Ken and David Kenaston, Merilee and Bryan Watland, Talia Hastie and Alita DeLaCruz; and 11 great-grandchildren, Angie, Natali and Jacob Kenaston, Nick and Amanda Danielson, Bryce and Mitch Watland, Ronnie and Cole Hastie and Melodee and Jessee Burt.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Deana Watland, in 1942 and a brother, Fred Watland, in 1991.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at Christ Memorial Church.

James Pruitt
James Pelma Pruitt, 79, of Poulsbo died Sept. 21, 2002, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
He was born Feb. 4, 1923, in Rule, Texas, to Alvy C. and James Esther (Wilson) Pruitt. He graduated from Rule High School in 1940, attended the University of Southern California-Los Angeles for two years and graduated in 1954 from the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif.
He married
Patricia L. Pennington on Oct. 22, 1943, in Lake City, Fla.
Mr. Pruitt served in the Navy from 1942 to 1971, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. He had been a naval aviator and test pilot, retiring in 1971.
He was the lead pilot for the first and only all-Navy crew of a P6M Jet Seaplane in 1959. He had graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Md., and is noted for having set a world speed record from the mainland to Honolulu in 1957.
Mr. Pruitt loved airplanes, cars and boats. He had been baptized in the Methodist church.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James P. Pruitt II of Bremerton; three daughters, Pamela L. Pruitt of Tacoma, Pennie L. Pruitt of Seattle and Patti A. Koch of Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Alvy Cecil Pruitt Jr. of Calistoga, Calif.; a sister, Mary Kolbert of Suisun, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jerrold L. Pruitt, and a grandson, Brett L. Ellis.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Saturday at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo. Interment
will be at Poulsbo City cemetery.
Gene Schoene
Arnold "Gene" Schoene, 66, of Belfair died Sept. 9, 2002, at Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma.
He was born July 24, 1936, in Burns, Wyo., to Arnold J. and Lena Pearl (Ramsey) Schoene. He attended high school in Burns and in Carpenter, Wyo.
He married
Twila June Helms on March 9, 1957, in Scotts Bluff, Neb.
Mr. Schoene served in the Navy from 1954 until his retirement in 1974, achieving the rank of cook second class. He was awarded medals for service in China, Korea and Vietnam.
He went on to work another 20 years as a security guard at the Naval Supply Center in Bremerton. He retired in 1999.
Mr. Schoene enjoyed many outdoor activities, especially fishing and hunting. Reading also was a favorite pastime.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Gene Schoene of Idaho Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Melinda "Mindy" Schoene of Belfair; a brother, Charles "Pete" Schoene of Calloway, Neb.; a sister, Gladys Ann Taylor of Plainville, Kan.; and three grandchildren, Michael Jr. of Idaho Falls and Daniel and Jeremiah, both of Belfair.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Ray and David L. Schoene.
A memorial service and potluck will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Eagles 4226, 80 NE Alder Creek Lane in Belfair. A military honors ceremony follows there at 5:30 p.m.

Stephfen Hurd-Newby
Stephfen Ulysses Rhuedarr Hurd-Newby, 3, of Bremerton died Sept. 20, 2002, from injuries sustained in a fire at his home.
He was born April 5, 1999, in Bremerton to Robert A. Newby and Dorothy J. Leilani (Hall) Hurd.
Stephfen greeted everyone he met with a "twinkle" in his eyes and a "smile." He enjoyed "hamming it up" in front of a camera.
He also liked camping and fishing. Purple was his favorite color.
He attended New Hope Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Kristina N. (Hall) Dosch of Gainesboro, Tenn.; his fraternal grandparents, Allan and Clara Newby of Brandon, Miss.; his maternal grandparents, Rocky E. Hall of Fort Worth, Texas, and Susan D. Dosch of Gainesboro; and his great-grandmother, Ann E. Jones of Gainesboro.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Mac MacGregor
Ronald "Mac" MacGregor, 54, of Bremerton died of cancer Sept. 19, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 22, 1948, in Bridgeport, Conn., to William and Marion (Monigle) MacGregor.
Mr. MacGregor served in the Navy from 1966 to 1969. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He went on to work as a commercial fisherman in Alaska for three years. At the time of his death, he had been employed as a bartender at Brother Don's Restaurant in Bremerton for the past 20 years.
His favorite pastimes were golf and karaoke.
A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Brother Don's Restaurant, 4200 Kitsap Way.

Shirley Thompson
Former Manette resident Shirley A. Thompson, 80, of Tucson, Ariz., died Sept. 15, 2002, in Tucson of cancer.
She was born June 1, 1922, in Bremerton to Maude and Arthur Bright. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1940 and attended the University of Washington in Seattle for one year.
She married
William Thompson. He preceded her in death in November 2001.
Mrs. Thompson worked as an inventory management specialist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1948 until her retirement in 1978.
She loved her four cats and two dogs. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and RVing to Mexico, California and the Northwest.
Mrs. Thompson was a member of the Unity Church in Tucson.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Grifford of Phoenix; a daughter, Becky Thomas of Tucson; a sister, Joy Carria of Bremerton; and four grandchildren, Carrie and Jamie Thomas and Jana and Jonathan Grifford.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Manette Community Church.
Vivian V. Cable
Vivian V. Cable, 80, of Port Orchard died Sept. 22, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
She was born Aug. 3, 1922, in Chicago. Her parents were Simon Stengel and Mildred (Dvorak) Mateicka.
She was educated in Buffalo County, S.D., attending a country school there through the eighth grade.
She married
Harvey W. Cable on Nov. 22, 1943, in Chamberlain, S.D. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Cable was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and crafts. She was a member of St. Gabriel Catholic Church, the South Kitsap Quilt Club and the Port Orchard Farmers Market.
Survivors include two brothers, James Mateicka of Winner, S.D., and Robert Mateicka of Port Orchard; four sisters, Linda Penberthy of Gresham, Ore., Patricia De Coteau of Milwaukie, Ore., Mary Lou Bracy of Rockaway Beach, Ore., and Gladys Stewart of Reliance, S.D.; and 14 nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. in Port Orchard.
Inurnment will be at St. Margaret's cemetery in Kimball, S.D.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.
Mike Mikami
Masaru "Mike" Mikami, 68, of Port Orchard died Sept. 20, 2002, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
He was born Nov. 4, 1933, in Waipahu, Hawaii, to Shigeru and Momoyo Mikami.
He graduated from high school and college in Hawaii.
Mr. Mikami married
Shizue (Oshiro) Mikami on June 26, 1967, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Mikami served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was an electronic technician with the U.S. civil service in Okinawa, Japan, for 30 years before retiring in 1991.
He enjoyed squiding, fishing and crabbing.
Mr. Mikami is survived by his wife; sons Eric Mikami of Okinawa and Ernest Mikami of Bellevue; and brother Mitsuru Mikami.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rill Chapel. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
