Lucille Chawla
Lucille Chawla, 83, a resident of Port Townsend for the past 20 years, died Oct. 13, 2002, of complications resulting from a fall.
She was born in Minneapolis and raised in Chicago. At the age of 65, she moved to Port Townsend after earning a bachelor's degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham.
She founded a school in India, studied tai chi in Taiwan, lived for a long time in the Philippines and visited Vietnam during the war.
While living in Port Townsend, Ms. Chawla led an amateur writers group for many years and served as a docent at the Jefferson County Museum. She also attended the Unitarian church and Quaker meetings there.
Her survivors include a son, Michael Malloy and his wife, Ruth, of Toronto; and a daughter, Shawn Norhrup Gatz and her husband, Robert, of Poulsbo.
A memorial service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Friday in the common room of the Admiralty Apartments at Taylor and Water streets in Port Townsend.
Jessica Dickinson
Jessica Margaret Dickinson, 86, of Allyn died Oct. 14, 2002, at Alterra Bridge Care of Silverdale.
She was born March 22, 1916, in Seattle to Charles and Josephine (Allen) Weymouth. She graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle in 1934.
She married
Glen C. Dickinson in 1942. He died in 1996.
Mrs. Dickinson was a longtime resident of the Queen Anne area. She had worked as a bookkeeper for many years.
Survivors include two sons, David of Grapeview and Warren and his wife, Mary Jo, of Renton; and a brother, Warren Weymouth of New Orleans.
At the family's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo. Inurnment will be at Laurel Grove cemetery in Port Townsend.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Catherine Grammer
Catherine Evelyn Grammer, 93, of Bremerton died Oct. 14, 2002, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 8, 1909, in Boston to Thomas F. and Maud (Britton) McDonough. She graduated from high school in the Boston area.
She married
Frederick E. Grammer Sr. on Aug. 22, 1928, in Everett, Mass. He died in 1976.
Mrs. Grammer had been a resident of Kitsap County for the past 64 years. She was a homemaker.
She was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Her survivors include a sister, Marion O'Neal of Poulsbo; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, Frederick E. Grammer II, preceded her in death in 1962.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial there at 11 a.m. Interment
will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Eva Garrison
Eva H. Garrison, 62, of Bremerton died Oct. 14, 2002, at Harrison Hospital of cancer.
She was born Sept. 23, 1940, in Dettingen, Germany, to Josef and Barbara Heim.
She married
Floyd E. Garrison on Sept. 15, 1962, in Aschaffenburg, Germany.
Mrs. Garrison went on to graduate from Vallejo Adult School in Vallejo, Calif., Solano Community College in Vallejo and from Olympic College in 1982. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in education in 1983 from Central Washington University and a master's degree in education from City University in 1994.
She had worked as a teacher and career counselor in the Central Kitsap School District for 23 years, retiring in 2001.
She was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton, serving as a Eucharistic minister. Her favorite pastimes were travel and walking.
Her survivors include her husband; two daughters, Cindy Kleinfelter of Bremerton and Michele Garrison of La Pine, Ore.; a brother, Franz Heim of Dettingen, Germany; and two grandchildren, Alex and Ben.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church followed by an 11 a.m. funeral Mass. A reception follows the Mass, also at the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Richard Quaintance
Richard William Quaintance, 51, of Retsil died of cancer Oct. 14, 2002, at the Washington Veterans Home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1951, in Portland, Ore., to Bruce F. and Gloria M. Quaintance. He graduated from Blanchett High School in Seattle in 1969.
Mr. Quaintance served in the Army from 1975 to 1977. He went on to become a businessman.
He was an artist and sports enthusiast. He was a member of the Roman Catholic church.
His survivors include two brothers, Bruce M. Quaintance of Port Orchard and Paul T. Quaintance of Kirkland.
Interment will be in the cemetery at the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil.
Irene Rodgers
Irene Mae Rodgers, 69, of Poulsbo died Oct. 10, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born March 21, 1933, in Sibley, Minn., to William Edward and Bertha Louise (Zumbrunnen) Dano.
She married
Robert Owen Rodgers on April 1, 1955, in Port Orchard.
She graduated from high school in Kitsap County.
Mrs. Rodgers worked as secretary of the family business, Rodgers Landscaping, in Poulsbo and before that was a waitress for three years at Sportsman Restaurant in Bremerton. She was retired.
She enjoyed bowling, debating and watching professional tennis. She had a talent for cooking and baking. She taught preschoolers for 12 years at Sylvan Way Baptist Church and was a member of Keyport Bible Church since 1964.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Robert William Rodgers and his wife, Katherine, of Bonney Lake, Robin William Rodgers of Yakima, Randy William Rodgers and his wife, Barbara, and Rayce William Rodgers and his wife, Rachel, of Bremerton; a daughter, Reana Mae Rodgers of Bremerton; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas, Jeremiah, Elizabeth, Reese, Sarah, Robbie, Andrew, Joshua, Isaiah, Michaela and Jared Rodgers; and one great-grandchild, Faith Rodgers.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Edward Dano.
A celebration of Mrs. Rodgers' life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Keyport Bible Church, 15270 Washington Ave., Keyport. A private family interment was at Mountain View cemetery in Silverdale. Arrangements are with The Stone Chapel, Poulsbo Mortuary.

Guida Bachtel
Guida Bachtel, 91, of Silverdale died Oct. 14, 2002, in Silverdale.
She was born July 31, 1911, in San Tamero, Italy, to David and Christina (Russo) Rossetti.
She married
Elmo E. Bachtel on May 5, 1946, in Caserta, Italy. He died in 1979.
Ms. Bachtel was a homemaker.
She enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was Catholic.
Survivors include a son, David Bachtel of Poulsbo; a daughter, Anna Neal-McIntosh of Silverdale; a sister, Linda Rossi of Santa Maria, Italy; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews in the United States and Italy.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Interment
is at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
James Benedict
James Harvey Benedict, 61, of Port Orchard died at home of cancer Oct. 12, 2002.
He was born Oct. 10, 1941, in Ketchikan, Alaska, to James Harvey Benedict and Mary Christianna (Remmen) Benedict.
He was a 1960 graduate of Olympia High School. He served in the Navy from 1960 to 1964, achieving the rank of petty officer second class.
He married
Patricia Jeanne Scott on Oct. 18, 1971, in Olympia.
Mr. Benedict worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 12 years, until 1993, and drove a taxi in Port Orchard for six years.
He enjoyed martial arts and politics.
Survivors include his wife; his mother, Mary Benedict of Olympia; a son, Samuel G. Benedict of Seattle; a daughter, Rachel L. Benedict of Belfair; a brother, Patrick Benedict of Tumwater; and two sisters, Jeanette Nielsen and Lisa Benedict, both of Olympia.
He was preceded in death by his father.
A memorial service will be from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mariners Glen Apartments, 3418 Navigation Lane in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society. Nancy Kvande
A memorial service for Nancy Lee Kvande will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, 2483 Mitchell Road in Port Orchard.
Kvande, 55, died Aug. 7, 2002, in a motorcycle accident in Montana. Her husband, Jack Lee McCracken, was hospitalized.
Mr. McCracken was released from the hospital and returned to Washington. He wants to share with friends and family a time of remembrance for his wife.

Tyler Fraioli
Tyler James Fraioli, son of Jason Fraioli and Army Marks of Silverdale, was stillborn Oct. 1, 2002, at Harrison Hospital-Silverdale.
He is survived by his parents; a brother, Justin Paul Fraioli of Silverdale; his maternal grandparents, Margaret and Bruce Marks of Kent; and his paternal grandparents, Joe and Ann Fraioli of Hillsboro, Ore.
A private family service is planned at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Mary Buckley
Mary T. Buckley, 84, of Port Orchard died Oct. 10, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard after a stroke.
She was born June 3, 1918, in Snohomish to Harley and Hanna (Streissguth) Trowbridge. She was a 1936 graduate of Snohomish High School and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1940 from Washington State University in Pullman, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
She married
Niel E. Buckley. He died in 1966.
Mrs. Buckley went on to earn a master's degree in social work from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1970. She was employed as a social worker with Mt. St. Vincent's in Seattle from 1970 until 1989 and with Hospice of Kitsap County from 1990 until her retirement in 2000.
When she began working for Mt. St. Vincent's, she was a pioneer in geriatric social work. Her book, "The Aged Are People, Too, " was published in 1978.
She was an active member of St. Bede's Episcopal Church in Port Orchard. The Episcopal Diocese of Olympia honored her with the Bishop's Cross in 1998.
Mrs. Buckley was an avid reader. She enjoyed fiction, philosophy and religion.
Her survivors include a son, Kim T. Buckley of West Linn, Ore.; and a granddaughter, Alexandra Boule-Buckley. A sister, Martha Windnagle, also preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Bede's Episcopal Church, 1576 SE Lider Road in Port Orchard.
