Roz Downey
Rosamond Wells "Roz" Downey, 86, of Bainbridge Island died Oct. 9, 2002, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle from complications of a stroke she suffered three years ago.
She was born Rosamond W. Thorne on Feb. 10, 1916, in Kremlin, Mont., to Fred and Isis Thorne. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma and attended the University of Washington.
She married
Albert M. Downey. He preceded her in death after 42 years of marriage.
The Downeys had been residents of Bainbridge Island since 1958. Mrs. Downey had lived at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island for the past three years.
She worked as an aide with the special education program in North Kitsap School District. She was an active member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served as a docent for the Bloedel Reserve, both on Bainbridge Island.
Her survivors include two sons, Richard Downey and his wife, Joan, of Woodinville, and Steve Downey of Seattle; two grandsons, Daniel and Douglas; and a great-granddaughter, Haley. Two brothers, Fay and Dalton Thorne, also preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Bethany Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Downey wanted donations sent to either Bethany Lutheran Church, 7968 Finch Road NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 or to Hope Heart Institute, 1710 E Jefferson, Seattle, WA 98122.
Doris Marx
Doris Leona Marx, 89, of Bremerton died Oct. 11, 2002, at Belmont Terrace Convalescent Center in Bremerton.
She was born Oct. 23, 1912, in Pueblo, Colo., to Franklin Pierce Walsh and Sadie (Tate) Walsh.
She married
James Lynton Marx in San Francisco. He died in 1989.
Mrs. Marx had worked as an accountant for 36 years with the war department at the Alameda Air Station in Alameda, Calif., retiring in 1978.
Her survivors include two daughters, Valerie Barbeau of Aloha, Ore., and Kira Ivory of Santa Rosa, Calif.; three grandchildren, Heather, Josh and Rose; and three great-grandchildren, Austin, Serenity and Ezra.
A private memorial service will be held.
Naomi Webster
Naomi June Webster, 79, of Port Orchard died Oct. 6, 2002, at her home.
She was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Springfield, Ohio. She graduated from high school in Ohio.
She married
Merle O. Webster. He died in 1964.
Mrs. Webster had worked as a secretary.
Her survivors include three daughters, June Schmale of Ohio, Elizabeth A. Haynes and Trisha Joy, both of Washington, and Barbara Webster of Montana; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
DuWayne Cowgill
DuWayne L. Cowgill, 80, of Olalla died Oct. 10, 2002, in Port Orchard.
He was born Dec. 20, 1921, in Wenatchee to Clare and Ellen (McManimum) Cowgill.
He married
Kathryn E. Fastje in August 1944 in Havre, Mont. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Cowgill served in the Marine Corps from 1940 to 1943. He was a chief cook.
He went on to work for 30 years in sheet metal layout at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1968.
His survivors include two sons, Clinton Cowgill of Kenai, Alaska, and Alan Cowgill of Tacoma; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fraola cemetery in Olalla. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Eleanor Atteridge
Former Kitsap County resident Eleanor Atteridge, 86, of Olympia died Oct. 12, 2002, in Olympia.
She was born July 4, 1916, in Stanley, Wis., to Theodore and Ann Heiting. She moved to Washington in 1937.
She married
Norton Harrington Atteridge on June 28, 1937, in Seattle. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Atteridge was a homemaker. She had worked for Continental Can during World War II.
From 1955 to 1970, she lived in Poulsbo. She lived in Bremerton from 1970 until 2000.
Mrs. Atteridge enjoyed needlepoint, cross stitch and other crafts. She and her husband had wintered in Arizona for 25 years.
Her survivors include a daughter, Peggy Russell of Nalcrest, Fla.; a son, Dr. Sean Atteridge of Olympia; and grandchildren, Christopher Atteridge of Melbourne, Australia, and a granddaughter, Braona Atteridge of Boulder, Colo.
No services are planned. The family requests that friends and family share a toast in remembrance of Eleanor.
Floyd McIntosh
Floyd Kenneth McIntosh, 73, of Bremerton, died Oct. 9, 2002, at his home.
He was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Risco, Mo., to Wesley Erven and Madge (Black) McIntosh.
He graduated from high school in Lilbourn, Mo., in 1947.
On Oct. 21, 1950, he married
Alice Marie Hanna.
Mr. McIntosh joined the Navy in April 1948 and retired in 1969 as a master chief.
He later went to work for the King County Assessor's Office.
He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
In addition to his wife, survivors include son Stanley Kenneth McIntosh; daughters Debra McIntosh of Bremerton and Laura Marie McIntosh of El Cerrito, Calif.; brothers Erven and Tony of Missouri; sisters Mary Lee, Stella Buck and Martha Miller of Missouri; and grandaughters Midori, Akemi and Elisa McIntosh.
He was preceded in death by his brother Oscar Ray.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn with interment to follow.
Fairlyn Magruder
Fairlyn F. Magruder, 81, of Port Orchard died Oct. 8, 2002, in Retsil.
She was born March 9, 1921, in Pend Oreille, Idaho, to Louis and Esther (Shaner) Foster.
She married
Samual Magruder. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Magruder served in the Army with the Women's Air Corps from 1950 to 1954, achieving the rank of sergeant. She was awarded the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
She also was a beautician.
Mrs. Magruder was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include a stepson, John Main of Anchorage, Alaska, and two step-grandchildren, Matt and Charlot Main, both of Anchorage.
A Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the chapel at the Washington Veterans Home in Retsil. Interment
will be at the Retsil cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Doris Covey
Former Poulsbo resident Doris Helen Covey, 67, of Lincoln died Oct. 3, 2002, in Davenport of cancer.
She was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Liberty, Texas, to James and Minnie (Flowers) Nelson.
She graduated from West Seattle High School and Seattle Pacific College.
She married
Gerald Covey on June 25, 1960, in Seattle.
Mrs. Covey was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts and making afghans.
She was a member of Radio Enthusiasts of Puget Sound and the Church of the Nazarene in Poulsbo.
Survivors include her husband; her mother, now of Creston; three sons, Jeffrey Covey of Kent, James Covey of Govan and Jack Covey of Medford, Ore.; a daughter, Rose Covey of Waikoloa, Hawaii; a brother, James Nelson of Wilbur; a sister, Ruth Bryant of Creston; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Oct. 19 at Creston Christian Church.
A private graveside service will be at the Almira cemetery in Almira. Arrangements are under the direction of Strate Funeral Home in Wilbur.
Memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Cancer Society.
Sylvia Buhr
Former Bremerton resident Sylvia (Medby) Pfeiffer Buhr, 88, of Litchfield, Conn., died Oct. 1, 2002, in Litchfield of Parkinson's disease.
She was born Jan. 27, 1914, in Oslo, Norway, to Norman and Amalie (Dahl) Medby. She graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle.
She married
Henry F. Pfeiffer on Aug. 27, 1939, in Seattle. He died in 1987.
She married
Ernest Buhr on Nov. 4, 1990, in Bremerton. He died in 2001.
Survivors include two sons, Norman H. Pfeiffer of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Paul F. Pfeiffer of New York City; a sister, Rae McSpadden of Malibu, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marylin Pfeiffer.
The funeral service and burial in Evergreen Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle will be private.
Lotus Boggs
Lotus "Lou" Boggs, 77, of Silverdale died Oct. 9, 2002, in Silverdale.
She was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Oklahoma City to Jesse and Hallie (Trent) Roark. She graduated from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in 1960.
She had worked at a hearing aid center in California. She retired in 1997. She also was a model and dress designer. She enjoyed beadwork, fishing and travel, having made a trip to China in 2000.
Survivors include a son, David Libhart of Maui, Hawaii; a daughter, Danelle Acord of San Diego; a brother, Lester Roark and his wife, Pat, of Bremerton; a sister, Doris Raye Griffith of Silverdale; four grandchildren, Lisa, Brandon, Matthew and Erin; and six great-grandchildren, Katie, Paul, Ashley, Joshua, Jonathan and Zacchai.
She was preceded in death by a son, Paul, and a sister, Dorothy Queen.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home of her niece, Karen Arper, in Bremerton.
Thomas Mallard
Former Bremerton resident Thomas Allen Mallard, 62, of Fresno, Calif., died of leukemia Sept. 1, 2002, in Fresno.
He was born April 12, 1940.
Mr. Mallard served in the Navy for 23 years, retiring as a senior chief. He later worked on the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor for 14 years, retiring this year.
He was a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Mallard; a son, Steve Hodges of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Ashley Miller of Fayetteville, Ark., and Nonni Jones of Farmington, Ark.; and six grandchildren.
Prayers of the community will be offered for Thomas Allen Mallard during the 11:30 a.m. Sunday Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, Inc., 2030 Westlake Ave., Seattle, WA 98121.
