Ruth Bates
Ruth P. Bates, 76, of Port Orchard died Nov. 9, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born Nov. 24, 1925, in Ithica, N.Y., to Isaac and Elta (Cox) Price. She attended high school in Santa Rosa, Calif.
She married
Homer Bates in Santa Rosa. He preceded her in death in 1953.
Mrs. Bates worked as a cosmetologist and as an instructor at a beauty college in Santa Rosa. She also worked at a J.C. Penney Co. styling salon, retiring in 1988.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by three daughters, Theresa Johnson of Belfair and Vicki Lee Bates and Ann Bates of Fairfield, Calif.; a brother, Donald Deas and his wife, Patricia, of Grass Valley, Calif.; three sisters, Maxine Fisher and her husband, Charles, of New Bedford, Pa., and Eva Cook and Mary Ball of Matewan, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Michael Johnson and wife Michelle, Patrick Johnson and wife Katie, Christopher Johnson and wife Brooke, and Jacob Johnson and wife Deanne; and five great-grandchildren, Tony, Amanda, Katie, Julie and Terri Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather, Duffy Deas.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard. Inurnment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Twin Firs cemetery in Belfair.
Kenny Richmond
Former Port Orchard resident Kenneth James "Kenny" Richmond, 44, of Gig Harbor died of a heart attack Oct. 26, 2002, at his home.
He was born March 17, 1958, in Davenport, Iowa, to Ronald and Jacqueline Richmond. He attended high school in Walnut Creek, Calif.
A musician all his adult life, he found his first electric guitar at the dump when he was 8 years old and modified it to his liking.
He played in bands in the San Francisco area until moving to Kitsap County in 1992.
He was bass player with the local band Roman Fingers for seven years, then played with the band Surgeon General's Warning for two years. The two groups played numerous benefit concerts to aid food banks in Kitsap County.
Survivors include his mother, now of California, and two brothers, Douglas and Tom, both of California.
A celebration of his life will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at J.A. Michaels Restaurant & Lounge, 715 Bay St. in Port Orchard.

Gertrude Klieves
Gertrude Lefler Klieves, 86, of Bremerton died of cancer Nov. 6, 2002, in Bremerton.
She was born May 22, 1916, in Federal Way to Ida (Kusserow) and Harry B. Lefler Sr.
She graduated in 1934 from Forks High School in Forks.
She married
Corole Klieves. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. Klieves enjoyed travel, dogs and pets.
Survivors include a brother, Harry Lefler Jr. of Forks; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vesta Lefler.
At the family's request, no services will be held. Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Crematory, with arrangements by Lewis Funeral Chapel.

E. Margaret Massee
Erie Margaret Massee, 71, of Gig Harbor died following a lengthy illness Nov. 7, 2002, at her home.
She was born in Shaunovan, Saskatchewan, Canada, in 1931 to Kenneth and Christine (Taylor) Vandruff. She later attended nursing school at Sacred Heart in Spokane.
She married
Paul C. Massee in Seattle. They were married
43 years.
Mrs. Massee worked as a registered nurse for many years. Eighteen of those years were spent at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She and her husband also owned and operated the Gig Harbor Hardware Co. before selling the business in 1979.
Mrs. Massee retired in 1997 and traveled extensively with her husband. She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Gig Harbor.
Survivors include her husband, of Gig Harbor; four sons, Kenneth Massee and his wife, Liz, Jim Massee and his wife, Gretchen, and Paul J. Massee, all of Gig Harbor, and Michael Massee of Lake Stevens; a daughter, Anne Garnaas and her husband, Cory, of Gig Harbor; a brother, Peter Vandruff of Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Lida Flynn of Vida, Ore.; and six grandchildren.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Gig Harbor. Interment
will be at Haven of Rest Funeral Home cemetery in Gig Harbor.

James Mason
James L. Mason, 76, of Silverdale died of a ruptured aorta Nov. 5, 2002, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Parco, Ala., to James G. and Thelma J. (Borella) Mason.
He married
Elizabeth J. Fadon on March 21, 1949, in Edison. She died in 1985.
Mr. Mason served in the Navy from 1944 until his retirement in 1968, achieving the rank of boatswain's mate second class.
After his naval career, he served aboard the Discoverer for 10 years with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. He retired in the early 1980s.
Mr. Mason was a member of the Silverdale Branch Fleet Reserve. He loved watching the Mariners and Seahawks.
Survivors include one daughter, Thelma A. Turner of Kingston and Reba McKinnon of Salem, Ore.; one brother, Paul B. Mason of Ensley, Ala.; one sister, Betty J. Sparks of Ensley; and three grandchildren, Stacy and Cheri Turner, and Elizabeth McKinnon.
At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
Penny Williams
Jennie "Penny" Williams, 77, of Port Orchard died of cancer Nov. 4, 2002, at her home.
She was born March 13, 1925, in New Orleans to Paul and Theresa (Capello) Gandolfo. She graduated from high school in Louisiana.
She married
Shirley "Willie" Williams on April 11, 1948, in New Orleans. Mrs. Williams was a homemaker who raised three sons.
She avidly collected all kinds of items - vintage clothing, glassware, trinkets and jewelry - and often gave items to others. She owned a collection of more than 2, 000 dolls.
Mrs. Williams also is said to have enjoyed giving advice. Her church affiliation was Catholic.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Rick and Pete Williams, both of Port Orchard, and Paul Williams of South Carolina; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel in Port Orchard.

Judith Helland
Judith Carolyn Helland, 55, of Olalla died of cancer Nov. 4, 2002, in Olalla.
She was born June 15, 1947, in Jacksonville, Texas, to Leon and Lillie (Lindstrom) Sparkman. She graduated from Highline High School in Burien in 1965, from Olympic College in 1969, and also attended the University of Washington in Seattle.
She married
Robert Theodore Helland on Dec. 30, 1966, in Des Moines, Wash.
Mrs. Helland was a homemaker who home-schooled her children. She enjoyed politics and encouraging others to read.
She was a member of Burley Bible Church.
Survivors include her husband; her parents, of Olalla; four sons, James Russell Helland of Palermo, Italy, Michael Theodore Helland of Henniker, N.H., David Andrew Helland of Big Sandy, Texas, and Joseph Nathaniel Helland of Olalla; three daughters, Rebekah Carol Helland and Karen Elizabeth Helland, both of Olympia, and Sarah Christine Helland of Olalla; one sister, Susan Malinda Sparkman of Olalla; and three grandchildren, Judson, Judah and Liesl Helland, all of Henniker.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 17 at Chapel Hill Presbyterian Church in Gig Harbor.

Donald Jacobs
Donald Paul Jacobs, 65, of Bremerton died after a short illness Nov. 3, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Bremerton on
May 1, 1937, to Richard E. and Peggy Jacobs. In 1955, he graduated from Bremerton High School, where he was outstanding in baseball and basketball.
Mr. Jacobs continued as a basketball star at Olympic College. He attended San Diego State University on a basketball scholarship and pursued a degree in engineering.
He served in the Army and returned to the Seattle area, finishing his education at the University of Washington. He went on to work for Boeing and Lockheed.
Mr. Jacobs became an active member of the Kitsap Golf and Country Club in 1963 while still living in Seattle. He was club golf champion in 1970 and 1980, serving as the men's division captain for more than 20 years.
He returned to Bremerton in the early 1970s when he began working for PARA. He retired from there in 1997 after nearly 25 years.
Mr. Jacobs was active in the local YMCA. He continued enjoying golf, skiing and hiking until a few months before his death.
Survivors include his wife, Toni Kemp-Jacobs; two brothers, Richard E. Jacobs Jr. of Electric City and Dr. Robert A. Jacobs and his wife, Judie, of Pauma Valley, Calif.; and two nephews and three nieces, including Kim Ragains of Bremerton.
A private family service was at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. An open house will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Kitsap Golf and Country Club.

Thomas Metcalf
Former Bremerton resident Thomas Merle Metcalf, 75, of Coolville, Ohio, died Sept. 24, 2002, in Coolville. The Sun has just been notified of his death.
Mr. Metcalf was born Oct. 21, 1926, in Athens, Ohio, to Pearly Donald and Regina Catherine (Conrath) Metcalf. He graduated from Athens High School in Athens, Ohio, in 1946.
Mr. Metcalf served in the Navy from 1946 until his retirement in 1966.
He went on to work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring after 20 years. He enjoyed fishing and had been a commercial fisherman.
Mr. Metcalf was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans in Bremerton and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in both Bremerton and The Plains, Ohio. He also belonged to the Elks lodge in Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Metcalf; three sons, Donald, Gregory and Thomas, all of the Bremerton area; four daughters, Linda, Judy and Nancy, all of the Bremerton area, and Suanne of Tacoma; five stepdaughters; three sisters, Roselee DeWeese of The Plains, Dianne "Susie" Douglas of Columbus, Ohio, and Marylou Setz of Mount Gilead, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by siblings Jack, Richard and Thelma Jean.
A private service will be held next fishing season in Westport.
Lucile Kant
Former Bremerton resident Lucile Lichter Kant, 98, of Olympia died Nov. 6, 2002, in Olympia.
She was born Jan. 23, 1904, in West Plain, Mo., to Henry Otto and Anna Pahrmann. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament High School in Seattle in 1923.
She was a resident of Bremerton for more than 50 years. While living in Bremerton, she was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
Her favorite pastimes were reading, music and travel.
Survivors include one son, Robert L. Lichter and his wife, Deloris, of Olympia; five daughters, Rose L. Schultz of Spokane, Georgia A. Banasiak of Bremerton, Margaret M. Lichter and Donna D. Wilkie, both of Seattle, and Kathleen C. Krankel and her husband, Herman, of Pennsylvania; three stepchildren, Charlotte Silverman, Thelma Sameth and Harold Kant; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Anton C. Lichter in 1957; her husband Samuel D. Kant in 1988; one sister, Anna Hokanson; one brother, John Pahrmann; and two grandchildren, Deborah and Michael Wenzel.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Olympia. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ivy Green cemetery in Bremerton. Arrangements are under the direction of Mills and Mills Funeral Home in Olympia.
