Bruce Whitlock
Bruce Allen Whitlock, 29, of Bremerton died Jan. 1, 1999.
He was born April 13, 1969, in Lawton, Okla., to Cecil and Amelia (Gonzales) Whitlock. He lived in Moses Lake before moving to Bremerton in 1975. He graduated from Olympic High School in 1987 and attended Olympic College and Washington State University.
Mr. Whitlock worked as a landscaper.
He was a member of the Central Kitsap Church of Christ.
Survivors include his parents; two sons, Daniel Whitlock and Larry Bullard, both of Bremerton; a brother, Bryan of Bremerton; a sister, Jeannette Forster of Bremerton; his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Kelly of Moses Lake; and his maternal grandmother, Ermila Gonzales of Moses Lake.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Central Kitsap Church of Christ, 11898 Central Valley Road, Silverdale. Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Melville Swedback
Melville Carl Swedback, 94, of Bremerton died Jan. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Jan. 25, 1904, in Bemidji, Minn., to Charles and Minnie (Nelson) Swedback. He was raised and educated in Minnesota.
On June 28, 1927, he married
Leda DeRosier in Bemidji, Minn.
She preceded him in death in 1988.
Mr. Swedback came to Bremerton in 1940, and worked as a rigger at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 25 years, retiring in 1966.
He was a member of the Lincoln Avenue Bible Church.
Survivors include a son, Ronald of Bremerton; a daughter, Mildred McCormick of Shreveport, La.; 12 grandchildren, Kim Coffman, Wendy Ellis, Ellen Skubic, Ruth Utter, Renee Boyd, Annette Walker, Kristin Graham, Heidi Hoffman, Dianna McCormick, Kurt Hoffman and Douglas and Steven Lakey; and 12 great-grandchildren He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Lakey; and a grandson, Brian Swedback.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until noon Jan. 8, with a funeral service following at 1 p.m., both at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.

George Topasna
George Rodriquez Topasna, 36, of Bremerton died Jan. 1, 1999, at Seattle Veterans Hospital.
He was born Aug. 19, 1962, in Tamuning, Guam, to Jose and Maria (Quintanilla) Topasna.
He was raised in California, graduating from San Clemente High School in 1980.
Mr. Topasna served in the Army from 1980 to 1986.
He worked as a stage hand in Las Vegas before moving to Washington.
He was a volunteer for the Humane Society.
Survivors include his mother; five brothers, Joseph Rodriquez of Allentown, Ohio, John of Carson, Calif., Joe of Santa Rita, Guam, Tony of Long Beach, Calif., and Mike of Corona, Calif.; three sisters, Doris Taitano of Okinawa, Mary Salas of Vallejo, Calif., and Lori Topasna of Carson, Calif.; his maternal grandmother, Conception Quintanilla of Long Beach, Calif.; and his companion of five years, Caleb Chaundy of Bremerton.
Visitation will be Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following, both at Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.
Lyle Clayton
Lyle William Clayton, 94, of Bremerton died Dec. 25, 1998, at his granddaughter's home in Port Orchard, of prostate cancer.
He was born July 13, 1904, in Newkirk, Okla., to John and Maime (Wheeler) Clayton. He was raised in Plainview, Texas.
Mr. Clayton served in the Marine Corps from 1927 to the early 1930s.
He was a pistol expert, moving from San Diego, Calif., to Shanghai, China, for the first two years of service. Most recently, he worked for Lentz until his retirement.
He was a member of the Eagles and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his companion, "Ginny" of Port Hadlock; two daughters, Beetta Gregory of Arizona and Delores Kupa of San Diego; a brother, John Clayton of Plainview, Texas; a sister, Betty Hays of Canyon, Texas; nine grandchildren, Joni Thompson of Port Orchard, James Jordan of Sequim, Robert Nelsen of California, Cara Ottele of Port Angeles, Bruce and Larry Morris, both of Port Orchard, Kevin Morris of Bremerton, and Kris and Danny Clayton; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years and two sons.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 9 at the VFW Post 4760 in Sequim.
Francisco Rivera
Francisco D.C. Rivera, 77, of Bremerton died Dec. 22, 1998, at Forest Ridge Convalescent Center.
He was born Sept. 26, 1921, in Hilo, Hawaii.
Mr. Rivera worked in the machine shop of a pineapple company on the island of Lanai. He moved to Bremerton in 1953, and worked as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard until his retirement in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Alice of Bremerton; two sons, Dan Austad of Silverdale and Alexander Rivera of Los Angeles; and three sisters, Isobel Rodrigues of Tualutia, Ore., Rose Sanlorenzo of San Francisco and Theresa Cruz of Maui, Hawaii.
Earl Welch
Earl Eugene Welch, 75, of Tracyton died Dec. 31, 1998, in Bremerton of respiratory failure.
He was born June 11, 1923, in Tracyton to Lee and Violet (Kimball) Welch. He was raised in Tracyton, graduating from Port Washington Bay Union High School in 1941.
On July 21, 1962, he married
Nancy Ritsch in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Welch served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 as a cryptographer in New Guinea during and after World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. He later worked for 15 years as a truck driver with Kenyon's Materials until his retirement in 1978.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served on the Tracyton Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Raymond of Tracyton and Steven of Seattle; two daughters, Sandra Whitney of Tracyton and Teresa Christnacht of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Milford "Pete" of Grayland; eight grandchildren, Donald Whitney Jr., Kevin Whitney, Lynette Pantaleo, Kristi Welch, Stacy Skodje, and Nevin, Cheridan and Jencyn Christnacht; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Jan. 6 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

Gladys Bond
Gladys Naomi Bond, 82, of Poulsbo died Jan. 2, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
She was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Baker, Ore., to Clyde and Elizabeth (Butterfield) Macy. She was raised in Baker, Ore., graduating from Baker High School.
On Dec. 26, 1936, she married
Jay Ronald Bond in Baker, Ore.
Mrs. Bond worked at the machine shop office at Keyport Torpedo Station during World War II. She also worked at the Family Florist at Viking Junction. She was a homemaker.
She was a deaconess at Scandia Bible Church and an active member of the Philosophical and Educational Organization and garden clubs.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cheryl of Port Orchard; two brothers, Bobby of Portland, Ore., and Johnny of Baker, Ore.; two sisters, Norma Smith of Baker, Ore., and Pauline Spangler of Boise, Idaho; and one grandchild, Allison Riehl of Seattle. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice, in 1972; and a brother, Billy, in 1997.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 6 at Poulsbo Mortuary, "The Stone Chapel." A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 7 at Scandia Bible Church, 16748 Scandia Road NW, Poulsbo. A private family interment will take place at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Robert Carriere Sr.
Robert Albert Carriere Sr., 71, of Allyn died Jan. 2, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Aug. 30, 1927, in Kitsap County to Angel-Marie (Leclerg) Birkland and Frank Carriere. He was raised in Poulsbo.
He retired from A.O. Smith in Seattle.
He was a volunteer for the Department of Natural Resources in Belfair.
Survivors include two daughters, Bijou White of Belfair and Susan York of Oklahoma; and two grandchildren, Tim White of Silverdale and Lisa White of Wauna. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lee Colleen (Kridenear) Carriere in 1997; and by his son, Paul Albert Carriere Jr.

Robert Lenk
Robert H. Lenk, 83, of Belfair died Dec. 25, 1998.
He was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, to Carl and Elizabeth (Hormell) Lenk. He was raised and educated in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School.
Mr. Lenk served in ministry as one of Jehovah's Witnesses beginning in the mid-1940s. He served as a circuit overseer and special pioneer in Midwestern and Western states. He also served in Bolivia. Most recently, he served as an elder in the Belfair Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses for six years.
He is survived by a sister, Margaret Thompson of Centralia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Maxine Lenk, in 1997.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 241 E Alta Drive, Belfair.
Marjorie Hong
Marjorie Doris Hong, 84, of Bremerton died Dec. 30, 1998, at Northwoods Lodge.
She was born Aug. 25, 1914, in Seattle to Leon and Doretta (Geck) Younger. She was raised in Seattle, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1932.
On Aug. 5, 1938, she married
Stephen Olaf Hong in Seattle. He preceded her in death on Dec. 26.
She was a member of the Silverdale United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Olympic View Community Club and the Old Vintage Auto Club of Silverdale.
Survivors include a son, David of Duvall; two daughters, Stephanie "Taffy" Satter of Bremerton and Maxine Daniels of Kent; a brother, Robert Younger of Anacortes and Yuma, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, Jodi Fordahl and Scott Satter, both of Bremerton, Troy and Todd Daniels, both of Kent, Stephen, Bryan, Daryl and Andrew Hong, all of Duvall and Shelly Laigo of Lynnwood; and eight great-grandchildren.
A double memorial service for husband and wife was conducted Dec. 31, 1998, at the Silverdale United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.
