WILLIAM ALLEN, JR.
William Allen, Jr. (Bill), 79 of Camano Island, born July 17, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois to William and Catherine Allen. A geophysical engineer and graduate of Colorado School of Mines, he was involved with copper mining exploration in Arizona and California. He trained in oceanography at Scripps Institute in San Diego, CA. Bill worked at the Boeing Company for many years in marine systems with hydrofoils. He served for many years in the Washington State Guard. Bill was preceded in died Sun., Aug. 10, 2003 following an extended illness. She was married Gregory G. John in May of 1944.
Vaundie then worked in the insurance industry in Seattle and Portland, putting her husband through college and medical school. She is survived by her husband Gregory, two sons Gregory M. John, and Steven A. John; one grandchild Scott John; one brother Ted and sister Dorothy. At her request private family services will be held. Memorials may be made Skagit Valley Hospital Cancer Clinic. Arrangement under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
THOMAS E. IMEL
Thomas E. Imel was died Aug. 3, 2003. He was the loving husband to Wanda, father to Kelli, Mike and Jim, and grandfather to Patrick and Alyssa. Thomas was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force. He proudly served his country for 22 1/2 years and retired in 1978. After being retired from the USAF he served as a health care administrator for 10 years. Thomas went on to work for the Seattle-based company Immunex when he again retired in 1999. Thomas enjoyed life at his Camano Island home with his wife Wanda of 18 years.
Thomas is survived by his wife Wanda, his three children, two grandchildren and brother Richard of Camano Island and brother Les of Santa Barbara, CA. Services were held at Tahoma National born in Stanwood, WA Dec. 14, 1907 and passed away in 1957. He contributed much to the historical society of Stanwood with writings of past history before and after the turn of the 20th century.
He graduated from Stanwood High School in 1924 at 15, then attended Culver Military Academy in Culver, IN for two years. He then went to the University of Washington and the University of Washington Law School. He graduated law school in June of 1932 and the next day married 63 years. Bob opened a small law practice in Stanwood in September 1933. He was often paid with a chicken, some beans or other produce. Later that year, he was offered a commission in the Civilian Conservation Corp., with which he served in Washington and northern California.
In 1940 he was called to active duty with the United States Army. He was one of the members of the war room who planned the invasion of Europe and was on the Chief of Staff (Command) of the European Theater with Generals Eisenhower, Mark Clark and others. He was eventually sent overseas to North Africa. Later he was sent to Caserta, Italy. He could see the ships being bombed in the Bay of Naples from his office window.
Later, he was put in charge of the rest camps for Northern Italy and Switzerland. It was during this time that he was knighted by King Umberto of Italy. He returned home in December of 1945. He had been gone over three years.
After the war, Bob spent a short time in California as a salesman for IBM. He did not have the personality to be a salesman, and in 1948, returned to Seattle where he joined Washington Title Company. The next year he was sent to Everett as assistant manager and then to Spokane as the manager of that office. He later worked in the law department in the main office in Seattle. He eventually was promoted to vice president and head counsel for the seven northwestern states.
He is survived by his daughter, Hellon Stewart (Lawrence) of San Gabriel, CA and his son Quentin Kirk (Rosemary Caya) of Spokane, with whom he was living at the time of his Cemetery, Stanwood. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood, WA.
KATRINA ANN TRAEGER RAINS
Katrina Ann Traeger Rains, 23, born Jan. 15, 1980 to parents John and Dianna Traeger in Mount Vernon, where she attended schools and was employed at local businesses.
Katrina was born Summer Lee Rains and Cameron Levi Rains. Besides her husband and children, Katrina is survived by her parents John and Dianne Traeger, her sister Katherine Traeger all of Mount Vernon; maternal grandmother Agnes Molstad of Stanwood, grandparents William and Sylvia Hackworth of Camano Island and Russ and Shirley Whicomb of Kentucky; father-in-law and mother-in-law Steve and Denise Rains of Burlington, mother-in-law Wanda Rains of Stanwood; uncles Dale and Leo Traeger and aunt Shirley Traeger all of Tacoma; aunt Doris Danielson of Stanwood, uncle and aunt Larry and Billie Sue (Bo) Carey of Camano Island; brother-in-law James Rains and family of Colville, Washington besides many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Memorials may be made to Katrina Rains Benefit Fund at any Peoples Bank or the American Cancer Society. Service were held Sat., Aug. 9, 2003 at Freeborn Lutheran Church, Stanwood, WA. BARBARA P. JOHNSON
Barbara P. Johnson born to appreciate the little joys in life. Her family recalled some of her passions: taking long walks with family and friends; combing beaches for agates; making countless batches of chocolate chip cookies; visits in her kitchen; picking berries; visiting fresh produce markets; admiring Mt. Baker and sunsets; holding hands; tickling her children’s backs; participating in mass with her St. Cecelia family; celebrating family birthdays and holidays.
Barbara's faith was an integral part of her life. She beautifully expressed her spirituality through a simple, quiet, faithful life. Barbara is survived by her husband of 39 years, Dave, of Camano Island, and children: David (Gail) and grandchildren, Brittany, David, Emily Rose and Matthew, of Monroe; Darcy (T.J.) Cosgrove and grandchildren, Teddy and Aliza Jane, of Seattle; Dean of Camano and Phil of Seattle; sisters: Sue (Atila) Cetincelik of Seattle; Jane (Bob) Larson, New Zealand; Mimi (Craig) French of Santa Cruz; Mary Denise (Kevin) Murphy of Salinas; brother Bob Ashmun of Seattle plus five nephews and five nieces.
married in 1963, lived in Mount Vernon from 1968 to 1971, and then in Medina until 1975 when she came to Camano Island. A member of the Stanwood-Camano community from 1975-2003, Barbara will be greatly missed.

GUS WAIDMANN
Gus Waidmann was passed away July 26, 2003. He was raised on Queen Anne Hill, where his parents owned and operated Standard Bakery. After serving as a radio operator in WWII, he came home, met and death by his parents, Gustav, Sr. and Pauline Waidmann; and his wife, Lois. He is survived by his wife, Marlene; his daughter, Gail; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. At his request, there will be no services.

JUNE D. NIES
June D. Nies, 74, a resident of Mount Vernon, born June 23, 1929 in Everett, to Abel and Edna Fleck Johnson. June attended Cedardale School and also Milltown School for a short time, then to Conway School as a fourth grader, the year it opened in 1938. She went on to Mount Vernon High School with the class of '47.
June had attended a little Cedardale Sunday school before going on to Emmanual Baptist, when the church on Cleveland St. was finished. She was baptized at age 12. June passed away from a lengthy battle with cancer at age 55. June and Red raised their family in Stanwood and were active at Cedarhome Baptist Church. The family enjoyed camping trips and also spent time at Lake Cavanaugh with her brother and his family and parents.
In 1980, she bought into Lake Conner Park alongside her son, Gary and family, and spent a lot of fun times around the campfire. While in Stanwood, she worked at the "Book Nook, " a Christian bookstore owned by her aunt. She also managed Thrifty Mart Drugs and managed the Parklane Apartments before moving back to Mount Vernon in 1997. After a short time, she worked part-time at City Bakery, where the crew became her extended family and helped her through her rough times through her cancer treatments.
While in Mount Vernon, she became a member of Skagit Widowed Support Services and also a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. June was an avid reader, especially anything pertaining to Alaska and the Yukon Territory. She took three trips to Alaska in the '90s with some special friends. She loved her Bible study groups, cooking and baking, going to antique shops, and collecting "Dickens Village" figurines. But most of all, she loved her family and friends.
June is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Gordy and Kay Achurra Nies and Gregg and Ema Nies, all of Arlington; a daughter-in-law, Sue Caldwell Nies of Seattle; grandchildren Brenna Nies of Lopez Island, Dory Nies of Olympia, Scott Nies of Seattle, Trevor and Kathryn Nies of Issaquah, Stacy Nies and Anthony Ottman of Snohomish, Jessica and Casey Nies of Arlington, David Valiant of Olympia, Shawn Caldwell, Barb Caldwell Chaney, Katie Achurra, all of Seattle; brother, Lawrence "Larry" Johnson of Mount Vernon and his children, Brian and Carol Johnson of Anacortes, Kerry and Winston Jones, Kim Johnson and Colleen Johnson, all of Mount Vernon; two special aunts, Hilma Robertson of Mount Vernon and Gloria Fleck of Soap Lake; and many cousins, special friends and extended family.
She was preceded in Cemetery, followed by memorial services at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, with Pastor Bob Weltz officiating, was Mon., July 28. Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home, Mount Vernon.
VIRGINIA E. McBEE
Virginia E. McBee, 96, of Stanwood, born Feb. 22, 1907, in Penzance, Cornwall, England, the first daughter of J.T. Edwards and wife Imogen. The family immigrated to Canada and then the United States, settling in Atascadero, CA, where she attended school. Virginia went on to attend business school in L.A.
She met and death in Santa Maria, CA, she moved to the Warm Beach Senior Community near Stanwood, where she has live for the past six years. She was a member of the Arlington Assembly of God Church. Virginia's enjoyments in life were writing, poetry, classical music and antiques. Virginia will be missed for her happy personality that made people feel good.
She is survived by daughter, Carol Nemchick and husband John of Stanwood; granddaughter, Kimberely Lovell and husband Mark; grandson, Dennis Scott of Seattle; sisters, Felicity Scheel of Laguna Beach, CA, and Eleanor Nicholson of Palos Verdes, CA; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m., Wed., July 30, at Arlington Assembly of God Church, Arlington, WA. Private family burial will be held in Valley View born to John and Sara Hendrickson in Tacoma, WA. She attended Tacoma public schools, graduating from Lincoln High in 1935. She received a B.A. from WSU in home economics in 1940. She worked in New York City for one year at a school for disabled children. She then became food service director for Everett public schools. She was passed away July 21, 2003, at the age of 78. Wendell, a resident of Stanwood for the past 13 years, was a retired architect and member of the AIA. He was a principal in the Bellevue firm of Beckwith/Spangler Architects for many years. Wendell was very involved in the Free Methodist Church in local congregations in Bellevue and Mount Vernon. He was on many state conference and national boards with the Free Methodist Church. Wendell traveled extensively for the mission board of the church doing consulting and designing for many mission locations around the world. His firm was also the architect for much of the work done at Warm Beach Camp. He is survived by his wife, June, of 53 years; brother, Gilbert Beckwith, Stanwood; sisters, Mildred Harless, Aberdeen, and Ruby Koenig, Portland; sons, Don Beckwith, Stanwood, Rod Beckwith, Sammamish, Dennis Beckwith, Glendora, CA, and Jon Beckwith, Pasadena, CA; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service was held 1 p.m., Mon., July 28 at Warm Beach Camp, Stanwood.
