SAMUEL A. MESSER
Samuel Andrew (Sam) Messer, USMC, retired, was died Sept. 26, 2002, in Mount Vernon at the age of 98. He was the fourth of eight children of Louis A. and Elizabeth Messer.
Sam's early life was spent in Seattle, and at the age of nine, the family moved to Rolling Bay, on Bainbridge Island. They remained there until 1923, when the family returned to Seattle. Sam commuted by ferry to high school in Seattle.
On Dec. 28, 1924, he went to a party at the church and saw the "cutest little chick I'd seen in quite awhile" sitting with his sister Grace. Her name was Ida Schmidt. Ida noticed him and asked Grace if she knew who that "good looking fellow" was. They died April 22, 2002, just nine days short of their 76th anniversary.
Sam had several passions in his life: Ida, his girls, and the Marine Corps. He was a Marine for 32 years, but because "once a Marine, always a Marine, " he was one until his death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters; daughter, June Walbridge, and great-grandson, Michael A. Ritchie. The years of Sam's life were long and full of life, love, and honor. We're very proud to have been his daughters. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Sat., Oct. 5, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanwood. Cremation by Evergreen-Washelli, Seattle.
