PAUL R. GIBBS
Paul Born in Price, Utah Dec. 23, 1925, Paul moved with his parents to Portland, OR as a teenager. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in World War II, where he was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and participated in the D-Day invasion. Paul and Barbara were born Oct. 16, 1928, in Kirkland, and born May 3, 1921, death by her husband, Gordy; brother, Mike; sisters, Doris and Mickey; and a grandson, Chris. She is survived by one daughter, Arlene (JO) Neukirsner in Austria; son, Gordon (Bud) Baxter in Utah; and son, Bruce Baxter in Montana; brother, Charles Emery in Kirkland; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Although Alzheimer's took its toll on her, she will be remembered for her witty personality and beautiful, bright smile, which remained, even to the end.= A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
CAROL J. CHANDLER
In the early hours of Friday, March 26, 2004 Carol Jane Brown, died April 5, 2004.
Mary was passed away Fri., April 9. He went home to be with the Lord and to be reunited with his loved ones. Earl was born and raised in Isanti, MN. He has lived in Washington for the past 25 years. Earl earned his living driving truck. He enjoyed traveling, church, spending time with friends and family. He was a loving father and grandfather. Earl is survived by his four children: Ron Noren (Leslie), Bruce Noren (Jo Ellen), Marilyn Welch (Steve), and Trudy Barnes; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held April 14, 1 p.m., at Camano Chapel on Camano Island. Directing Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
NORTON A. STEELE
There will be an open house to celebrate the memory of Thora and Norton Steele Sat., April 10, 2 to 5 p.m. at their home, located at 1542 Carol St., in the Camano Country Club area.
AMANDA RILEY
Amanda Clarice Knutson Clark Riley, known to many as Aunt Mandy, born in Burnett County, WI Aug. 8, 1913. Amanda married Wilbur Riley in 1965. Wilbur's children were adults, but once again, Amanda took on the role of mother and grandmother without hesitation. Amanda moved to Washington in 1942, and lived in the Bellingham and Camano Island areas. She was a cook at St Luke’s Hospital for 23 years, a member of the Lutheran Church and life-long member of the Grange.
Once Amanda retired, she took on volunteering and house sitting to keep herself busy. This time the pets she cared for took center stage in her life. How she loved her little doggies and always had a treat for them! Graveside services will be held at Greenacres passed away Sat., March 20 at 84 years of age. He was death, Loyd Armstrong of Camano Island, and Ralph Armstrong of Oklahoma City. He leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Jayne Armstrong of Camano Island; his sister, Pat Brown (Barney) of Clinton, OK; his daughters, Kathie Coart (John) of Bellevue, Dana Armstrong (David Sakahara) of Bellevue and Debi Holland (Bill) of Camano Island; grandchildren, Kristen Blake (Braden), Karin Coart, Rebecca Kay (Gary) and Rick Holland. Jack was a veteran of World War II, where he was in the 749th tank battalion serving in France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic service in action.
A special thanks to the wonderful and loving staff at Mira Vista for their compassionate and loving care of Jack and his family during his final days. Jack will be buried
with his mother, father and brothers in Clinton, OK, where they grew up. Remembrances may be made to the charity of your choice.
HAROLD ELMGREN
Harold (Hal) Elmgren, 89, of Camano Island and former longtime Seattle resident, born Jan. 8, 1915, in Portland, OR, but spent much of his life in Seattle, where he owned and operated Aurora Carburetor and Electric until he retired in 1977.
As a very young man, he had a bicycle repair shop. His next venture was an auto upholstery shop. This is when he became a charter member of the Oregon Roadster Club. He had a great zest for life and enjoyed his retirement years fully, golfing, gardening, music (playing the piano), reading and "tinkering" with automobiles.
The last 15 years were very special. Hal and his wife moved to Camaloch, where Hal enjoyed the camaraderie of the Men's Golf Club. Hal is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois; son, John; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in born Feb. 1, 1916, to Arnold and May Blades in Maryhill, WA. Hazel died when she was four, and the family moved to Hillsboro, OR where her mother taught school until Hazel was a junior in high school. They then moved back to Maryhill, WA. Hazel graduated from Goldendale High School in 1933. She then attended Yakima Valley Junior College one year and transferred to Eastern Washington State Teacher College in Cheney, WA and graduated in 1936. In 1936 she married Homer W. Greer, and together they built an excellent home lumber business. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage.
She was very active in First Christian Church, where she attended from 1948-1981. She served as a deaconess, secretary of church board, church clerk for nine years, church choir and various other committees. Hazel was very active in community work, serving as president of Junior Women's Club, Garden Club and Novella Club, and vice-president of the District Junior Federated Women's Clubs. She has been a member of Camano Chapel since 1981.
She leaves behind husband, Homer W. Greer; son, Joseph Terry Greer of Sunnyside; sister, Emma Jean Blades Miller of Moxes, WA; granddaughter, Kimberly Christenson and husband Scott of Everett; grandson, Cameron Morris Greer; great-grandsons, Andrew Wesley Christenson, Jeffrey Allen Christenson, Christian Shoman Greer; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. Viewing will be at Gilbertson Funeral Home Chapel, Stanwood Tues. and Wed., March 30 and 31, 1 to 4 p.m. Graveside service will be Thurs., April 1, 11 a.m., at Camano Chapel, 867 S. West Camano Dr., Camano Island. A graveside service will be held in Sunnyside, WA at a later date. Memorials may be sent to American Lung Association or Camano Chapel. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
JENNIE M. HERNANDEZ
Jennie May Hernandez, 23, of Oak Harbor, born Nov. 23, 1980 in Reno, Nevada. She served her country as a member of the U.S. Navy since Sept. 29, 2000, and was most recently attached to the "Garudas" of VAQ 134 at NAS Whidbey Island. Jennie is survived by her husband, Jose Hemandez; and son, Derek Hernandez of Oakdale, CA; mother, Loretta Passmore of Oakdale; father, Gary Passmore; and brother, Darrell Passmore of Camano Island; sister, Fay Sinare of Graham, NC; and her grandmothers, Leona Meegan of Modesto, CA, and Shirley Passmore of Camano Island. She will be sincerely missed by her many friends and coworkers. Funeral services were held 1 p.m., Mon., March 29, at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
KATHERINE JONES
Katherine Adele Marshall Jones born in Spokane and attended Holy Names Academy. After graduation, she found work in support of the war effort at Fairchild Air Force Base. Following W.W.II., she studied fine arts at the University of Washington, where, as a member of Delta Zeta Sorority, she met and passing. Joyous in life and peacefully accepting in death, Katherine will forever be remembered for her unlimited capacity to extend unconditional love freely and embrace all who entered her realm.
Other surviving family members include her children: Kathy, Robert, Gwen, Ellyn, Cynthia and their respective spouses: Gary Austin, Dan Hinkley, Guy Piercey, Terry Benham, Phil Oman; grandchildren: Jessica Austin, Katherine and Lauren Piercey, Bjorn and Alex Thoreen, Karl and Marina Oman. The family has special praise and thanks to head angel Kathy Peebler and her band of angels: Colleen Cooper, Karen Chestney, Janet Watke, Debbie Stratton, Trevor Fisher, Devenee Keltner and Holly Stang. These wonderful people provided Katherine with excellent and loving care. With their help, we were able to keep Katherine at home, as she wished. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are welcomed to the Kathy Peebler Caregivers Scholarship Fund, in memory of Katherine Adele Jones in care of Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation, PO Box 1209, Stanwood, WA 98292.
