Harry Preston
Harry R. Preston, 71, of Silverdale died Nov. 27, 2002, in Seattle from a long illness.
He was born Dec. 14, 1930, in Madison, Wis., to Harry and Jeanny (Kasiah) Preston. He graduated from high school in San Francisco and in 1980 graduated from college in Long Beach, Calif.
Mr. Preston married
Doris Hoffmann on Oct. 17, 1974, in Metzingen, Germany.
Mr. Preston served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years until 1972 and worked at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard until 1980.
He enjoyed spending time with his two German shepherds.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ricardo Preston and Karl Preston of California; a stepson, Frank-O. Korte of Silverdale; a daughter, Marlene Preston Saraliev of California; a sister, Maria Keaveny of California; and granddaughter Alexandra Preston of California.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel. Inurnment will be private.
A reception after the funeral service will be at 8676 Hide-A-Way Lane NW, Silverdale.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Viola Aune
Viola Rose Aune, 87, of Bremerton died Nov. 25, 2002, of natural causes at Forest Ridge Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 29, 1914, in Terrel, Iowa, to Albert and Mathilda (Ellison) Aune. She graduated from high school in Grand Forks, N.D., in 1932.
She married
Oscar S. Aune on May 7, 1934, in Bagley, Minn. He died in 1988.
Mrs. Aune worked for 15 years as a manager and cook at Booth's Drug Store in downtown Bremerton. She retired in 1962.
She enjoyed animals, knitting, sewing and reading. She was a member of the Catholic church.
Survivors include two sons, Curtis and his wife, Hazel, of Belfair and Gary and his wife, Pat, of Las Vegas; a daughter, Avis Ekness of Grand Forks, N.D.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by children Roger and Yvonne and by two sisters, Florence Clymer and Myrtle Oxley.
There will be a private interment at Forest Lawn cemetery. At the family's request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

MaryEtta Turner
MaryEtta Turner, 16, of Port Orchard died Nov. 25, 2002, in Tupiza, Bolivia, in a bus accident.
She was born Jan. 25, 1986, in Tacoma to James N. Turner and Pennye Nixon-West.
She was a sophomore last year at South Kitsap High School and was in Bolivia as an exchange student. At Montero, Bolivia, she attended Escuela Salesiana Muyurina High School in Montero.
She enjoyed raising and riding horses, Future Farmers of America, soccer, photography, camping, travel, hiking, e-mailing, talking on the telephone and friends.
Survivors include her father, James N. Turner of Wenatchee; her mother, Pennye L. Nixon-West and stepfather Guy A. West of Port Orchard; stepmother Julie Hall; two brothers, Atticus and Will Turner of Port Orchard; a sister, Yamini West of Port Orchard; her grandparents, MaryEtta and Clarence Nixon of Hickman, Tenn., Barbara Turner of Anacortes and Merna West of Puyallup; and her host parents in Bolivia, Jaime and Fatima Paz.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 1150 Mitchell Ave. in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Rill Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an account for Etta Turner at Columbia Bank. Proceeds will be donated to her favorite charity, Heifer Project International, in which people buy livestock to have it sent to a third world community.
Mary Truman
Mary Imogene Truman, 81, of Port Orchard died of cancer Nov. 28, 2002, at her home.
She was born July 20, 1921, at Belt, Mont., to Arthur and Mary (Ashworth) Swett. She graduated from Mount Vernon High School.
She married
Merle W. Truman on July 28, 1950, in Coos Bay, Ore. He died in 1997.
Ms. Truman and her husband operated Truman's T.V. in Port Orchard for many years.
She was a member of VFW Post 2669 Auxiliary in Port Orchard and held many positions, including district president.
Survivors include three daughters, Rita Truman of Port Orchard, Nancy Mazon and her husband, Mike, of Idaho and Penny Taylor and her husband, Dennis, of Idaho; two sons, Danny Lund and his wife, Debra, of Gig Harbor, Dennis Lund and his wife, Laura, of Portland, Ore.; one stepson, David Truman of Oregon; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Donald Lund.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.

Clara McKaughan
Clara Oleta McKaughan, 85, of Poulsbo died Nov. 28, 2002, of heart disease and kidney failure at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born April 1, 1917, in Frederick, Okla., to John S. and Edna I. (Taylor) Brown.
She married
Frank3 McKaughan. He died in 1983.
Ms. McKaughan cooked at several restaurants. The last one was the Sierra View Golf Course restaurant in Visalia, Calif.
She loved to cook, make quilts, crochet and work in her garden. She was a nondenominational Christian.
Survivors include four daughters, Clara Pendleton and her husband, Floyd, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Ann Jones of Corvallis, Ore., Lou Chandler and her husband, Jim, of Davenport, Fla., and Barbara Hepworth and her husband, Ed, of Jerome, Idaho; one brother, Rufus Brown of Bahalia, Miss.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cherry Grove cemetery, 22272 Foss Road NE in Poulsbo. Interment
also will be at the cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of The Stone Chapel of the same address.

Christopher Forder
Christopher M. Forder, 8, of Seabeck died Nov. 24, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 3, 1994, in Portland, Ore., to Robert and Kimberly (Park) Forder.
A resident of Kitsap County for the past four years, he was being homeschooled.
Christopher loved to read and enjoyed going to the beach and being around the water. He also loved to help with his younger siblings.
He is survived by his parents, of Seabeck; four brothers, Micheal, Nicholas, Benjamin and James Forder, all of Seabeck; three sisters, Jennifer, Rebecca and Sarah Forder, all of Seabeck; his maternal grandparents, Dave and Sandy Stackhouse of Yacolt, Wash.; his paternal grandfather, Robert Forder of Minnesota; and a special aunt, Shannon Gager of Vancouver, Wash.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Kingston Christian Church. Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Crematory. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Cactus Bruce
Edward "Cactus" Bruce Jr., 71, of Seabeck died of a heart attack Nov. 19, 2002, in Troutlake.
He was born Feb. 23, 1931, in Niskayuna, N.Y., to Edward and Mabel (Clark) Bruce. He received his GED high school equivalency diploma in Bremerton.
He married
Flo Eads on Dec. 28, 1966, in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Bruce served in the Army from 1951 to 1953, achieving the rank of corporal.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a pump well operator for many years, retiring in 1989.
He enjoyed commercial fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, Jim Brannan of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Beverly Mosbarger of Shelton; three brothers, Nelson and Mike, both of Port Orchard, and Roderick "Buzz" of Springfield, Ore.; three sisters, Margaret Whitzell and June Babb, both of Oregon, and Thelma Laundry of Port Orchard; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas, and a stepson, Andy Eads.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel.
A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel. Interment
will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.
A celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
Leonard Beitel
Leonard C. Beitel, 70, of Port Orchard died Nov. 21, 2002, at his residence.
He was born April 23, 1932, in Saline, Mo., to Daniel and Ruth Hazel (Osborn) Beitel.
He married
Berta E. Schlipf on Jan. 22, 1961, in Vancouver, Wash. She preceded him in death in 2000.
Mr. Beitel served in the Army during the Korean War.
He was an iron worker on the West Coast for 35 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting, playing cards, pool and guitar, car tinkering and fixing watches.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Beitel of California; and two brothers, Marvin L. Beitel of Somerset, Ky., and Earl Beitel of California.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Colburn and Thelma Slinger.
Visitation is scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. Friday at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rull Chapel in Port Orchard.
Stu McCombs
Stewart W. "Stu" McCombs, 72, of Bainbridge Island died of cancer Nov. 24, 2002, on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Oct. 3, 1930, in Minneapolis to Stewart W. and Alice (Douglas) McCombs. He graduated from Arizona's North Phoenix High School in 1948 and Phoenix Junior College in 1950.
He married
Katherine Vockroth on Dec. 21, 1954, in Richmond, Va.
Mr. McCombs served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1955, attaining the rank of first lieutenant. He was awarded a Korean Service Medal.
He worked as an advertising executive for 38 years, retiring in 1954.
He was a member of the Wing Point Golf and Country Club on Bainbridge Island.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Douglas of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Sally Wilburn of Volcano, Hawaii; a sister, Joanne Hayward of Phoenix; and four grandchildren.
Services will be private. Interment
will take place at National cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
