Roger Carlson
Roger Clifford Carlson, 70, of Port Orchard died Oct. 5, 2002, in Tacoma
He was born May 18, 1932, in Aitkin, Minn., to Clifford and Amelia (Lund) Carlson.
Mr. Carlson worked as an equipment operator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1975.
He enjoyed driving and RVing. He was a member of the Sounder Sam Chapter of the Good Sam Club and the Wake Tickeh Creek Camp Club.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis (Peterson) Carlson; two sons, Robert L. Carlson and his wife, Belinda, of Poulsbo and Jeff Carlson of Spokane; two daughters, Michelle Sipila and Madona Carlson, both of Bremerton; two sisters, Norma Case and her husband, Mel, of Bremerton and Edith Light of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
At the family's request, no services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Richard Houk
Richard W. Houk, 50, of Port Orchard died of muscular dystrophy on Oct. 4, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born July 27, 1952, in San Diego to Warren and Margaret (Brown) Houk. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1970.
Mr. Houk served as a seaman in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He went on to work for K2 Ski Corporation on Vashon Island, making snow skis for 20 years until his retirement in 1990.
He enjoyed bowling, bingo and Keno.
Survivors include his father and stepmother, Warren and Doris Houk of Port Orchard; two brothers, David Houk of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Warren Houk Jr. of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his mother.
A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. today at the Washington Veterans Home cemetery in Retsil. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Ernie Howerton
Ernie F. Howerton, 77, of Tracyton died of respiratory failure Oct. 6, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born April 18, 1925, in Manette to Frederick and Lora (Knuppenberg) Howerton. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1942.
Mr. Howerton served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, achieving the rank of private first class. He was awarded numerous medals, including the World War II Victory Medal.
He went on to work as head groundskeeper with the Bremerton School District for more than 20 years. He retired in 1980.
He married
Dorothy Paschal on Oct. 10, 1981, in Tracyton.
Mr. Howerton played the accordion, teaching accordion, organ and keyboard lessons. He performed in dance bands for many years and entertained in local nursing homes along with his wife, who played drums.
He was a member of American Legion Post 68 in Bremerton.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, John Hatch and his wife, Barbara, of Redmond; a sister, Ruth Smith of Chanute, Kan.; and a stepgranddaughter, Tiffany Hatch of West Seattle. He was preceded in death by sisters Geneva and Anita, and by brothers Jesse, Ted, Fred and Eugene.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton. Memorial donations may be made to the Kitsap Humane Society, 9167 Dickey Road NW, Silverdale, WA 98383.
Margaret (Kean) Silverthorn
Former Bremerton resident Margaret A. (Kean) Silverthorn, 80, of Cherry Hill, N.J., died Oct. 5, 2002, in Cherry Hill.
She was born May 12, 1922, in Bremerton to L. "Hum" and Sadie Kean. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1940.
She married
Charles P. Silverthorn in February 1949 in Seattle. He died in 1975.
Mrs. Silverthorn worked in the pipe shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard just after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1946, she worked at Bremer's Department Store and later with Pacific Telephone from 1946 to 1949.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey and Paul Silverthorn, both of Cherry Hill; a daughter, M. Theresa Maines and her husband, Robert; a sister, her "Big Sis" Ruth Kean Yates of Bremerton; and five grandchildren. A brother, Albert C. Kean, also preceded her in death in 1949.
Her memorial service is private.
Lorna May Hammond
Lorna May Hammond, 87, of Poulsbo died Oct. 5, 2002, at Martha and Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo from complications of a stroke.
She was born Oct. 12, 1914, in Barn Stable, North Devon, England, to Thomas George and Annie Louise (Moule) Porter. She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane in 1935 and attended Washington State College in Pullman.
She married
Herbert Edwin Hammond on June 6, 1942, in Spokane.
Mrs. Hammond was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She enjoyed sewing and salmon fishing.
She was affiliated with the Episcopal faith.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Thomas J. Hammond of Port Orchard; and one granddaughter, Wendy Hammond. She was preceded in death by sisters Phyllis Mitchell and Irene Moe.
A private inurnment will be held at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton.

Redentor Encarnacion
Redentor Encarnacion, 46, of Bremerton died Oct. 3, 2002, in Bremerton.
He was born Sept. 29, 1956, in Cavite, Philippines, to Tommie and Naty Encarnacion. He graduated from high school in Manila, Philippines.
Mr. Encarnacion served in the United States Navy. He went on to work in property management and as a handyman.
He was a member of the Catholic Church. He enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.
Survivors include a son, Tony Ray Encarnacion of California; two brothers, Roel and Ramir Encarnacion, both of Washington; and a sister, Amy Encarnacion of Texas.
A funeral service was held Monday at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton.
Colorado Jim Dones
James R. "Colorado Jim" Dones, 73, of Port Orchard and Yuma, Ariz., died Oct. 5, 2002, in Port Orchard after a long battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Longmont, Colo., to Henry and Susan Dones. He graduated from Olatha High School in Olatha, Colo., in 1946.
Mr. Dones served in the Navy from 1946 until his retirement as a chief petty officer in 1966. He went on to work as a planner and estimator in the public works department at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 17 years, retiring in 1984.
He married
Dorthea M. Voellger on March 11, 1982, in Olalla.
Mr. Dones raised, trained, judged and showed horses. He was also an avid fisherman.
In later years, he was a member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS). He was outstanding in the elder statesman category, winning many first-place awards and a Western States Championship.
Mr. Dones was active in the Yuma County Search and Rescue. He was named member of the year in 1997.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Desiree Dones of Gig Harbor and Susan Dones of Puyallup; a stepson, Brad Nielens of Seattle; two stepdaughters, Shelley George of Vashon and Paula Nielens of Yuma; and five grandchildren, James Norton, Ryan Morton, Dustin and Cameron Rosas, and Lindsey Pierre. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Dones.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. Inurnment will be in Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Maxine Hester
Maxine Hester, 81, of Bremerton, died Oct. 3, 2002, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma.
She was born Dec. 22, 1920, in Renton to Jesse and Hazel (Rowe) McCowin.
She was raised and educated in Renton, where she graduated from Renton High School in 1939.
On Feb. 26, 1955, she married
Donald Hester in Belfair.
Mrs. Hester was an education aide for the Bremerton School District and a homemaker.
She was a member of the Sons of Norway, Lady Elks, Eagles Auxiliary and Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bremerton. She volunteered at the Harrison Hospital gift shop and was treasurer for the National Cory Family Society. She enjoyed traveling with RV clubs, reading, dancing and entertaining.
Survivors include her husband of Bremerton, daughters Marlene (Sommerfield) Noll of Gig Harbor and Shirley Sommerfield of Bremerton; son Mark Hester of Renton; sister Sharon (Olson) Cook of Bremerton; grandchildren Tino and Jennifer DeLaRosa of Gig Harbor, Adam and Alex Hester of Renton; and great grandchild Griffin DeLaRosa of Gig Harbor.
She was preceded in death by a sister, LorAine Harden.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Bremerton. Interment
will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

David Donald MacNamara
David Donald MacNamara, 59, of Bainbridge Island died Oct. 2, 2002.
A gathering of friends will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at 4329 N.E. Rhodes End on Bainbridge Island.
Russ Ely
Russell E. "Russ" Ely, 69, of Port Orchard died Sept. 25, 2002, of mesothelioma cancer at his home.
He was born Jan. 15, 1933, in Mount Holly, N.J., to Edmund and Edna (Haines) Ely. He graduated from Bremerton High School in 1951 and attended college in Seattle for two years.
Mr. Ely served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. He went on to work as a manufacturing and operations manager with TRW and Ampex Corp., both in California, for 30 years, retiring in 1990.
He married
Mary Ann Rivas in Las Vegas.
Mr. and Mrs. Ely traveled to Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, France, Majorca, Sweden and Tahiti. Bora Bora was their favorite destination.
Sailing was one of Mr. Ely's favorite pastimes. He owned a 27-foot sailboat and was a member of the West Sound Corinthian Yacht Club of Port Orchard.
He was an avid reader. He also enjoyed playing flamenco guitars and getting together with friends.
Survivors include his wife; a brother, Carlton Mike Ely of Delran, N.J.; two sisters, Doris Brandolini of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Eleanor James of Delanco, N.J.; seven nephews and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Ely.
There will be no services. Mr. Ely wanted to be cremated and to have his ashes scattered over Puget Sound.

Sandra Loudy
Former Port Orchard resident Sandra Lou Loudy, 60, of Clark Fork, Idaho, died Sept. 24, 2002, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.
She was born Nov. 30, 1941, in Huntington, W.Va., to Harold and Mary Loudy. She was raised and educated in Port Orchard, graduating from South Kitsap High School.
She married
Joseph Goss on Feb. 12, 1961. They were later divorced.
She married
James Doll in 1977 and, in 1980, they moved to Clark Fork where Mrs. Doll worked as a caregiver in that area for several years. The couple was later divorced.
She enjoyed spending time with her friends. Other interests were reading, gardening and canning.
Survivors include two sons, Brian Lincoln Goss of Belfair and Paul Loran Goss of Phoenix; a daughter, Kelli Lynn Fifield of Mead; three sisters, Liz Stockton of Port Orchard, Becky Edson of Seattle and Debbie Little of Federal Way; a brother, Harold Loudy Jr. of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Sept. 30 at Coffelt's Moon Chapel in Sandpoint, Idaho. Burial was at Heron cemetery in Heron, Mont.
