Walter Dodge
Walter "Walt" M. Dodge, 89, of Port Orchard died Jan. 5, 1999, of natural causes.
He was born May 16, 1909, in Antigo, Wis., to Matt and Ann (Kamps) Dodge. He was raised in Antigo, graduating from Antigo High School in 1928.
On June 26, 1971, he married
Viola M. Foster in Port Orchard.
Mr. Dodge worked at the Sturgeon Bay Shipyard in Wisconsin prior to moving to Washington. He then worked as a foreman electrician at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 27 years, retiring in 1972.
He was a member of the Eagles Aerie 2338 in Port Orchard, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Bethel Grange and the Bethel Volunteer Fire Department, District 7.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Lee of Key Center; two daughters, Joanne Hart of Homer, Alaska, and Judy Gertsch of Port Orchard; a sister, Joy Ewert of Clintonville, Wis.; seven grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Donne, in 1978.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 8 and from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 9, with funeral services following at 1:30 p.m., all at Rill Chapel.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Frances Whitmore
Frances Beatrice Whitmore, 84, of Bremerton died Jan. 4, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 5, 1914, in Hartford, Alaska, to Harold and Nellie (McConnell) Larson. She was raised in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Montana, graduating from Great Falls High School in 1935.
On June 17, 1935, she married
Marvin Frederick Whitmore in Glasgow, Mont. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Whitmore was active in the Bible Study Fellowship and the PTA for many years, and was a member of the Ladies of Elks and the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.
Survivors include a son, Earl "Bud" of Anderson, Calif.; a daughter, Marlene Yeager of Austin, Texas; six grandchildren, Eric and Jeffrey Yeager, both of Austin, Steve and Ginny Lynn Whitmore, both of Seattle, and Michael and Grace Yeager, both of Houston; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 at Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.

Willie Gubser
Willie Gubser, 80, of Port Orchard died Dec. 31, 1998, at his home.
He was born in Switzerland, and moved to Washington at age 3.
During his last 45 years, he was engaged in the Christian ministry and served as an elder in the Port Orchard congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Survivors include his wife; a son, David of Alaska; a daughter, Dolores Von Kaenel; a sister, Hedwig Riebli of Ephrata; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Port Orchard Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1901 Bielmeier Road SE.
Diana DeRoche'
Diana Maria DeRoche', 52, of Silverdale died Jan. 4, 1999, in Silverdale.
She was born Sept. 12, 1946, in Braaschot, Belgium, to Thomas and Maria (Simons) DeRoche'. She was raised and attended Catholic school in Ishpeming, Mich. She later earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at Seattle University.
Ms. DeRoche' worked with mentally ill and long-term patients as a nurse. She was employed by Kimberly Quality Care.
She was an affiliate of Star of the Sea.
Survivors include her fiance, Charles Johnson of Silverdale; her parents; a son, James Ablitt of Port Orchard; three daughters, Leslie Jacobson of Port Orchard, Kimberly Ablitt of Silverdale and Julie Ablitt of Port Orchard; two sisters, Evangeline of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Yvonne Weller of Spokane; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Nader in 1993.
Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Jan. 8, with a funeral service immediately following, both will be held at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Interment
will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Chester Proffitt
Chester "Chris" Hoge Proffitt, 68, of Port Orchard died Jan. 6, 1999, at his home.
He was born Jan. 5, 1931, in White Hall, Va., to Thomas and Stella (Wray) Proffitt. He was raised and educated in White Hall, Va.
On June 27, 1975, he married
Edna Bartch.
Mr. Proffitt served in the Navy from 1951 to 1975. He later worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 17 years, retiring in 1993.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ron Coleman Jr. of Port Orchard; three daughters, Cindy Coleman of Graham, Tammy Brittain of Port Orchard and Barbara Henderson of North Dakota; two brothers, Glenn and Renick, both of Virginia; a sister, June Bessell of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Brittney and Tony Maloney, both of Graham, Ronny Coleman III of Port Orchard, and Billy, Tony, Jeromy and Dawn Henderson, all of North Dakota; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 9 at Miller Woodlawn Chapel.

Edward Logsdon
Edward "Ed" E. Logsdon, 69, of Port Orchard died Jan. 5, 1999, at his home.
He was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to Robert and Elma Logsdon. He was raised in Bedford, Penn.
On Dec. 21, 1951, he married
his wife, Rosalie, in Seattle. She preceded him in death in 1994.
Mr. Logsdon served in the Army for three years. He worked for the Teamsters as a warehouseman in Baltimore, Md., for 17 years. He then worked as a custodian at South Kitsap High School from 1974 to 1982.
Survivors include four sons, Terry of New York, Gary of Tacoma and Tim and Jay, both of Port Orchard; two daughters, Dianne Matheson and Karla Oakley, both of Port Orchard; two brothers, Ronald of Port Orchard and Robert Jr. of Pennsylvania; a sister, Betty Sheir of Pennsylvania; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be conducted.

Donald Bretey
Donald C. Bretey, 83, of Port Orchard died Jan. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 2, 1915, in Crawford, , Neb., to John and Edna (Metz) Bretey. He was raised in Nebraska, Colorado and Wyoming.
Mr. Bretey worked as a mechanic in Shop 6 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 23 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles and of the Masonic and Moose lodges, in Wyoming.
Survivors include his wife, Guleda (Wolfe) Bretey; three sons, Donald of Phoenix, Larry of Pete's Creek, Alaska, and Robert of Port Orchard; a daughter, Linda Lyczewski of Great Falls, Mont.; a brother, Jack of Alcova, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at Rill Chapel.

Ricky Dodd
Ricky Lee Dodd, 51, of Bremerton died Dec. 4, 1998, at the family home.
He was born Sept. 10, 1947, in Berkeley, Calif., to Harold and Ida Mae (Redding) Dodd. He graduated from James Logan High School in Union City, Calif.
Survivors include his wife Barbra; his mother and stepfather, Ida and Lyle Worden of Port Orchard; three sons, Kanoa of San Francisco, and Adam and Harold, both of Bremerton; three sisters, Geneva Flolo, Chyrel Pennington and Donna Williams, all of Port Orchard; and a grandson, Nigal.
A memorial service will be at noon Jan. 8 at the Unity Church of Bremerton, 1712 Trenton Ave., Bremerton. A celebration of his life will follow the service.
Lubertha Ross
Lubertha Ross, 85, of Port Orchard died Jan. 5, 1999, in Port Orchard.
She was born March 16, 1913, in Ethel, La., to Sylvester and Leaner (Jones) Robertson. She was raised and educated in Ethel.
Mrs. Ross was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Women's Department of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church and the Sewing Circle at St. Luke's Methodist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Terry of Port Orchard and Donald of Spokane; three daughters, Gloria Taylor of Renton and Bea Smith and Tami Ross, both of Port Orchard; two brothers, Lee and Otis, both of Louisiana; three sisters, Clara Harris, Lonie Mae Griffin and Adell Robertson, all of Louisiana; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan L. Ross in 1998. She was also preceded in death by a son, three brothers and one sister.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 13 at Miller Woodlawn. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 14 at Miller Woodlawn Chapel.

Quentin Darby
Quentin Edwin Darby, 51, of Poulsbo died Dec. 31, 1998.
He was born May 14, 1947, to Quentin D. and Geraldine Darby. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1965.
On Aug. 23, 1979, he married
Marti Lee in Reno, Nev.
Mr. Darby served in the Air Force from 1965 to 1969. He later worked as a retail manager for 23 years.
He was a member of the Bremerton Elks Lodge 1181 for 26 years, serving on the board of trustees and as chairman of the house.
He was elected as the lodge's officer of the year for 1994-1995. He was also involved with the Tracyton PeeWees.
Survivors include his wife; his father; two sons, Mark of Bremerton and Johnathan of Everett; and a sister, Dianne Layton of Lynnwood.
A memorial service, followed by a celebration of his life, will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 7 at the Bremerton Elks Lodge 1181, 4131 Pine Road, Bremerton.
