Frances Betty Drake
Frances Betty Drake, 72, of Poulsbo died Sept. 4, 2002, in Bremerton following a severe stroke.
She was born April 2, 1930, in San Francisco to Joeseph and Rose Mary (Havelka) Vokrac. She graduated from San Mateo High School in San Mateo, Calif., in 1948, from the University of California-Berkley in 1952, and from the University of Washington-Seattle in 1954.
She loved flowers and God. She was a member of Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include her former husband, Harbert B. Drake of Walla Walla; a son, Bryan Beach Drake of Poulsbo; a daughter, Victoria Frances Drake of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; and two grandchildren, Leilani and Joshua.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Christ Memorial Church, at Eighth and Hostmark in Poulsbo.

Ramona Hedstrom
Ramona H. Hedstrom, 79, of Bremerton, formerly of Belfair, died Sept. 7, 2002, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born June 23, 1923, in Alice, N.D., to Joseph and Mary (Rominski) Hartl.
She was educated in Alice.
She married
Clarence Hedstrom on June 13, 1944, in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Hedstrom had worked as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney in Bremerton. She was retired.
She enjoyed crochet, bowling and being a grandmother. She was a member of the Sons of Norway and Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair.
Survivors include a son, Perry Hedstrom and his wife, Mercia, of Bremerton; a daughter, Paulette Cady and her husband, Don, of Belfair; two sisters, JoAnn Hansen of Fargo, N.D., and Jackie McManus of Lake Park, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Rodney Hartl, and a sister, Eleanor Szczepanski.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church with inurnment at Twin Firs cemetery, also in Belfair.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Bob Williams
Robert D. "Bob" Williams, 88, of Bremerton died Aug. 29, 2002, at Harrison Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 23, 1914, to Clarence R. and Mabel Williams. He came to Bremerton in 1917.
Mr. Williams graduated from Bremerton High School in 1935. He played basketball and football.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the Planning Department as an electrical equipment specialist and also part time in nuclear power. He retired in 1970 after 30 years of service.
He married
the former Janet McFadden in 1938. They were married
for 64 years.
For 20 years after retiring, Mr. Williams and his wife went on cruises and were snowbirds in Palm Desert, Calif.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Club 1181 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He enjoyed cars, golf, collecting magazines and watching videotapes.
Survivors include his wife; six nephews, Gary Girard and his wife, Janna, of Vancouver, Wash., Chuck Girard and his wife, Peggy, of Arizona, Randy Williams and his wife, Janet, of Prosser, Steve Williams and his wife, Connie, of Yakima, Keith McFadden and his wife, Robin, of Arizona and Bruce McFadden and his wife, Jean, of Pullman; and three nieces, Cindy Laws and Vicky Halverson, both of Selah, and Mary Jo Castleberry and her husband, Ronald, of Marysville. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert M. Williams.
At Mr. Williams' request, there will be no services.

Fred Johnson
Fred Johnson, 97, of Chico died Sept. 4, 2002, at Belmont Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 28, 1905, in Silverdale to Albert and Christina (Westin) Johnson. He graduated from Bremerton Union High School in 1923.
On Oct. 4, 1929, he married
Verneta Ruef in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1997 after 68 years of marriage.
Mr. Johnson worked for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 37 years as a planner-estimator and for the electrical shop. He retired in 1962.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of Sylvan Way Baptist Church.
His survivors include two sons, Kenneth Johnson of Seattle and Allen Johnson of Port Orchard; a daughter, Marilyn Thomas of Bothell; a brother, James Johnson of Silverdale; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-granchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sylvan Way Baptist Church. Burial will take place at Mountain View cemetery in Silverdale.

Robert Haight
Robert Alan Haight, 51, of Poulsbo died Aug. 31, 2002, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
He was born Oct. 10, 1950, in Seattle to Edward C. and Golden M. (Noste) Haight. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1969.
Mr. Haight served in the Army Reserve from 1970 to 1976. He was an estimator with Haight Roofing for 32 years.
He married
Lynda L. (Beaton) Haight on Dec. 15, 1982, in Reno, Nev.
He coached youth baseball in Kitsap County and in Redmond, was active in the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited, and was an avid hunter and golfer.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, Matthew J.R. McCauley of Poulsbo; and three brothers, Leigh A. Haight of Seattle, Larry C. Haight of Snohomish and William Haight of Arizona.
His parents preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 14 at Cherry Grove Memorial Park, 22272 Foss Road in Poulsbo. Inurnment also will be there. Arrangements are under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove, Poulsbo.
Charles Bennett
Charles H. Bennett, 88, of Belfair died Sept. 3, 2002, in Port Orchard.
He was born March 6, 1914, in Seattle to George and Elizabeth (McNulty) Bennett.
He graduated from King Edward High School in Vancouver, British Columbia, and Vancouver Technical School.
He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and worked as a radio operator.
Mr. Bennett married
Margaret Scotland on May 21, 1938, in Vancouver, B.C.
He worked with the British Columbia Provincial Police from 1938 to 1941, and with Pan American World Airways from 1941 to 1977. He rose through the ranks from radio operator to executive vice president of Ariana Afghan Airlines for PanAm, and was hired by Ariana in 1980 as a consultant for three years.
He enjoyed amateur radio, photography, handcrafting ivory jewelry and coordinating sponsorship for Afghan refugees. He also was a 32-degree Mason and a member of the Nile Shriners.
He belonged to St. Nicholas Church in Tahuya.
Mr. Bennett's survivors include his wife, of Belfair; two sons, John Bennett and his wife, Nickie, of Virginia and Stuart Bennett of Mercer Island; five daughters, Grenda Moss of Oklahoma, Maggi Stoner and her husband, Steve, of Georgia, LeeAnne Martinez and her husband, Mel, of Belfair, Carol Zuckerman and her husband, John, of Seattle and Jody Laskowski and her husband, Paul, of Tennessee; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Church in Tahuya. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Michele Willard
Michele Willard, 39, of Silverdale died Aug. 29, 2002, at her home.
She was born Sept. 10, 1962, in Logan, Utah, to David and Connie (Lund) Braegger. She graduated from Cedar City (Utah) High School and from Utah State University in Logan.
She married
Daniel M. Willard on Aug. 15, 1987, in Las Vegas.
She worked for four years as a sales manager at Petsmart in Silverdale after being employed as a day-care administrator in California.
Her interests included reading, animals and children. She enjoyed walking, collecting sea shells and taking family pictures.
Mrs. Willard is survived by her husband; both parents; three brothers, Darren and Jeremy Braegger, both of Cedar City, Utah, and Mark Braegger of St. George, Utah; a sister, Denise Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M.; and a special aunt, Faith Frost of Silverdale.
A private memorial service for family and friends is planned. Donations may be made to Animal Rescue Families, c/o Petsmart, 9588 Ridgetop Blvd., Silverdale 98383.

Roger Karrigan
Former Bremerton resident Roger Patrick Karrigan, 72, of Bellevue died of cancer Aug. 31, 2002, in Bellevue.
He was born April 3, 1930, in Milan, Minn., to Estella (Rosvold) and Byron Karrigan.
He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1948, attended Olympic College and transferred to the University of Washington, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in education. Mr. Karrigan also attended Colorado State University in Greely for his doctorate in education.
Dr. Karrigan served in the Army from 1951 to 1954. He worked as a teacher for the Bellevue School District for 20 years.
He enjoyed fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his brother, Elwood Karrigan of Scappoose, Ore., and a sister, Kathleen Carver of Issaquah.
A private graveside service will be at Green Funeral Home, 1215 145th Place SE in Bellevue.

Dell Goddard
Delbert "Dell" I. Goddard, 89, of Kingston died Aug. 25, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Nov. 26, 1912, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Odessa (Shade) and Alfred "Lee" Goddard.
Mr. Goddard married
Hellane Hunton on July 21, 1939, in Seattle.
He worked for Boeing from 1941 to 1946 and from 1954 to 1962. From 1941 to 1946, he worked in prototype engine development and final assembly on the first Boeing B-29. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1961 and retired on disability in 1962.
In 1963, he moved to the Kingston area.
He was a member of Kingston Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard Goddard of Valley, Wash., and Danel Goddard of Hayden, Idaho; a brother, Glen Goddard of Naselle, Wash.; and a sister, June Belknap of Valley.
Mr. Goddard was preceded in death by his oldest son, Gary Lane Goddard, who was killed in an auto accident in 1962 while serving in the Navy, and a younger brother, Claire Goddard.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Kingston Christian Church.
Inurnment may be at Washington Memorial Park in Seattle with his son.
Shorty Smith
Virginia M. "Shorty" Smith, 76, of Port Orchard died Sept. 1, 2002, at her home.
She was born May 28, 1926, in Nampa, Idaho, to Fremont and Sarah Prince Stitzel. She attended school in Nampa in her early years and moved to Bremerton during World
War II, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1944.
She later attended college in Idaho, where she was a member of the women's field hockey team, pep band and orchestra.
She married
Dale D. Smith on Dec. 23, 1950, in Caldwell, Idaho, and returned to Bremerton in 1957.
Mrs. Smith was involved in athletics most of her life. During the war years, she played fast pitch softball with the Puget Sound Navy Yard teamand with Idaho State Champions. She was a national and regional All-Star.
She was a longstanding member of the Gold Mountain Ladies Golf Club. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and teaching her grandchildren to shoot pool.
She also enjoyed bingo, playing lively music on her old organ, reading, doing puzzles and playing cards. She was known for her sense of humor and selfless ways.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, William R. Smith and his wife, Charlotte, of Port Orchard and Patrick D. Smith of Key Center; two sisters, Marjory Galbraith and her husband, James, of Bremerton and Donna Robinson and her husband, Charles, of Gaston, Ore.; four grandchildren, Billy Smith of Bremerton, Sarah Hansen Smith of Port Orchard, David Smith of Tacoma and Stacy Smith of Republic; and seven great-grandchildren.
