Jimmy Thompson
James E. "Jimmy" Thompson, 36, of Tahuya died Sept. 2, 2002, in Tahuya.
He was born Oct. 20, 1965, in Upland, Calif., to James F. and Robin (Woodfin) Thompson. He attended North Mason High School in Belfair.
Mr. Thompson worked as a merchant seaman, a commercial fisherman and a roofer. He enjoyed fishing and working on cars.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Robin and Jeffrey Conti of Port Orchard; his father and stepmother, James and Kathleen Thompson, of Posey Mountain, Ark.; a daughter, Raven, of Port Orchard; three brothers, Joshua Hughes of Silverdale, Caleb Hughes of Homer, Alaska, and Stephen Hughes of Port Orchard; a sister, Chara Boyer of Port Orchard; and grandparents, Glenn and Marge Woodfin of Brookings, Ore., and Gladys Thompson of Kewanne, Ill. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bud Thompson.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Harper Evangelical Church on Sedgwick Road in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of McComb Funeral Home in Shelton.
George Cates
George A. Cates, 87, of Bremerton died Sept. 14, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 17, 1915, in Brittania Beach, British Columbia, to Francis Adrian and Mary (Duggan) Cates. He graduated from Saint Martin's High School in Olympia in 1933 and later attended the Cornish School of Music in Seattle.
He married
Jeanette Leona Bartholet on Jan. 17, 1948, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton. They were married
54 years.
Mr. Cates owned and operated Cates Music in Bremerton from 1950 until his retirement in 1987. He also was a professional musician, playing both the piano and organ.
He performed with a dance band, The Playboys, for many years. The group often appeared at the Elks Club in Bremerton and at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Cates was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. He was a tennis champion (a lefthanded player) and an avid fisherman whose favorite "fishing hole" was in Ketchikan, Alaska.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, George Cates Jr. and his wife, Johanna, of Belfair, Shawn Cates and his wife, Sharon, of Poulsbo and Rory Cates of Everett; two daughters, Mary Anne Alexander and her husband, Dave, of Port Orchard, and Colleen Gorang and her husband, Rick, of Seabeck; nine grandchildren, Angela, Theresa, Aaron, Jared, Kelly, Brianna, Brock, Bryce and Rebecca; and four great-grandchildren, Jessica, Tyler, Hailey and Grace. A grandson, Kevin, preceded him in death.
A rosary will be said at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. A funeral Mass follows there at 11 a.m., with a 12:30 p.m. graveside service at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Lisa Brusatto
Marit Elise "Lisa" Brusatto, 60, of Silverdale died Sept. 14, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born July 24, 1942, in Oslo, Norway, to Bjarne and Erna (Sundfjord) Breen. She graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City.
She married
Frank Brusatto on Aug. 26, 1966.
He preceded her in death in 1985.
Mrs. Brusatto was a homemaker and caregiver. She was a member of the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo and the Roman Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Walter Bettilyon of Atlanta; five daughters, Therese Kelly of Lodi, Calif., Frances Bahrt and Clarice Bayne, both of Sitka, Alaska, Felicia Brusatto-Streit of Palmer, Alaska, and Katrina "Maria" Brusatto of Silverdale; nine grandchildren, Caitlyn Bettilyon, Anthony Farmer-Kelly, Wyatt Kelly, Erik, Ashley, Megan and Theodore Bahrt, Gregory Stocker and Alex Bayne.
A funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Interment
will be at Haven of Rest in Gig Harbor.

Caroline Ivers
Caroline Helen Ivers, 41, of Bremerton died Sept. 13, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born April 15, 1961, in Manchester, Conn., to Warren J. and Helen (Smith) Ivers. She graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1980.
She worked in computer-aided drafting at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 22 years.
Survivors include her mother now of Bremerton; a son, Brandon P. Nobles of Silverdale; two daughters, Heather M. and Tara A. Nobles, both of Silverdale; a brother, Warren P. Ivers and his wife, Debra, of Olympia; four sisters, Suzanne C. Baker and her husband, Al, and Gay L. Noerenberg, all of Bremerton, Jill J. Bekkedahl and her husband, Steve, of San Diego, and Kathleen M. De La Torre and her husband, Victor, of Hercules, Calif.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel followed by a funeral service there at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Ivy Green cemetery in Bremerton.

Adella Bowman
Adella Leona Bowman, 83, of Bremerton died Sept. 13, 2002, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 11, 1919, in Manchester, Iowa, to Dr. Leonard J. Bowman and Adella (Slack) Bowman.
She spent 24 years and 7 months in civil service at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.; NATTC in Millington, Tenn.; Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the commandant's office, base legal office; and the Naval Hospital and the supply department as a purchasing clerk. She retired in 1962.
Ms. Bowman enjoyed collecting foreign stamps and keeping a postcard album of her travels.
She was a Protestant.
A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Interment
will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton.

Hank Hood
Richard Henry "Hank" Hood, 76, of Hansville died Sept. 12, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born in Feb. 8, 1926, in Greenville, S.C., to Augustus Richard and Tessie Margaret (Lipscombe) Hood.
Mr. Hood married
Elaine Stewart Koivu on July 25, 1982, in Anacortes.
He completed his education in Greenville, S.C., and served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945. He worked as a merchant seaman with the Washington State Ferries and retired in 1986.
His grandchildren were his life, and he helped others when he saw a need.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tim Koivu and his wife, Peggy, of Indianola and Joel Koivu and his wife, Marilyn, of Indianola; five daughters, Kenyon Eley and her husband, Gary, of Jackson, Mich., Lois Henry and her husband, Steve, of Jackson, Linda Bacon and her husband, Tom, of Huntington Beach, Calif., Nancy Hart and her husband, Ray, of Snohomish and Debbie Smith and her husband, Charles, of Poulsbo; two sisters, Francis Vest of Travelers Rest, S.C., and Sadie Martin and her husband, Harry, of Sandston, Va.; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia and Inez, and his parents.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at The Stone Chapel in Poulsbo. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Suquamish United Church of Christ. Burial will be at the Hansville cemetery.

Erma Simpson
Erma Alice Simpson, 78, of Bremerton died Sept. 6, 2002.
She was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Laird, Saskatchewan, Canada, to David and Katrina (Epp) Friesen. She graduated from high school in Laird and from Briercrest Bible College in Caron, Saskatchewan, in 1949.
She married
Chet Simpson on May 6, 1949, in Laird. Mrs. Simpson was a homemaker who also worked with her husband in his interdenominational ministry, establishing rural churches in the Midwest and often serving in church nurseries.
Their church affiliation in Bremerton was with Lincoln Avenue Bible Church, where Mrs. Simpson also had served in the nursery. She enjoyed working with children, growing flowers and cooking.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Sheri Bryan and her husband, Scott, of Kingston, Joan Ferguson and her husband, Tim, of Bremerton and Jan Shadle and her husband, Bill, of Roseville, Calif.; a brother, Elmer Friesen of Peterborough, Ontario, Canada; a sister, Tena Friesen of Abbotsford, British Columbia; five grandchildren, Dawn, Matthew, Corey, Christie and Melissa; and three great-grandchildren, Justine, Michael and Gabrielle. Her son and daughter, Ricky Lee Simpson and Dawn Simpson, preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sept. 21 at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee of Bremerton.
Dorothy Jorgensen
F. Dorothy Jorgensen, 83, of Indianola died Sept. 7, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Montclair, N.J., to Anders Hjalmer and Elisabeth (Johanson) Johnson. She graduated from high school in Verona, N.J., later completing one year of nursing school in Montclair.
She married
John Jorgensen on Oct. 22, 1938, in Verona. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jorgensen was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking (with lots of gravy), making candles and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include a son, Donald Jorgensen and his wife, Melody, of Fresno, Calif.; two daughters, Justine Jacobsen and her husband, John, of Indianola and Nancy Niemi and her husband, Duane, of Clovis, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Two sisters also preceded her in death.
A family memorial service will be held in Norway next spring. Mr. and Mrs. Jorgensen will be inurned together. Cremation is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.

Bruce Shanklin
H. Bruce Shanklin, 90, of Kingston died Sept. 11, 2002, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
He was born Oct. 17, 1911, in Humble, Texas, to Marshall J. and Mattie Alice (Dale) Shanklin.
He married
Thyra Huggins in Lake Charles, La., on Jan. 9, 1932. She preceded him in death after 66 years of marriage.
Mr. Shanklin retired from the Colombian Petroleum Company in Bogota, Colombia, in 1974. He had served as the company's vice president of operations.
After his retirement, he resided in Victoria, Texas. In the summer of 1998, he moved with his daughter to Kingston.
Mr. Shanklin enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing dominoes.
Survivors include a daughter, Marsha J. Shanklin of Kingston; a brother, Marshall J. Shanklin Jr. of Houston; a grandson, Lance Bruce Shanklin, and a daughter-in-law, Judi Shanklin, both of Georgetown, Texas. His son, H. Dale Shanklin, preceded him in death.
A private memorial service will be held in Texas at the family cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee of Bremerton.
Evelyn Wright
Evelyn Virginia Wright, 87, of Bremerton died Sept. 8, 2002, at Later Years Adult Family Home in Bremerton.
She was born June 30, 1915, in Taft, Calif., to Tom and Irene (Wheeler) Anderson.
She married
Wilbur "Buck" Wright on July 26, 1957. He preceded her in death in 1999.
Mrs. Wright was a member of Ladies of Elks and the Bremerton Business and Professional Women's Club.
Survivors include a son, Jim Trubody of Castro Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Rae Irene Robertson of Seattle and Lana Jayne Tapscott of Bremerton; a sister, Mary Jayne McDowell of Castro Valley; five grandchildren, Brian, Kelly and Erin Aitchison and Nicole and Ben Tapscott; and one great-granddaughter, Elsa Aitchison.
At her request, there will be no services. A family gathering is being planned.
Penny O'Brien
Alvaretta H. "Penny" O'Brien, 81, of Port Orchard died Sept. 7, 2002, at Orchard Pointe Memory Care Community in Port Orchard.
She was born March 26, 1921, in Missoula, Mont., to Walter and Edna (Heatherington) Adams.
She had worked as an executive secretary with Sears and Roebuck in Seattle for 26 years, retiring in 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Terry O'Brien of Seattle and Patrick O'Brien of Port Orchard; a daughter, Kathleen Toensjost of Maple Valley; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services are private.
