WILLIAM G. PORTER
Bill, 83, born May 17, 1920, to John and Jane Porter at Swedish Hospital in Seattle and attended Lakeside and the University of Washington, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. After graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and saw action during World War II in Okinawa and other areas of the Pacific. He was called back during the Korean War but was not sent overseas. Instead, he remained stateside to train troops. Bill liked to talk about his war experiences and was very proud of being a Marine.
In 1950, Bill passed away Feb. 7, 2004, at Skagit Valley Hospital, Mount Vernon, following a brief illness. Vernon was a resident of Josephine Sunset Home in Stanwood. Arrangements pending under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
DOROTHY L. WEIR
Dorothy La Vern Weir, 80, of Camano Island, born on May 11, 1923 to her proud parents, Clyde and Mary McBride in Uncas, WA, a railhead during the great logging days around Discovery Bay. She spent her childhood growing up in the Lake City area. Her favorite sports were tennis and swimming. She took frequent fishing and camping trips with family and many trips to their cabin at Camp Comfort on Camano Island.
She met and passed away Jan. 21, 2004 in Carmichael, CA after a long illness. Geraldine was married her childhood sweetheart Alfred Flage. Because of health reasons, they moved to Sacramento in 1950. Geraldine retired in 1983 from American River College after 25 years of service.
Geraldine was preceded in passed away Sun., Dec. 7, 2003, at Cascade Hospital in Arlington.
She was married to Duane, who passed away in 1983. She has 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be no services. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be sent to your favorite charity. We will miss you, Mom!
FRAN O’DAY
Fran O’Day, 66, of Camano Island, born March 26, 1937, in Seattle. She raised six children and was retired from the nursing profession. She was an avid gardener and cook. She loved being a mom, grandma and great-grandma, and since her retirement, had enjoyed traveling.
She leaves her beloved fiancé, Thor Olsen of Camano Island; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Lance Miller of Las Vegas, Jeffery and Laura Miller of Marysville, Mark Miller of Seatac, Patrick and Carmen O'Day of Tulalip, and Christopher O’Day and Heather Rossman of Stanwood; daughter and son-in-law, Nanette and Michael York of Camano Island; brother, Clayton Kline of Arlington; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Daryl Brayton of Camano Island; beloved grandchildren, Angie, Rocky, and Tristin Miller, Misty Jurgensen, Tricia Miller, Vanessa, Jason and Brian O'Day, and Carissa O'Day; many great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends.
Fran was preceded in died Jan. 19, 2004, at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mt. Vernon. Jack was married Sept, 12, 1942.
Jack had enlisted in the Navy Intelligence Corps in January of 1942, and he and Mary spent the war years in Washington, DC and Boulder, CO. After the war, in 1945, they returned to the University of Washington and soon moved to Edmonds to begin raising their family of three children. Jack worked for many years as an accountant for West Coast Metal Products in Edmonds, Heisdorf and Nelson Farms in Kirkland, and the State of Washington Department of Social and Health Services in Olympia.
He and Mary retired to Camano Island, where they enjoyed many years together gardening, bird watching, and traveling around the Pacific Northwest. They spent their last years together at Warm Beach Senior Community. Throughout their lives, Jack and Mary cared deeply for their family, friends, and the larger community. They were loving parents and cared for their parents and brothers and sisters. Jack and Mary worked to support schools, a clean environment, and social justice. Jack was a Scout leader, Little League umpire, and precinct chair for the Democratic Party. Jack and Mary were founding members of the Northlake Unitarian Fellowship (now church).
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Mary Jean Davies of Warm Beach; his children, John Davies and Linda Schandelmeier of Fairbanks, AK; Doug and Laurie Davies of Stanwood; and Carolyn Davies and Don Short of Kirkland; six nieces and nephews; and six grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, Jack had hundreds of relatives in the area north of Seattle. He will be dearly missed by all of his family and friends for his not-too-subtle wit, his wonderful artistic ability -- which included some beautiful wood carvings, following the tradition of the coastal Indians -- his commitment to improving people’s lives, care for his children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren, and six decades of devotion to his cherished wife, Mary.
A memorial service was held at the Warm Beach Senior Community Sat., Jan. 24. ARVID W. EGGENBERGER
Arvid W. Eggenberger, 80, of Stanwood, born March 7, 1923, in Lake City, MN to John and Lillian Eggenberger. He graduated from Lake City High in 1941. He proudly served his country in the Air Force during W.W.II, until his honorable discharge Oct. 20, 1945.
Arvid death on June 7, 1998. He worked as carpenter with the Seattle School District until his retirement April 1, 1988, where he remained a proud member of the Carpenters Union, Local #131. Arvid was also preceded in Cemetery Association, 101 Seventh St. S., Lake City, MN 55041 in honor of his parents. Cremation and arrangements under the care of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood. Upon Dad's request, private memorials will follow.

LINDA L. SANDS
Linda Louise Sands, 61, a resident of Burlington, Born on July 2, 1942 in Seattle at Swedish Hospital, she grew up on Camano Island, graduated from Stanwood High School and attended Gonzaga University. Survivors include her husband, Jack; two sons, John Sands of Cleveland, OH, and Tim Sands and his wife Tuesday of Everett; and granddaughter, Logan Sands.
Graveside inurnment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wed., Jan. 28, at the Burlington died Wed., Jan. 21, 2004, at Josephine Sunset Home, Stanwood.
She was death by her parents, Edward and Amelia Schilferth; and sister Alma. Estelle's family would like to thank Josephine Sunset Home, Merrill Gardens, as well as our spe-cial friends in the community, for their wonderful care. ARNOLD SECORD
Arnold Secord, of Camano Island, born in Saint Cloud, MN Oct. 24, 1924. He served in the Army during WWII. He and Violet Dorry were death by parents, Gillmore and Minnie Secord; brothers, Darrell and Virgil; and grandson, Bobby Maurer. He is survived by wife, Violet; son, Gary and friend Marge; son, Kyle; daughters, Wanda Boner and husband Dan, Gail Eidsness and husband Tom; sister, Elaine Wipper; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Arnold was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is loved and missed by his family and friends. A memorial service will be held Sat., Feb. 7, 1:30 p.m., at American Legion, 88th Street, Stanwood.
WINNIFRED EMERSON
Winnifred "Winnie" Emerson Born Winnifred May Bruce May 22, 1919, in Sunnyside, WA to Fred and Bertha Reynolds Bruce, she graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1937. In 1939 she married Allen R. Emerson in Sunnyside. In 1946 they moved to Bainbridge Island to begin a 27-year career with Washington State Parks. As a ranger's wife, she played an active role in the inception and development of three parks: Fay Bainbridge State Park (1946-1949), Yakima Sportsman State Park (1949-1952), and, finally, Camano Island State Park (1952-1973), where she welcomed park visitors into her home as family members. She worked seasonally at Twin City Foods in Stanwood before beginning a 20-year career with the First National Bank of Stanwood in 1959. There, she always greeted her customers with warmth and interest. Few people remained strangers to Winnie. After retirement, her enthusiasm for meeting people led to her work as a census taker in 1980 and 1990.
Her desire to offer a ready hand wherever needed led to 60 years of volunteering, including the following organizations: the VFW, DAV, American Legion, Camp Fire Girls, Stanwood-Camano Fair, and the Camano Senior Center, where she focused her work for the past 10 years. She supported the concept and encouraged the building of the center, then served as a board member and an officer. She also participated in many center activities and regularly drove Camano seniors to medical appointments. She was predeceased in 1987 by Al Emerson, her husband of 42 years, and in 1947, by Wendy Allynn Emerson, her infant daughter.
She is survived by her son, James Haba and his wife, Erica, of Hillsborough, NJ; daughters, Victo-ria Haba Hull and her husband Barry of Red Hook, NY, and Kathleen Emerson Shoop and her husband Jim of Bow, WA; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren; siblings, Frances Cheek, Betty Heath, Glen Bruce, Mabel Brumback, Beverly Henry, Johnnie Rogers; and sister-in-law, Carol Bruce, wife of Robert Bruce, deceased. She was also pre-deceased by her sister, Julia. In addi-tion, she leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and much-loved friends.
A memorial reception is planned for March 20 at the Camano Senior and Community Center; details to be announced later.
