Freda Motzkus
Freda Motzkus, 93, of Quincy died Jan. 16, 1999, at the Quincy Valley Hospital.
She was born June 19, 1905, in Kallikin, Switzerland, to Jacob and Elsie Hilfiker. She came to the United States with her family in 1914.
In 1924, she married
William C. Motzkus. He preceded her in death in 1987. She resided in the Crosby and Bremerton areas until 1954, when she moved to Quincy.
Survivors include two sons, William of Quincy and Robert of Wasilla, Alaska; a daughter, Berniece Blees of Bremerton; a sister, Martha Sacker of Bremerton; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her brother.
A memorial service was conducted Jan. 21 at Schorback's Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy.
Mary Lanphere
Mary Eleanor Lanphere, 84, of Bremerton died Jan. 18, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Strawberry County, Kan., to Ray and Zoe (Stewart) Randall. She was raised and educated in Seattle, graduating from Queen Anne High School in 1932.
On June 3, 1938, she married
Daniel W. Lanphere. He preceded her in death in 1983.
Mrs. Lanphere worked as a housekeeper and did sewing during the Depression. She later worked as a receptionist in a doctor's office.
She was a member of the Pythian Sisters, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Bethany Lutheran Church in Seattle. For the past four years she attended Manette Community Church and was a member of the Bremerton Senior Center.
Survivors include a son, George of Enumclaw; a daughter, Mary Hensley of Bremerton; a sister, Grace Schmidt of Seattle; 10 grandchildren, Tim, Joel, James, Jon and Jennifer Hensley, Jannelle Hieden, Janet Halvorson, Sherrie Fricks, Karie Stroud and Charlotte Fourre; and 25 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Manette Community Church, East 13th and Hayward. Cremation will be at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Arthur Smith
Former longtime Bremerton resident Arthur "Popcorn" Smith, 86, died Jan. 11, 1999, in Hemet, Calif.
He was born Dec. 16, 1912. He acquired the nickname "Popcorn" Smith during World War II, when he owned and operated a popcorn wagon on the corner near the Bremerton ferry terminal and the old YMCA building downtown. He worked in Shop 396, maintenance, at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1970.
Mr. Smith was an active member of the Elks in Bremerton and belonged to Lodge 1740 in Hemet.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; a stepson; a stepdaughter; and a sister.
He was interred in Bellevue, Ill.
Helen Ballew
Helen Z. Ballew, 88, of Olalla died Jan. 20, 1999, at her home.
She was born Jan. 21, 1910, in Santa Cruz, Calif., to Ted and Arlene Mastick.
Survivors include a son, Duane of Gig Harbor; and a brother, Edwin of Port Orchard.
At her request, there will be no formal services. A gathering of friends will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 at the clubhouse at Pine Lake Estates off Peacock Road.
Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Ruby Connell
Ruby Lillian Connell, 92, of Port Orchard died Jan. 24, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Oct. 9, 1906, in Brownsville, Ill., to George and Della (Brown) Rexer. She was raised in Missouri and Arkansas.
In January of 1926, she married
A.B. Connell in Little Rock, Ark. He preceded her in death in 1966.
Mrs. Connell worked as a nurse for 17 years with the Los Angeles County Sanitarium.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Bonnie Collins of Port Orchard and Patricia Brynie of Bremerton; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A private family interment will be conducted at Hillside Memorial Park in Redlands, Calif.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
David Mead
David M. Mead, 74, of Port Orchard died of cancer Jan. 16, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 24, 1924, in Leavenworth, Kan., to David and Mary (Hart) Mead.
On July 5, 1946, he married
Patricia Nolan in Port Orchard.
Mr. Mead served in the Army from 1943 to 1946, as a paratrooper. He was awarded the American Theater Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Victory Medal. He was later self-employed as a masonry contractor.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Brennan of Belfair and Debbie Christenson of Port Orchard; two brothers, Eugene of Port Orchard and King Anderson of San Jose, Calif.; a sister, Josephine Seachord of Port Orchard; eight grandchildren, Patrick Tiffany Jr., Sheri Tiffany, David and Mickey Cotter, all of Bremerton, Kristin and Kari Brennan, and Kevin and Kyle Bell, all of Port Orchard; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 13 at the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil, with a potluck immediately following.
Rose Webster-Mahan
Rose Ann Webster-Mahan, 50, of Belfair died Jan. 20, 1999, in Belfair.
She was born Sept. 9, 1948, in Denver to Louis and Emma (Zabloudil) Smith. She was raised in Denver.
Mrs. Webster-Mahan was a four-year member of the Master Gardeners of Washington.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Mahan; a son, James Webster of New Cumberston, Ohio; a daughter, Barbara McMahon of Belfair; two sisters, Carey of Spokane and Doris of Denver; and three grandchildren, Amber and Megan McMahon, both of Belfair and Ryan Webster of New Cumberston.
There will be no services.
Adele Isbell
Adele Jean Isbell, 72, of Bremerton died of cancer Jan. 15, 1999, in Bellevue.
She was born Aug. 20, 1926, in Milwaukee to Elmer and Luella (Dwyer) Waldeschmidt. She was raised in Whitefish Bay, Wis., graduating from Whitefish Bay High School in 1944. She later attended Grosmount Community College in San Diego.
On Dec. 30, 1950, she married
Eugene E. Isbell in Elmhurst, Ill. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. Isbell worked as a secretary and a homemaker, retiring in 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel of Tahuya and Michael of Bremerton; a daughter, Cori Lee Jantz of Eureka, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Betty Yurgalevicz of Bremerton; four brothers, Ken of Brown Deer, Wis., John of Sullivan, Wis., Elmer of Libertyville, Ill., and Jerry of Grafton, Wis.; two sisters, June Wieland and Janet Swiderski, both of Milwaukee; and nine grandchildren, Leigha Campbell of Bremerton, Shannon, Sarah and Lisa Isbell, all of Tahuya, Emily, Rachel and Ethan Jantz, all of Eureka and Matthe w and Andrew Isbell, both of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by a son, David.
Services were conducted Jan. 23 at Star of the Sea Church. Cremation arrangements were by Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle.

Michael Baker
Michael S. Baker, 76, of Belfair died Jan. 4, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born April 4, 1922, in Kansas City, Kan., to Arthur and Mayme (Butler) Baker. He was raised in Saint Louis, Mo.
On Aug. 11, 1958, he married
F. Ann McFadden in Bellflower, Calif. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Baker served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 on the USS Samaritan in the American area and the Asiatic-Pacific. He was awarded the Victory Medal. From 1946 to 1952, he worked as a photographer. He later worked for 32 years as a production superintendent for Filtrol Chemical Company in Vernon, Calif., retiring in 1984.
He and his wife were instrumental in the building of the Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Belfair. He was a member of the church building committee from 1986 to 1993.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel of Manasquan, N.J., and William Scrimpsher of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Mock of Belfair; four grandchildren, Laura Baker of Manasquan, Michael Mock of Portland, Ore., Jason Scrimpsher of Cypress, Calif., and Michelle Scrimpsher of Huntington Beach; and three great-grandchildren.
Mass was conducted Jan. 8 at Prince of Peace Church.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Dorothy McCarn
Dorothy I. McCarn, 87, died Jan. 15, 1999.
She was born, raised and married
in the Joplin, Mo., area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack F. McCarn in 1987.
Mrs. McCarn was a past president of the Stereotypers Women's Auxiliary, a life-long member of the Bremerton "Yachet" Club and an active member in the Evergreen Rock Club. She participated in Lone Scout programs with her husband and was a four-day member of the Shoreline Adult Day Health Program.
Survivors include a son, Jack of Port Orchard; two daughters, Clydean McCarn and Mary Prigmore, both of Seattle; a half brother, John Edwards; a half sister, Peggy Sadler; a stepsister, Sue Ernest; seven grandchildren, Tamara O'Dell, Michael McCarn, Terry, Mark and Lisa Prigmore, Mollie Heilesen and Craig McCarn; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services were conducted Jan. 18 at Evergreen Baptist Church, Seattle. Interment
was at Evergreen cemetery.
