Thelma Samples
Thelma E. Samples, 80, of Bremerton died April 20, 1999, at Northwoods Lodge.
She was born April 6, 1919, in Hannibal County, Mo., to Cicero and Hazel (Holbrook) Farrens.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Norman of California, Ronald Waln of Oklahoma and James Waln of Louisiana; two daughters, Carol Brame of Washington and Rosa Lee Pierce of Texas; three brothers, Kenneth of Oregon, Bert of Colorado and Eldon of Idaho; two sisters, Bonnie Hinkle of California and Ruby Rosenhamer of Oklahoma; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samual Samples.
A memorial service for family and friends will be at 3 p.m. today at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood.
Freda Jones
Freda Jones, 87, of Bremerton died April 20, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
She was born Jan. 26, 1912, in Victoria, British Columbia. She attended high school in Seattle.
On Nov. 22, 1958, she married
Robert Jones. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jones was a homemaker.
Survivors include six grandchildren, Craig Connell of Port Orchard, Le-Ann Freese of Bremerton and Marla, Steve, Kary and Michael West, all of California; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Bernadene Bowman Connell and Marlene Thornton West.
Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, with a graveside service immediately following at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Frank Treese
Frank O. Treese, 80, of Port Orchard died April 20, 1999, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born June 27, 1918, in Okmulgee, Okla. In 1920, he moved to Washington with his family and was raised in Mount Vernon, where he graduated from high school in 1937.
On March 28, 1940, he married
Ellie Harang. They made their home in Skagit County before moving to Port Orchard in 1976.
Mr. Treese was a painter by trade, working at both Northern State and Western State hospitals before retiring in 1981. He served as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years with the city of Burlington and later with South Kitsap Fire District 7.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Frank Jr. of Port Orchard; two daughters, Gilly Mich of Paris, France, and Barbara Baar of Olympia; a sister, Mary Stollas of Olympia; and six grandchildren.
Private services and cremation were conducted under the direction of Tuell McKee Funeral Home.
Ruth Anderson
Former Bremerton resident Ruth S. Anderson, 78, died after a lengthy illness April 21, 1999, at Integrated Health Services of Derry, N.H.
She was born April 22, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Anna (Peterson) and Louis Schade Jr. She was a resident of Derry for the past 12 years.
Mrs. Anderson had been active in Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church and the Second Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, N.Y.
She is survived by three sons, Hayden of Dracut, Mass., Thomas Antioch of California and Gregg of Clifton Park, N.Y.; a daughter, Amy Shives of Spokane; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Anderson, in 1984.
Interment will be at Fairview cemetery in Westfield, N.J.
Arrangements are under the direction of Peabody Funeral Home.

Helen Crouch
Helen Mae Crouch, 83, a longtime resident of the Bremerton area, died April 21, 1999.
She was raised in Snohomish, where she met her husband of 64 years, Leonard S. Crouch.
Mrs. Crouch was a receptionist for a physician's office and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Roger and Dennis; three brothers, Theodore, Victor and Howard Mathison; a sister, Anna Kinch; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
No formal services are planned at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Inurnment will be at Haven of Rest Memorial Park.
Jean Thoren
Jean Charlotte Thoren, 86, of Bremerton died April 21, 1999.
She was born Dec. 19, 1912, in Armington, Mont., to Charles and Lena (Randall) Gallagher. She was raised in Great Falls, Mont., graduating from Great Falls High School in 1930. She later graduated from Great Falls College of Education.
On Sept. 9, 1939, she married
William V. Thoren in Great Falls. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Thoren worked for the U.S. Census Bureau.
She was active in the Audubon Society, the garden club of Yakima and various other gardening clubs.
Survivors include two sons, William of Bremerton and John of Saint Albans, Vt.; a sister, Barbara Kleiv of Valparaiso, Fla.; four grandchildren, Sher Isenberg of Everett, Molly Wuller of Nashville, Tenn., Kimberly Thoren of Venice, Fla., and Matthew Thoren of Saint Albans; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Donald and Daniel.
Rosary recitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with services following at 10 a.m., both at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at Calvary cemetery in Yakima.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Earl Haner
Earl Melville Haner, 86, of Tracyton died April 17, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in Seattle.
He was born Feb. 12, 1913, in Elma, Wash., to John and Elizabeth (Hattabaugh) Haner. He graduated from Odessa High School in 1931.
On Jan. 18, 1946, he married
Harriet Moore in Eugene, Ore.
Mr. Haner served in the Army as a technical sergeant from 1942 to 1945. He later worked as a metalsmith at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1967.
He was a member of the Bremerton Fiddlers, the American Legion Post 149 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Lewis Funeral Chapel. Interment
will be at Ivy Green cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Beatrice Lockhart
Beatrice Ethel Lockhart, 91, of Bremerton died April 18, 1999, at Crista Shores in Silverdale.
She was born Oct. 22, 1907, in Winthrop, Wash., to Daniel and Lulu (Hawkins) LaRue. She was raised and educated in Winthrop, residing there until 1942.
In 1929, she married
James L. Englar in Winthrop. He preceded her in death in 1952. In 1963, she married
Charles Lockhart. He preceded her in death in 1982.
Survivors include two sons, Vic Englar of Bremerton and Orville Englar of Cle Elum; a daughter, Betty Bowers of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Jack of Carmichael, Calif.; a sister, Mayme Montgomery of Federal Way; three grandchildren, Douglas and Ron Bowers, and Ray Englar; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside inurnment service will be conducted in August in Winthrop, as part of a family reunion.
Cremation is by Cherry Grove Crematory, with arrangements by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
Myra Madden
Myra Elizabeth Madden, 90, of Bremerton died of pneumonia April 17, 1999, at her home.
She was born Feb. 5, 1909, in Auburn to Theodore and Jessie (Wing) Golden. She was raised in Auburn and Bremerton. She graduated from Union High School in 1927.
On April 30, 1932, she married
Myron Arnold Madden at First Methodist Church in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Madden worked with the Kitsap County court, for the city of Bremerton library from 1927 to 1947, for Kitsap Dairy as a bookkeeper from 1955 to 1959 and most recently as a branch librarian at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 14 years, retiring in 1979.
She was a 50-year member of Reliance Chapter 70 of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the Bremerton Yacht Club, the Skipperettes, the Bremerton Community Concerts Association, Harrison Hospital Auxiliary and Chapter 181 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church for most of her life.
Survivors include two sons, Myron "Gene" of Bremerton and James "Ted" of Gig Harbor; a daughter, Myra Jo Redlack of Bremerton; five grandchildren, Robert Miller of Bremerton, Brian Miller of Modesto, Calif., Mindy Milbourn of Lakebay, Wendy Madden of Gig Harbor and Kristi Adkinson of Port Orchard; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine K. Dillon, in 1992.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. May 7 at First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Adeline Etten
Adeline "Addie" J. Etten, 100, of Bremerton died of natural causes April 21, 1999, at Bremerton Convalescent Center.
She was born Dec. 29, 1898, in Santa Maria, Calif., to Tom and Frances (Turpin) Rice. She was raised in Santa Maria, and attended business college.
On Aug. 4, 1920, she married
Oscar A. Etten in Kitsap County. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Etten worked as a crane operator at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard around 1917.
She was a member of Manette Community Church.
Survivors include a son, Roy of Crista Shores in Silverdale; a daughter, June Jarstad of Bremerton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Keith; two brothers; and one sister.
A memorial for family and friends will be at 1 p.m. May 8 at the Manette Community Church.
