Elizabeth Sheffield
Elizabeth "Betty" C. Sheffield, 80, of Bremerton died of cancer March 22, 1999, at Ridgemont Terrace.
She was born June 7, 1918, in Lustre, Mont., to Abraham and Anna (Janzen) Baker.
On Sept. 21, 1968, she married
Neil Sheffield in Bremerton.
Mrs. Sheffield worked at J.C. Penney in Bremerton in the 1950s. Later, she held a position at the Bremerton Housing Authority and at the Kitsap County Auditor's Office in Port Orchard.
Her last position was held at the Bremerton-Kitsap County Health District, from which she retired in 1975.
She was a member of the Central Valley Garden Club and Olympic Chapter 216 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Loop of Port Orchard; three granddaughters, Cheryl Garcia of Bremerton, Vicki Tabert of Port Orchard and Sandra Johns of Bothell; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Moldenhauer, in 1967 and by her second husband, Neil, in 1996.
There will be no service. Arrangements are under the direction of Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society.

Wendy Lorraine Vant
Wendy Lorraine Vant, 42, of Bremerton died March 15, 1999, in a train accident near Bourbonnais, Ill.
She was born March 22, 1956, in Bremerton to Vergil and Leona (Pygott) Vant. She grew up in Bremerton, graduating from Central Kitsap High School in 1974.
She worked as a purchaser at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport for 15 years. She began her federal employment in Seattle.
Her parents and her best friend, Helena Adkins, died with her in the accident.
She is survived by a brother, John of Port Orchard, and five sisters, Valerie Hinkle of Burlington, Robbyn Handel of Bremerton, Virginia Vant of Bremerton, Melissa Flowers of St. Marys, Ga., and Rebecca Phillips of Gig Harbor.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Leona Patricia Vant
Leona Patricia (Pygott) Vant, 71, of Bremerton died March 15, 1999, in a train accident near Bourbonnais, Ill.
She was born March 17, 1927, in Wenatchee to Sydney and Adah B. (Unger) Pygott. She grew up in Wenatchee and in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1945.
She was briefly employed in the sheetmetal shop at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a helper after World War II. Later she worked at Merit Mart (now Eagle Hardware) in East Bremerton for eight years.
She was a member of Merry Menders, a group of volunteers who mend clothing for nursing home patients.
She married
Vergil A. Vant on Feb. 26, 1944, in Bremerton. Her husband and daughter, Wendy Lorraine Vant, died with her in the accident.
Survivors include a son, John of Port Orchard; five daughters, Valerie Hinkle of Burlington, Robbyn Handel of Bremerton, Virginia Vant of Bremerton, Melissa Flowers of St. Marys, Ga., and Rebecca Phillips of Gig Harbor; two sisters, Hazel Jordan and Virginia Hartley, both of Wenatchee; 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stan and Syd.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Vergil Arthur Vant
Vergil Arthur Vant, 76, of Bremerton died March 15, 1999, in a train accident near Bourbonnais, Ill.
He was born Nov. 21, 1922, in Casper, Wyo., to Floyd R. and Ethel M. (Galutia) Vant. He moved to Auburn in 1930, then to Bremerton in 1939. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1942.
He served in the Army from 1943 to 1945. He was a private first class and a tank driver in the 7th Armored Division. He participated in five major campaigns, including the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.
He worked as a sheetmetal mechanic in Shop 17 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 32 years, retiring in April 1979. He had also worked as a rigger helper at PSNS from 1942 to 1943.
He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington state, building bridges, campgrounds, trails and fire lookouts.
He married
Leona P. Pygott on Feb. 26, 1944, in Bremerton. He died with his wife and their daughter, Wendy Lorraine Vant, in the accident.
Survivors include a son, John of Port Orchard; five daughters, Valerie Hinkle of Burlington, Robbyn Handel of Bremerton, Virginia Vant of Bremerton, Melissa Flowers of St. Marys, Ga., and Rebecca Phillips of Gig Harbor; a sister, Hazel Danel of Port Orchard; 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Raymond and Fayburn, and a sister, Dorothy Marcear.

Clinton Porter
Clinton Porter, 73, of Port Ludlow died of leukemia March 22, 1999.
He was born March 25, 1925, in Port Townsend to William and Jennie (Swanson) Porter. He was raised in Port Ludlow, graduating from Chimacum High School in 1943. He graduated from Washington State University in 1952 and from Stanford University in 1970.
On June 17, 1950, he married
Shirley Tolle in Seattle.
Mr. Porter served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948. He worked as a teacher in the Kelso School District from 1953 to 1958, and then as a teacher and coach for the Chimacum School District until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church, the Chimacum Grange, the Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association, the Port Ludlow Tennis Club and the United States Tennis Association.
He also was a board member of the Washington State Senior Games, a former member of the Chimacum School Board and a former chairman of the Jefferson County Fair.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Bill of West Jordan, Utah, Ted of Irvine, Calif., Chuck of Redmond, David of Port Ludlow and Brian of Renton; three brothers, Frank of Port Orchard, Stanley of Oroville and John of Eugene, Ore.; six sisters, Jane of Jamesville, N.Y., Ruth of Arlington, Jessie of Seaside, Ore., Iris of Seattle, Helen of Lafayette, Calif., and Joanne of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and 10 grandchildren, Ryan, Ashley, Courtney and Brett, all of Redmond, David of Irvine, Derek of West Jordan, Alex, Jennifer and Nick, all of Renton, and James of Port Ludlow. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Fred and Dick.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Community United Methodist Church in Port Hadlock.

Roy Peterson
Roy Leonard Peterson, 98, last original settler in the Eglon community, died March 23, 1999, at Martha & Mary Nursing Home.
He was born Nov. 2, 1900, in Great Falls, Mont., to Charles and Hannah (Anderson) Peterson. He moved to Eglon at age 2, and spent the majority of his life there.
Mr. Peterson worked as a machinist in Alaska canneries for many years.
He is survived by his sister, Elsie Brockman of Martha & Mary Nursing Home, Poulsbo.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Eglon Community Church. Interment
will be at Eglon cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Bert Weber
Bert William Weber, 86, of Poulsbo died March 19, 1999, at his home.
He was born July 7, 1912, in Seattle to William and Rose (Klotz) Weber. He was raised and educated in Cle Elum, graduating from Cle Elum High School as salutatorian in 1930. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1940, and later attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
On Oct. 18, 1983, he married
Sophia L. Boehler in Bremerton.
Mr. Weber served in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force. He was stationed in Germany, Korea and Boca Raton, Fla. He retired as a captain in 1946, but was called back to duty to serve in Korea. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He later worked as an electrical engineer at Keyport Torpedo Station for 26 years, retiring in 1970.
He was a member of the Brownsville United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Hildegard Stone of Bremerton; two brothers, Kingsley of Seattle and Byron of Troutdale, Ore.; and two grandchildren, Richard Stone of Bremerton and Mike Stone of Seattle.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brownsville United Methodist Church in Bremerton.

Gene Summerill
Gene A. Summerill, 62, of Port Orchard died March 20, 1999, at his home.
He was born Dec. 26, 1936, in Seattle. He was raised in Port Orchard and graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1956.
On June 10, 1983, he married
Dorothy in Seattle.
Mr. Summerill worked as a senior account agent for Allstate Insurance for more than 30 years.
He was a member of the Bremerton Yacht Club, the Bremerton Elks, the Selective Service draft board and the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Jeffrey of Belfair, Troy of Salem, Ore., and John Garding of Seattle; two daughters, Katherine Jacobs of Seattle and Geraldine Russell of Bellevue; one brother, Donald Empens of Port Angeles; two sisters, Joan Emmons of Enumclaw and Janice Empens of Eugene, Ore.; his stepfather, Ben Tompkins of Port Orchard; and eight grandchildren.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rill Chapel. Interment
will be at Sunset Lane cemetery.

George Coffman
George Ralph Coffman, 85, of Bremerton died March 20, 1999, at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
He was born May 20, 1913, in Seaside, Ore., to Levi and Harriet (Rawson) Coffman. He was raised in Seaside, graduating from high school in 1931.
On March 12, 1938, he married
Margaret (Boman) Coffman at the Lutheran Brotherhood in Bremerton.
Mr. Coffman served in the Navy from 1931 to 1952, serving in the Asian Pacific, in China and in the Japanese occupation. He retired as a chief machinist's mate. Following his naval retirement, he worked as a marine machinist for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1956 to 1978.
He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Kenneth of Bremerton; one daughter, Georgia Jeffries of Bremerton; seven grandchildren, Craig Peeler, Mark Jeffries, Mike Peeler, Jim Jeffries, Rodney Peeler, Treena Stanley and Rachael Coffman; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A military graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn cemetery with a memorial service following at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 11th and Veneta, Bremerton.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
