Doris Smith
Doris M. Smith, 60, of Bremerton died March 16, 1999, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born May 18, 1938, in Portland, Ore., to Kenneth and Bertha (Hansen) Smart. She was raised and educated in Kelso, graduating from Kelso High School in 1954. She obtained her nursing degree from Olympic College in 1973.
On June 1, 1957, she married
Alvin C. Smith Sr. in Tacoma. He preceded her in death in 1984.
Mrs. Smith worked for the past five years as an LPN at Harrison Hospital.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port Orchard.
Survivors include her mother, Bertha Burns of Longview; a daughter, Bonnie Catalano of Port Orchard; a brother, John Burns of Coquille, Ore.; and seven grandchildren, Chris and Tony Catalano, both of Port Orchard, Mary and Megan Smith, both of Bainbridge Island, and Jared, Jewell and Deven Lindsey, all of Port Orchard. She was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth in 1980 and Alvin Jr. in 1998.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. today at Rill Chapel. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Frank Taylor
Dr. Frank C. Taylor, 91, of Tahuya died Feb. 9, 1999, at his home on Hood Canal.
He was born Sept. 9, 1907, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Dr. Taylor served in the Navy as a pharmacist's mate aboard USS Texas. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1938 and established a medical practice in Bremerton in 1939. Following his retirement in 1967, he became a volunteer for Tahuya Fire District 8.
He was a member of the Kitsap Medical Society. He served a term as president and a term as chief of staff at Harrison Hospital. He also was a member of the American Medical Association. He was a Mason and a life member of Hood Canal Lodge 288.
He was preceded in death by two wives, Catherine "Kaye" Herlovic, whom he married
in 1930, and Yvonne Bergren Taylor, whom he married
in 1991. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. Taylor.
Survivors include two nephews, Derek Taylor of Los Gatos, Calif., and Allan Taylor of Lynnwood, and a niece, Nona Taylor of Seattle.
At his request, there were no services.
Wendell Smith
Wendell J. Smith, 78, of Port Orchard died March 14, 1999, at the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil.
He was born Sept. 6, 1920, in Champion, Neb., to Ray F. and Vinabelle (Browning) Smith. He was raised in Salem, Ore., and Bremerton.
On July 13, 1974, he married
Elaine M. Christian in Port Orchard.
He served in the Army Air Corps and then worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker for 21 years, retiring in 1965.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry of Seattle; four stepsons, Maurice Hoyt of Port Orchard, Raymond Hoyt of Olalla, Merrill Hoyt of Kamiah, Idaho, and Richard Hoyt of Port Orchard; a daughter, Peggy Stratton of Salem, Ore.; a stepdaughter, Donna Buckendorf of Pe Ell, Wash.; a brother, Robert of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Toby Smith of Portland, Ore.; 22 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be conducted.

Faye Monske
Faye M. Monske, 77, of Bremerton died March 6, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Jan. 29, 1922, in Wyandotte, Mich., to Carl R. and Mildred (Harrington) Caldwell.
Mrs. Monske was a homemaker and volunteered for Wyandotte General Hospital. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1136, the American Legion and the 41st Infantry Club.
Her husband, Walter H. Monske, preceded her in death in 1967. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Caldwell.
Survivors include three sons, Wade of New Mexico and Larry and Wes, both of Bremerton; a daughter, Dotty Heydorn of Henderson, Nev.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A private family service will be conducted.

Vanita Brooks
Vanita Mary Brooks, 38, of Poulsbo died March 14, 1999, in Poulsbo.
She was born Oct. 8, 1960, in Augsburg, Germany, to Lee and Elfriede (Wilhelm) Haines. She was raised in the Tacoma area, graduating from Tahoma High School, Tacoma Community College and the licensed practical nursing program at Clover Creek Vocational School.
On Nov. 10, 1979, she married
Ricki Lee Brooks at the Elk Plain Community Church in Spanaway.
Mrs. Brooks worked with the Village Missions and Youth for Christ in the Puget Sound area.
She was a member of the Elk Plain Community Church in Spanaway, Scandia Bible Church in Poulsbo and West Sound Community Church in Silverdale.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Matthew and Daniel; a daughter, Jessica C. Brooks of Poulsbo; two brothers, Wayne Haines of Virginia and Doug Peterson of Seattle; her father and stepmother, Lee and Edith Haines of Oregon; and her stepfather, Earl Peterson of Olympia. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1997.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Crossroads Neighborhood Church in Bremerton. Private family interment will be at Poulsbo City cemetery. Arrangements are by Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Donald Simson
Donald Gene Simson, 71, of Retsil died March 12, 1999, at the Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil.
He was born Nov. 12, 1927, in Norfolk, Neb., to Adelbert and Hazel (Wheeler) Simson. He was raised in Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1948. He later studied metallurgy at the engineering department of El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.
He was in the Navy from 1948 to 1952, serving aboard USS Prairie as a machinist. He was a machinist for more than 30 years, working for many companies in California including Douglas Aircraft Co. He retired from Sargent Industries in 1972 following an industrial accident.
Mr. Simson was a member of the American Society of Philatelists (stamp collectors) and the Medalist Association (ballroom dancing) of Los Angeles.
He is survived by his sister, Lucille Munson of Norfolk, Neb.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Michael Ranes
Michael Wesley Ranes, 41, of Bremerton died March 13, 1999, at his home.
He was born Nov. 25, 1957, in Toppenish, where he was raised. He graduated from Cascadia High School in Tacoma in 1974 and moved to Bremerton 14 years ago.
He worked as a geographic information specialist for several local tribes after completing an internship at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Denver, Colo.
Survivors include his wife, the former Neira Louise Schneider; his mother and stepfather, Jeanette and Robert Thompson of Bremerton; a son, Josh of Bremerton; a stepson, Chris Koplaski of Bremerton; three daughters, Tiera, Summer and Savannah, all of Bremerton; two brothers, James Hert of Bremerton and Tim Burkhardt of Port Orchard; and two sisters, Kathleen Hert of Port Orchard and Tammy Burkhardt of Denver.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. at the Olalla Grange. Cremation was by Cherry Grove Crematory.

Linda Celske
Linda Louise Celske, 43, of Dearborn Heights, Mich., died March 2, 1999, in Dearborn, Mich.
She was born Aug. 2, 1955, in Bremerton to James and Ruth (Petrie) Redman. She was raised in Bremerton, graduating from West High School in 1973.
On June 16, 1973, she married
John W. Celske Sr. in Bremerton.
Mrs. Celske was a homemaker and worked at a grocery store while attending the University of Michigan to obtain a degree in education.
Survivors include her husband; her parents of Bremerton; a son, John of North Carolina; a daughter, Shelly of Dearborn; a brother, Daniel Redman of Brattleboro, Vt.; a sister, Debra L. Johnson of Bremerton; and one grandchild, Todd Celske of North Carolina.
Interment was in Romulus, Mich.
Mervin Ford
Mervin D. Ford, 69, of Port Townsend died March 12, 1999, at his home.
He was born Nov. 10, 1929, in Wakeeney, Kan., where he later attended high school.
On Feb. 14, 1986, he married
Sue E. Caldwell in Seattle.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War. He later worked as a truck driver for Sears Home Delivery in Seattle, retiring in 1986.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Douglas of Sumner; three daughters, Karen Jones of Sumner, Colleen Rader of Everett and Teresa Clawson of Tacoma; three stepsons, Bruce and Eric Holmes, both of Renton, and Gregg Holmes of Federal Way; two stepdaughters, Kristi Covell of Tumwater and Dawna Grenell of Lake Stevens; and numerous grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be at noon Saturday at the family home, 2830 Holcomb St., Port Townsend.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
Omar Hill
Omar Calvin Hill, 82, of Port Orchard died March 8, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1916, in Creston, Mont. He was raised and educated in Kalispell, Mont., graduating from Flathead County High School.
He served in the Army from 1945 to 1946. Following his discharge from the Army, he moved to Bremerton, where he worked at the Bangor Naval Ammunition Depot and Bremerton Annex until retiring. He also worked at Peninsula Feed Store in Port Orchard.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; a daughter, Florence Avery; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
No service will be conducted.
