PHYLLIS V. GRATIAS
Phyllis Viola Gratias, born May 28, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully Nov. 27, 2003 at the age of 93 at Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood.

She was the youngest of 11 children, death by her daughter, Macie Nunns. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanette Hoag of Edmonds; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be held in Salt Lake City, UT in the spring. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.

JUDITH M. MCKEAN
Judith Marie McKean, a resident of the Stanwood area for 65 years, Cemetery. A celebration of life service will be announced later.

The McKeans operated a dairy farm two miles north of Stanwood and raised peas as a cash crop. When her husband death.

Mrs. McKean was married Felix in Seattle Sept. 25, 1934.

Survivors include five sons and their wives: Dale F. and Penny of Hillsboro, OR, Gary L. and Irmgard of Kennewick, WA, Terry G. and Joan of Stanwood, Wayne L. and Chris of Kenmore, WA, and Michael C. and Julie of Vacaville, CA; 12 grandchildren: Keith McKean of Portland, OR, Shannon McKean of Gresham, OR, Michelle Edwards of Hillsboro, OR, Jodi McKean of Sherwood, OR,

Bruce McKean of Gig Harbor, WA, Tanya Morales of Spokane, Jeff McKean of Port Townsend, Melissa Carpenter of Sedro-Woolley, Holly Beckstead of Tacoma, Laury McKean of Seattle and Timothy and Diana McKean of Vacaville, CA; and 14 great-grandchildren.

The family asks that any donations go to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church or Josephine Sunset Home, in Stanwood. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.

ELIZABETH J. GLASS
Elizabeth Jean Glass, beloved daughter of Kim and Joanne Glass, sister of Henry Glass, Born June 20, 1988, in Seattle, Betsy spent all but the first year of her life in Stanwood. She was an honor student at Stanwood High School and was awarded a place in Who's Who Among American High School Students the year, 2002-2003. She was an enthusiastic horsewoman. She enjoyed cooking, writing and buying her friends birthday presents. What we will miss most about Betsy is her unbounded capacity to love others and the joy with which she embraced this life.

Betsy leaves behind her father, Kim Glass; her mother, Joanne Glass; her brother, Henry Glass; her grandmother, Jeanette Bodilly; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. An open house gathering of friends and family celebrating Betsy's life will be held Sat., Dec. 13, 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Glass residence in Stanwood.

ELMER W. FIEDLER
Elmer W. Fiedler born March 22, 1917, near Irene, SD to Adolph and Laura Fiedler. In 1935, Elmer moved to Stanwood, where he lived the rest of his life.

Elmer began his working career at Twin City Foods, in Stanwood. He left Twin City during World War II, joining the Army, where he served with the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Presidential Citation. Following his return from military service, Elmer returned to Twin City Foods, where he retired in 1983.

Elmer was preceded in died Thurs., Nov. 27, 2003. He was married Michiko Nishimoto Jan. 10, 1958. The two enjoyed 45 years of marriage.

In 1981, he retired from the Navy as a master chief. He enjoyed living on Camano Island and being part of the community, serving as head of the Camano Sunrise Community. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, reading, and especially, working on reunions for the ship and crew he served with as a member of the Tortuga 26/46 Association. Joseph and Michiko traveled extensively all over the world in their retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Michiko of Camano Island; son and daughter-in-law, Tsuneto and Rebecca Lee of Arlington; grandchildren, Cameron and Karissa Lee; and two brothers, Daniel and Charles Lee. He was preceded in Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.

OSCAR A. SCHEI
Oscar A. Schei, 89, of Stanwood born Dec. 31, 1913 in Elk Point, SD and moved with his two sisters to the Victoria community in 1916. He attended Victoria School through the 5th grade and then Lincoln School.

After attending school, he worked with his father for English Logging Co. In 1931, he started working every summer for Olaf Floe at the Northwest Herring Co. in Alaska and winters in the lumber industry. In the late 40's through the 50's he owned and operated a fleet of milk trucks -- which picked up milk from the farmers in the Stanwood/Arlington area and delivered to the Darigold plant in Mount Vernon -- while also running and operating his own dairy farm. In the 60's until he retired, he also worked for Pilchuck Tree Farm and Victoria Ranch.

Oscar passed away in 1983. Oscar resided at his homeplace until three years ago, when he moved to Mountain Glen Retirement Home in Mount Vernon. He was preceded in Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Freeborn Lutheran died peacefully at home on Camano Island, Nov. 17, 2003. He was born in Coupeville, Aug. 13, 1911, to David Edgar And Carrie Zelma (Smith) Byrd. He graduated from Coupeville High School, where he particularly enjoyed participating in sports and impressing his classmates with his ability to hand walk great distances.

Having graduated right at the beginning of the Great Depression, times were tough and jobs were scarce. With a loan from his sister, he was able to go to Wrangell, AK to work at the Wrangell Print Shop. He worked as a printer in many shops all along the west coast, from Juneau to Los Angeles, CA. In particular, he spent many years working at Renton Rainier Printery for Dorothy and Ernie Farrar. Their families remained lifelong friends. In retirement, Bill loved to be on or near the waters of Puget Sound,
fishing, crabbing and shrimping. He spent many years at Potlatch on Hood Canal. Several years after both Dorothy and Bill lost their spouses, they renewed their friendship and were married in 1991. They were blessed with 10 years together. At Warm Beach, Bill found a large and loving extended family, community and church. Bill will be remembered for his sweet smile and his loving devotion in caring for Dorothy. Bill is survived by his sister, Irene; his four children, Donna, David, Robert and Myra; his stepdaughter, Arlyne, who lovingly cared for Bill during the last two years of his life and made it possible for him to remain in his home.

Our family would like to extend our thankfulness for the steadfast kindness of our caring neighbors, especially Lavon Black and granddaughter, Erin Nguyen. A memorial service will be held in Bill’s honor at St. Aiden’s Episcopal Church Fri., Nov. 28, 1 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Warm Beach Community Association.
