SHIRLEY J. FRIEDRICH
Shirley Joan Friedrich, a child of God, was born Dec. 12, 1928, in Copeland, KS. She passed away Nov. 20 surrounded by his beloved and loving family. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara; daughter, Jana and son-in-law Tom Shaughnessy; sons, Robert and Jim; granddaughter, Kelley and husband Henry Schwab; grandson, Ryan Shaughnessy and girlfiiend Dannial Aschenbrenner; and his precious great-granddaughter, Josie Schwab; brothers, Billy (Marie) and Wayne (Delores) Glenn; and extended family, Don and Carol Rohan, Mike and Carolyn Mc Chesney. Al also leaves many caring friends in Camaloch, Desert Center and Canada.
Special thanks to Don Winter, Pat Getty and Don Einarsen for giving their time when needed. Also special thanks to Providence Hospice of Snohomish County for their compassionate care. Else Hassel passed over on Sun., Nov. 9, 2003. She was passed away Mon., Nov. 17, 2003, at Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee.

OBERLIN E. ARNOLD
Oberlin Ellis Arnold was born in Wales, England in 1585, arrived in America in 1634. His first home was in Cambridge, CT. The descendants became known as the "Connecticut Aronlds" to distinguish them from the "Rhode Island Arnolds, " to which Benedict Arnold belonged.
Ellis's father, Don Poe Arnold, married Ruth Adelaide Ellis. Following graduation in 1908, he entered the ministry of the Free Methodist Church.
Ellis, of the ninth generation, attended elementary schools in Ar-kansas, Missouri and Washington. At the age of nine, he knelt at an altar in a Baptist church to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior, whom he followed faithfully. He attended Seattle Pacific High School and College graduating in 1933, with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
From 1933 through 1947, he was employed by the United States Department of Indian Affairs, serv-ing in Alaskan schools and com-munities as teacher and Indian agent. In 1934, at the age of 25, he death in 1982.
In 1984, at the age of 75, he death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; and his brother, William Liston Arnold.
Surviving him are his wife, Ramona of Warm Beach; his sister, Elisabeth (Will) Quaale of Carna-tion, WA; nieces, Marlene (Stan) Wainscott of Duvall, WA, and Jeanie (Larry) Major of Port Or-chard, WA; nephew, Dwight (Sharon) Quaale of Carnation, WA; nieces, Jo Macy (Chet) Lewis, Jr. of Redmond, WA, Phyllis Macy (Jim) Sortor of Vashon, WA, Laura Macy (Jon) Noble of Redmond, WA; and 15 great nieces and nephews. Inurnment at the Anderson born in Seattle, March 26, 1918, to Alfred Johnson and Josephine Johnson. He death by his wife Ruth; sister, Virginia Isaacson, and husband, Lloyd; brothers, Al and Raymond. He leaves sisters, Elise Luff of Coeur D Alene, ID, Dorothy Maryatt of Camarillo, CA; brother, Mil-ton Johnson, Freeland, WA; step-children, Jim Bailey, Fred Bailey and Donna McCann; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob became a victim of polio when he was a young lad but over-came its difficulties by leading and living a full life. He retired after many years with Alaska Communications System. Bob lived on Camano Island for almost 30 years, and had many friends there who will really miss him. A memorial to his life will be held at Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood, 2 p.m., Sat., Nov. 29. In lieu of flowers, donations may go to charity of choice. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home.
RUTH E. JOHNSTON
Ruth Ellis Johnston left this world to be with the Lord Nov. 10. She was married Leonard B. Johnston, settling in Lake City, where they raised their three children. Ruth loved to sing both at home and with a group, singing with the Roosevelt High School A Cappella Choir and the Oriana Chorus. She was a Brownie and Girt Scout leader for many years. She worked in the Lake City Grade School lunchroom, later becoming their head baker. Most recently, Ruth was a member of the Josephine Sunset Home Drill Team and was honored as the JSH Resident of the Month for June, 2003. She was preceded in passed away Nov. 8, 2003, at the Josephine Sunset Home, in Stanwood. He was married to Elizabeth Lawson Dec. 1, 1931.
Garvik served his country in the ROTC, and from 1943 to 1946, served overseas in North Africa, France, and Germany during WWII. Garvik has resided on his farm near Stanwood, where he has farmed and raised an award-winning Ayrshire herd. He retired in 1994 from farming and has resided at Josephine Sunset Home since 1998. Mourning his death by his wife Elizabeth in 2001. Funeral services were held 1 p.m., Sat., Nov. 15, at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood. Conclud-ing services in Our Saviour’s Lu-theran Church passed away peacefully Thurs., Nov. 6, 2003. She was preceded in died in June of 2002. She was born to Carl and Vera Backstrom. She had three brothers, Gene and Lois Backstrom (Sedro-Woolley), Byron and Robinette Backstrom (Everett), Bob (deceased) and Phyllis Backstrom (Sedro-Woolley).
She leaves three sons and their families: Barry Wilson (Camano Island), Richard and Karen Wilson (Camano Island), and David and Debbie Wilson (Everett); she also leaves nine grandchildren; along with numerous great-grandchildren. Gwen also leaves Don Paige, David and Carol Paige, Bud Paige, Tracey and James Tenneson, and her faithful companion Smokey. Gwen's request was that neither memorial nor graveside services be held. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
JAMES B. JENKINS
James B. Jenkins, 58, of Camano Island, Born April 27, 1945, in Everett, to Bernard and Jean Jenkins, he lived most his life on Camano Island. He worked as a contractor and spent his free time fishing and enjoying the water on his boat. Survivors include one son, Joel Jenkins of Camano Island; and four daughters, Jolyn Knapp and Jeri Molnar, both of Camano Island, Julie Stach of Warm Beach, and Jana Szczublewski of Appleton, WI; 11 grandchildren; brothers, Gary Jenkins of Camano Island, David Jenkins of Kalispell, MT, and Steve Jenkins of Hamilton, WA; one sister, Margaret "Peggy" Bakker of Lynden, WA.
He was preceded in died Sun., Nov. 2, 2003. He was born in Weehawken, NJ, Sept. 6, 1925. He passing.
He is survived by his two loving children, his son, Robert C. Jensen, and his daughter, Robin L. (Jensen) Carmichael; son-in-law, Michael Carmichael; and his three grandchildren, Jade Altman, Rohana Carmichael, and Elwood Carmichael. Robert was a resident of the Northwest for about 14 years and had worked most recently at the Burlington Bon-Macy store for the past three years.
Prior to this time, he resided on Camano Island. Before moving to the Northwest, he resided in Southern California after leaving the East Coast in his early twenties.
Mr. Jensen proudly served in the United States Army from December 1943 to May 1945, receiving the WWII Victory Medal and EAME Campaign Medal. Our family would like to thank all of Dad's friends and extended family, and his medical care givers for their many kind efforts, cards and prayers throughout his illness. In particular, we would like to thank Dr. Monroe Whitman of Arlington for his expert care and companionship, along with his dedicated staff. Thanks to everyone at Hospice of Skagit County; each person helped us with our every need, especially nurse, Tim Davis, with his endless efforts to keep Dad comfortable. Much appreciation to all the kind folks at the Bon, whose many cards and notes really kept Dad's spirits up. Thanks to the compassionate staff at Home Place, and also to the loving care given to us at Mountain Glen Retirement Center. Charlotte and Debra, thanks to you both, too. We thank Dad's special neighbors: Bob Kelley for all the visits, assistance with transportation, and special friendship. To Sharon and Lonnie for always looking out for Dad, and to Lee and Ernie for your concern and help. Terri, Robbie, Georgia, and Paula, thanks for your support and prayers. A very special thank you to Lela, our Visiting Angel. Also thanks go out to anyone whom I may have forgotten. At Dad's request, there will be no memorial service.
MARION McDONALD
Marion Kathleen (Teeft) Sweeten McDonald was passed away Oct. 25, 2003.
She had lived in the United States since her marriage to Wallace McDonald Sweeten in 1938. They made their home in Michigan, where her son David Wallace Sweeten was passed away in 1983. Marion then death in 1993.
Marion graduated from Cayuga High School and was enrolled in Alma College, Thomas, Ontario, when a tragic accident took the life of her father, and her mother was left an invalid. The family business, along with the care of her young sister, became Marion’s responsibility. During this time, she turned to the study of music at Toronto University. She later taught piano for eight years and played for her home church, United Church of Canada, from 1930 to 1938. She leaves her son, David Wallace Sweeten and his wife (Lois) of Moses Lake, WA; her sister, Frieda Hedley, Dunnville, Ontario, Canada; and two nephews, Duane and Grant Hedley and their families; a cousin, June Bryson and her family of Edmonds, WA; a step-daughter, Teresa Wood and her family of Fresno, CA. She was a member of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church.
Those wishing to remember her may give to a charity of their choice or St. Aidan's Episcopal Church. She will be laid to rest at Camano born in Havre, MT May 18, 1932, and passing was sudden and tragic, we are comforted by the knowledge that his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, welcomed Omer home Friday morning with the words, "Well done, thy good and faithful servant."
He was the son of Ingval and Olina Thon who farmed out of Kremlin, MT. He lived in Montana until 1943, when he moved to Mount Vernon, WA after the death of his niece, Verna Lee Carrier, he and Pam raised her youngest daughter, Lori-Anne. Omer is survived by his sister, Mabel Cooper of Mount Vernon; daughter, Lori-Anne McPherson and her husband Dean, and their sons, Gregory, Ian, Cullen and Daniel of Camano Island; step-son Jerry Burnell, Jr. of Hillsboro, OR and his children, Lindsay, Kristen, Ryan, Amber and Tad; nephew, Gene Cooper of Mount Vernon; niece, Linda Robbins and family of Renton; nephew, Don Amzen and family of Enumclaw; nephew, Gene Mortenson of Redlands, CA; special family, George and Cathy Nygard and their children, Jessica, Andy and Kurt of Sumas, WA; special cousin, Margaret Swick of Havre, MT; numerous other cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends that he has made during his lifetime and especially his friends at the round table.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mae Arnzen. Memorial services will be held at Camano Chapel Fri., Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m.
