Nellie Tiahrt
Nellie M. Tiahrt, 79, of Kingston died Nov. 12, 2002, in Bremerton of a stroke in Bremerton.
She was born Sept. 26, 1923, in Portland, Ore., to Amos L. and Florence (Cox) Burt. She graduated from Aberdeen High School in Aberdeen, Idaho, in 1941 and from Pocatello Nursing School in Pocatello, Idaho, in 1944.
She married
Kenneth Tiahrt on Dec. 7, 1946, in Las Vegas.
Mrs. Tiahrt worked as a registered nurse for 37 years, retiring in 1978.
She loved camping with her children and grandsons. She also enjoyed reading, sewing, the ocean and walking on the beach.
Mrs. Tiahrt was affiliated with the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Betty Abrott of Kingston and Peggy Ann Beardsley of Victorville, Calif.; one brother, Robert Burt of Pocatello; one sister, Irene Johnston of Nashur, Mont.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Burt.
A memorial service was held Nov. 14 at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Francis J. Sullivan
Lt. Cmdr. Francis J. Sullivan (Retired), 84, of Port Orchard died Nov. 15, 2002, at Ridgemont Terrace in Port Orchard.
He was born July 29, 1918, in Boston to Daniel and Nellie (Hurley) Sullivan. He graduated from Winchester High School in Winchester, Mass., in 1937 and received an associate's degree from Steilacoom Community College in Tacoma in 1974.
He married
Joyce Brenner on Oct. 19, 1951, in Hagerstown, Md.
Mr. Sullivan served in the Navy from 1942 until his retirement as a lieutenant commander in 1972. He had been a line officer and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star.
He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America, Disabled American Veterans and the Knights of Columbus in Waukegan, Ill. He was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed car touring and camping.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, GinaMarie Moy and her husband, Walter, of Vashon Island and Kathryn Sullivan and her husband, Ronald Stephens, of Tucson, Ariz.; four sons, Frank and his wife, JoAnn, of Gig Harbor, Kevin of Olympia, Gregg of Berlin, Germany, and Michael and his wife, Ann, of Austin, Texas; and six grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan, Sean, Kelly, Colleen and Casey Sullivan.
Services are private. Inurnment will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Bill Brewer
Former Bremerton resident William "Bill" Brewer, 75, of Wilkesboro, N.C., died Nov. 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Wilkes County, N.C., on June 5, 1927, to James Nathan and Mary Francis Bauguess Brewer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Schindler Brewer. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Brewer York of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jody Brewer Williams of Wilkesboro, and Sherri Brewer Myers of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Joan Boden and Barbara White, both of Bremerton; one brother-in-law, Donald Schindler of Port Angeles; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro.

Dr. Neil Ness
Dr. Neil C. Ness, 79, of Bremerton died Nov. 13, 2002 at his home from complications of a stroke.
He was born June 30, 1923, in Great Falls, Mont., to Neil and Clare (McGowan) Ness. He graduated from Scobey High School in Scobey, Mont., in 1942, attended the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated from Logan Chiropractic College in St. Louis in 1958.
He married
Waneve Knox on April 24, 1945, in Reno, Nev. She preceded him in death in 1999.
Dr. Ness served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, achieving the rank of radarman first class. He served aboard the destroyer USS Halford.
He was a chiropractor for 40 years, retiring in 1998.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Ness of Port-land, Ore., and Dr. Tom Ness of Bremerton; one sister, Pat Ness of Bremerton; and six grandchildren, Robert, Kellie and Laurie, all of Salt Lake City, Brent and Jessica, both of Bremerton, and John of Portland.

Helen Otis
Helen Leona Otis, 88, of Port Orchard died Nov. 3, 2002, in Port Orchard.
She was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Proctorsville, Vt., to Loren and Cora (McLane) Britton.
She married
Alton Otis in Boston in 1940. He preceded her in death in 2000.
Mrs. Otis was a homemaker. She had worked as a legal secretary for 20 years, retiring in 1975.
She was affiliated with the Congregationalist faith.
Survivors include one son, Alton Otis Jr. of Port Townsend; one brother, Gene Britton of Titusville, Fla.; two sisters, Eilene Spadelnikas of Philadelphia and Trudi Longnecker of Henderson, Nev.
No services will be held.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton with cremation at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo.

Bert Dopheide
Huburtus P. "Bert" Dopheide, 81, of Bremerton died from a massive stroke Nov. 17, 2002, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Aug. 8, 1921, in The Hague, Netherlands, to Paulus and Maria (Kitums) Dopheide. He was raised and educated in Utrecht, Netherlands.
He immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. He went on to earn a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of California-Berkeley in 1955.
Mr. Dopheide served as an officer and engineer with the Dutch Merchant Marine from 1946 to 1951. From 1957 to 1985, he worked as an electrical engineer at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring as a supervisor in the design shop there.
He married
M. Velma Harrington-Monson on June 26, 1971, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Mr. Dopheide was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton where he taught religious education classes. He also restored televisions and appliances for resale in church fundraising.
For many years, he served as a judge with the Washington State Science Fair at Olympic College. He had a special interest in computers.
Mr. Dopheide was a music lover and organist. He was fluent in seven languages and enjoyed gardening, the beach, mountains, wildlife and vistas of the Pacific Northwest.
His survivors include his wife; three sisters, Anna
Dopheide of Belgium, Franja Spijker of France and Guusie Muller of the Netherlands; many nephews and nieces in the United States and Europe including, Jackie Smalley and her husband, Dean, of Bremerton and DeAnna Kauzlaric and her husband, Brad, of Seabeck; a brother-in-law, Robert Clark and his wife, Roselyn, of Sagle, Idaho. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Petrus, Miep and Liesa.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, followed by a reception at the church. Interment
will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton.

Gene Davies Jr.
Owen E. "Gene" Davies Jr., 64, of Port Orchard died Nov. 17, 2002, of cancer at his home.
He was born Aug. 9, 1938, in Red Lodge, Mont., to Owen and Ann (Tastovorsnik) Davies. He graduated from Red Lodge High School in 1957 and went on to serve in the Navy from 1957 to 1961.
He married
Linda Bernritter on June 16, 1972, in Bremerton.
Following his naval career, Mr. Davies worked for Hamilton's Produce Co., delivering to restaurants in the Yellowstone National Park. He later worked as a general laborer in Oregon
before completing an apprenticeship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He was employed as a shipfitter at PSNS for 27 years, retiring in 1993.
Mr. Davies enjoyed fishing, bowling, hunting, bingo and helping others.
His survivors include his wife; two sons, Tony and Michael Davies, both of Port Orchard; two daughters, Darcia Oefinger of Port
Orchard and Anne Stallard of Forks; one brother, Ed Davies of Port Orchard; one sister, Dorothy Morrison of Wolf Point, Mont.; one nephew; two nieces; and six grandchildren.
An informal gathering will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the home of Ed Davies, 10541 Fairview Blvd. SW in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.

Jeanice Green
Former Bremerton resident Jeanice Marlene (Love) Green, 67, of Redmond died Nov. 17, 2002, of Alzheimer's disease at Lake Vue Gardens in Kirkland.
She was born July 2, 1935, in Missoula, Mont., to Ross and Alma Jean (Price) Love. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 1953 and from Olympic College in 1972.
She married
James F. Green on July 2, 1978, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Green had worked as a registered nurse for 25 years, retiring in 1997.
She enjoyed cooking and was an accomplished seamstress. The apparel she created included wedding
dresses and cheerleading costumes.
Her survivors include her husband; two sons, Lloyd Sayer of Bremerton and Sam Sayer of Chisholm, Minn.;
three daughters, Margaret "Peg" Larson of Port Orchard, Jeannie Conover of
Redmond and Gail Sayer of Kent; one brother, David Love of Carmichael, Calif.; one sister, Jeannette Fox of Bainbridge Island; and nine grandchildren, Rachel, Katie, Dan, Chris, Joe, Julia, Tommy, Quentin and C.J. She was preceded in death by a brother, Burt Love.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Washington Cathedral, 12300 Woodinville-Redmond Road in Redmond.

Joanne Reeves
Former Bremerton resident Joanne Reeves, 70, of Tulsa, Okla., died Nov. 16, 2002, in Tulsa.
She was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Tulsa.
Her survivors include four daughters, Susie Cains and her husband, David, and Beverly and Susan Reeves, all of Bremerton, and Shelly Franklin and her husband, Ron, of Tulsa; three sons, Larry Reeves and his wife,
Charlie, of Olalla, and Michael Reeves and his wife, Misty, and Joseph Reeves, all of Bremerton; two brothers, C.M. Lawrence and his wife, Polly, of Tulsa and Jim Lawrence and his wife, Tricia, of Plano, Texas; one
sister, Maxine Powell and her husband, Bert, of Tulsa; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lether Reeves; her brothers, Aubrey, Bobby Gene, C.J.
and Fielding Lawrence; and her sisters, Joyce Lawrence and Connie Phillips.
Mrs. Reeves was a member of Victory Fellowship Church in Sand Springs, Okla. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Victory Fellowship.
Burial will be at Woodland Memorial Park in Sand Springs under the direction of Mark Griffith Memorial Funeral Home-Riverside Chapel in Sand Springs.
Norma Jean Puthoff
Former Port Orchard resident Norma Jean Puthoff, 72, of Tacoma died Nov. 16, 2002, at Heartwood Care Center in Tacoma.
She was born Nov. 27, 1929, in Kokomo, Ind., to Paul and Margaret (Woodard) Smith.
She had worked as a nurse. She was affiliated with the Catholic faith.
Her survivors include three sons, Michael Puthoff of Yuma, Ariz., Dennis Puthoff of Jamesville, Wis.; and Jay Puthoff of Port Orchard; one daughter, Jackie Brown of Vero Beach, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. A graveside service follows at noon at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
