Daniel Henderson
Daniel Henderson, 82, of Retsil died March 8, 1999, at Washington State Veterans Home.
He was born Nov. 24, 1916, in Texas, to Chris A. and Cella (Rodrigues) Henderson.
On Dec. 26, 1947, he married
Paula Mussett in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Mr. Henderson served in the Navy from 1940 to 1960, serving on aircraft carriers in both the Atlantic and Pacific. He was awarded five Good Conduct medals and the National Defense Ribbon. He retired as an aviation mechanic jet chief. He then worked for Bellingham Transit until retiring.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve Association.
Survivors include his wife; a foster daughter and son, Yvonne and H.L. Wilder, both of Poulsbo; and a sister, Betty Henderson.
A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Washington State Veterans Home in Retsil.

Charlotte Abundis
Former Bremerton resident Charlotte Jean Abundis, 70, died March 7, 1999, at the Twin Falls Clinic and Hospital in Idaho.
She was born Sept. 21, 1928, in Delta, Colo., to David J. and Myrtle (Denny) Lopez. She was raised in the Magic Valley of southern Idaho and attended schools in Jerome, Idaho.
On Dec. 15, 1945, she married
Raymond Abundis in Jerome. They moved to Bremerton in 1979, then returned to Idaho in 1986.
Survivors include her husband, four sons, seven daughters, two sisters, 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons.
A funeral Mass was celebrated March 11 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Twin Falls. Interment
was at Twin Falls cemetery.

Mike Matsumoto
Masaji "Mike" Matsumoto, 86, of Kingston died March 13, 1999, at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Honolulu and was raised in Hawaii. He joined the Department of Defense as a civil servant in 1942 and retired after 30 years.
An active Mason, he played a key role in the re-establishment of Masonary in Japan following World War II. He was Past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Japan in 1967-68.
Locally, he was a member of Franklin Lodge No. 5 in Port Gamble for more than 20 years and was made an honorary member of that lodge in 1989. He later joined Silverdale Lodge No. 311 as a charter member.
He also was affiliated with the Scottish Rite, the Afifi Shrine and was past patron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 6 of Misawa, Japan.
He married
Fumiko "Helen" Osawa, and a son, Neil Matsumoto, was born to them. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son and his second wife, the former Shimeko Kuwanna of Misawa, whom he married
in 1966.
Masonic services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Masonic Lodge on Bainbridge Island, 1299 Grow Ave.
Lela Atkins
Former Kitsap County resident Lela Mae Atkins, 73, died March 5, 1999, in Manhattan, Kan.
She was born Feb. 3, 1926, in Ozark, Mo., to Audie and Florence (Sampson) Harvill. She was raised in Missouri, moving to California while young.
She was married
to Douglas Shaw from 1945 to 1956. On Dec. 11, 1957, she married
Turner Atkins. He preceded her in death on March 8, 1988.
Mrs. Atkins worked as a welder in the California shipyards during World War II, coming to Bremerton in 1951. She also worked as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and was a homemaker.
She was an active member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include three sons, Rodney Shaw of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Terry and David Atkins, both of Olalla; two daughters, Cathy Shaw of Manhattan, Kan., and Ramona Lawson of Bremerton; two brothers, Fred Harvill of Bremerton and Leonard Harvill of Prosser, Wash.; four sisters, Ruth Cummings of Bremerton, Linda Treml and Anna Masterson, both of Florida, and Mary Reyna of California; 13 grandchildren, Mike and Jonathan Shaw, Erin, Josh, Brooke, Jessica and Noah Hensley, Nolan, Thea and Maevis Lawson, Josh and Jenny Atkins and Rebecca; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, also at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Interment
will be at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Peter Schwindt
Peter Schwindt, 94, of Bremerton died of natural causes March 9, 1999, at Naval Hospital in Bremerton.
He was born April 14, 1904, in Argentina to Joseph and Anna (Schell) Schwindt. He was raised in Scio, Ore. He was self-educated, and took a two-year correspondence course to become an electrician.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Merla Schwindt in 1988, after 31 years of marriage. On Jan. 27, 1990, he married
his second wife, Virginialee Palmer in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1998.
Mr. Schwindt served in the Navy from 1927 to 1958, earning 17 medals and ribbons, serving in World War II. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He worked as an electrician at Washington Veterans Home in Retsil for 10 years, retiring in 1970.
He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and a member of both The Retired Officers Association and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include four brothers, Joseph, Louis, Fred and Clarence, all of Oregon; three grandchildren, Doug and Dale Erstad and Merlaine Dailey; seven great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a stepdaughter, two brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 700 Callahan Drive, Bremerton.

Ethel Walker
Ethel Alexandra (Cole) Walker, 72, of Port Orchard died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease March 5, 1999, at home.
She was born Feb. 18, 1927, in Water Viliet, N.Y., to Elmer Cole and Ethel Murphy. She was raised and educated in New York.
On Nov. 24, 1945, she married
Paul P. Walker Sr. in Paterson, N.J.
Mrs. Walker worked as a title clerk in El Paso, Texas, and was also a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Steve of Bremerton and Paul Jr. of Kansas City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Stephanie and Rachel, both of Bremerton, Shelley, Amy and Ryan, all of California, and Christopher of North Dakota; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lenore.
A service was conducted at the family residence on March 7, 1999.
Inurnment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park.

Paula Braverman
Paula (Richardson) Braverman, 50, died after a lengthy struggle with breast cancer Feb. 12, 1999, at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif.
She was born March 19, 1948, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton to Norman and Janice Richardson. After graduation from East High School, she attended Pomona College at Claremont in Southern California.
On June 15, 1969, she married
Barry Braverman in Big Sur, Calif. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and taught school in Ukiah. She completed course work at the University of California at Los Angeles for a master's degree in architecture and worked at the profession until leaving to raise her family.
Survivors include her husband; her mother; a son, Benjamin Braverman; a daughter, Lily, of the family home in Altadena; her brother, Mark Richardson of Clarkston; and her sister, Carol Stewart of Seattle.
A memorial ceremony was conducted at the Rose Pavilion of Descanso Gardens in La Canada, Calif.

David Soyat
David Soyat, 77, of Manchester died of cancer on March 10.
He was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Sedro Wooley, Wash., to Anthony and Victoria (Starcevich) Soyat. He moved to Manchester as a child, graduating from South Kitsap High School in 1939. In 1949, he graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor's degree in business and economics.
Mr. Soyat served in the Navy as an aviator. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired as a commander in 1969 after 27 years of service.
He was a member of the University of Washington Alumni Association and the Retired Navy Officers Association.
On Sept. 5, 1952, he married
Irene Soyat in Bremerton. She preceded him in death in 1986.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey of Duvall and Dana of Port Orchard; a daughter, Lisa Clark of Manchester; two stepdaughters, Rita Gardner of Newbury, England, and Ingrid Lynch of Redmond; a brother, Mark of Port Orchard; two sisters, Mary of Tacoma and Toni Allen of Bellingham; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No service will be conducted. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Clifford Youngberg
Clifford H. Youngberg, 86, died March 10, 1999.
He was born Feb. 9, 1913, in Seattle. He lived in Bremerton most of his life.
Mr. Youngberg was a partner in Cliff and Gene's Food Center in Bremerton.
Survivors include two sisters, Florence Rasmussen and Lillian Leonard, and his longtime companion, Dee Lowe. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Rupert, in 1996.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bonney-Watson, Washington Memorial, 16445 Pacific Hwy. S, SeaTac.
Kenneth Knisely
Kenneth G. Knisely, 85, of Kenmore died in his sleep March 2, 1999, at his son's home on Lake Washington.
He was born June 12, 1913, in Brookville, Pa., to Mervin and Ora (Ishman) Knisely. He was raised in Cool Springs, Pa.
In 1953, he married
Melba I. Stokes. She preceded him in death in 1980.
Mr. Knisely served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 in the Normandy campaign of World War II. He received three Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
He worked at Lamb Grays Harbor, Hoquiam, from 1955 to 1958. He went on to work in Machinist Shop 73 at Keyport Naval Torpedo Station at Keyport for 25 years, retiring in 1974.
He was a member of the Elks and of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son, Paul; a daughter, Ora Tanner of Orrville, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Finesse of Bremerton, Misty of Spokane and Amber Lee of Orrville. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bud and James; and a sister, Luella.
A memorial service will be Sunday morning at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 11th Street and Veneta Avenue. Bremerton.
