ARLENE M. HOSKINS
Our loving, wife, mother, grandmother, Arlene Maltais Hoskins, lost her struggle with cancer at home at the age of 73 with her loving family surrounding her on March 14, 2004.

She graduated from Marysville High School in 1947. She dedicated her life to raising foster children and making their house a loving home. She enjoyed gardening and owned and operated Jerry's Upholstery for many years. She leaves her husband, Jerry of the family home; two sons, Craig (Sue) Burden, Jeremy (Traci) Hoskins; three daughters, Sandi (Lon) Nims, Terry (Clint) Anderson, Julie (Tim) Reid, all of Stanwood; sister, Margaret Beach of Marysville; sister-in-law, Esther (Dave) Miller of Tulalip Shores, WA; brother-in-law, Martin Hoskins of Alaska; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in Cemetery, Stanwood.

BRYON G. KAZDA
"As I sail on my new journey, I look back to say good-bye, and I see tears of sorrow. I then look ahead to see on the other side what is waiting for me. I see smiling faces of joy with open arms. Please know that I sailed safely."

Bryon G. Kazda of Camano Island, born Aug. 21, 1952, to Gary and Anne Kazda in Tacoma. He graduated from Franklin-Pierce High School in 1971. Bryon was a fourth generation brick mason belonging to BAC Union #1 of Washington for the past 30 years. Bryon is survived by his wife, Laura Gilliam-Kazda; and son, Robert Vance Kazda; two sisters, Connie Hamann and Corrie Kazda; one brother, Glen Kazda; and his parents.

A celebration of his life was held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, 1318 East SR 532, Camano Island, at 3:30 p.m., Sat., March 13. Remembrances of Bryon may be sent to: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Contributions, J5-200, P.O. Box 19024, Seattle, WA 98109-1024.

SHIRLEY MATZKE
A celebration of Shirley Matzke's life will be held Sat., March 20 at 2 p.m. at the Little White Church on the Hill in Silvana on Hwy. 530. For those wishing, donations in Shirley's memory to Skagit Hospice, 2031 Hospital Dr., Sedro-Woolley, WA, 98284 or Camano Arts Association (Public Art Fund or Art Scholarship Fund), PO Box 2530, Stanwood, WA 98292 are suggested.

KENNETH POMAJEVCH
Kenneth M. Pomajevich, 61, born Sept. 30, 1942, in Missoula, MT the son of Christ and Elnora Pomajevich. He attended school in Superior and graduated in 1961. After graduation, he attended the University of Montana and played on the Grizzly football team for two seasons.

Ken later joined the military. He served as a communications officer in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Thailand. After completing his service, Ken returned home to Montana, where he met and born Nov. 26, 1971. The family, which also included Anita's son, Chad DeLong, resided in Montana until 1973. His family then moved to Southern California, where he began his career with Otis Elevator, eventually transferring to Seattle.

Ken inherited his father's ability to solve mathematical and other analytical problems "on the job." He enjoyed a very successful career with Otis managing the installation of elevators in high-rise buildings, including the Columbia Tower in downtown Seattle. He later became an elevator inspector for the state of Washington. Two of his nephews, Jon Jasper and Michael Pomajevich, followed in his career footsteps. Ken was instrumental in helping them secure their positions, and he was very proud of their accomplishments.

On Jan. 29, 1977, Ken death by his father, Christ Pomajevich.

He is survived by his mother, Elnora Pomajevich of Polson; his wife, Kaye of Camano Island; his son, Scott Pomajevich and wife Arron and their children Brandon, Klarisaa, Cassidy, Tommy, Gracie and Sophie of Helena; stepson, Chad Delong; stepdaughter, Lisa Butt and husband Clarence and children Rachel and Kevin; stepson, Jeff North and wife Anna and children Makayla and Jacob; brother, Chris Pomajevich of Haiti; sister, Pat Jasper of St. Regis; and Rick Jasper and sister Roberta DiFranco and husband Bob DiFranco of Sandpoint, ID. Other survivors include his nieces and nephews and their families, Michael and Nancy Pomajevich, Eric and Karen Pomajevich, Ryan and Amanda Pomajevich, Shelly and Al Dunlap and son Connor, Jon and Carlila Jasper and children Jordan and Hayden and Ken and Barb Jasper and children Jacob and Carter.

Ken was an avid hunter and fisherman. He shared this passion with his son, Scott, and his nephews and taught them to love the same. Family and friends meant the world to Ken. He was truly happy when he was in their company. Whether he was taking his family crabbing off the coast of Seattle, going hunting with the boys or preparing his favorite food for a party, the event was always livelier with Ken around. Ken was a good dad, a generous host and a true friend. We will greatly miss his love of life, wonderful smile, boisterous laugh and those enormous "bear hugs." A memorial service and spreading of ashes in Skidoo Bay at Flathead Lake will take place this summer at his request.

THORA OLAVA
(BOYER) STEELE
Mrs. Norton A. Steele, of Camano Island, Born Oct. 14, 1919, in Libby, Montana, she grew up in Issaquah with her parents, Olaf and Rose Boyer, and brothers, Hans and George. Thora graduated from Issaquah High School. She death, she was a volunteer for the Children's Orthopedic Hospital. Thora enjoyed her family and working in her beautiful gardens. Thora's warmth, love, fantastic stories of her life and her sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew her. She was a loyal friend; she has numerable friends here and across the country.

She leaves all family members mentioned above and two nephews, Bill and Dick Boyer-Goben of Renton, WA; Tory, Teal and Troy Goben and their spouses; Patti Steele of Seattle, and Linda Steele of Phoenix, AZ and her children, and Scott White of Camano Island and his children and grandchildren. The family requests no flowers, please. Remembrances can be made to Children's Orthopedic Hospital, or, as Thora requested, a kindness to someone less fortunate. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

JACOB DANIEL TANIS
Jacob Daniel Tanis, 19, of Mill Creek, WA, born July 4, 1984, in Everett to Joan and Daniel Tanis. He grew up in Stanwood, graduating with the class of 2002. His passions in life were his family and friends, the love for the outdoors, dancing, summers spent at the family cabin in Montana, where he enjoyed hiking, fishing, swimming and visiting the local ice cream shop. He was also fond of Lake Chelan, and the fun times there, shared with friends.

Jacob is survived by his mother, Joan (Jim) Mitchell; father, Daniel Tanis; Dan’s long-time companion, Jan Michael; sister, Sarah (Aaron) Lenentine; stepsister, Jamie Mitchell; stepbrother, Jimmy Mitchell; grandparents, Ann Tanis, Ray Tanis and Gertrude Swantz; niece Zoe Lenentine; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jacob now joins his beloved grandfather, Lowell Swants; and great-grandmother, Ella Tanis. He will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched. Jacob’s legacy continues to live in our hearts as we remember his love for family and friends, and his wonderful warm smile. A service of remembrance will be held at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 5115 100th NE, Marysville, WA, 360-659-7777, Sat., March 20, 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, The American Heart Association, or a charity of choice.

SHIRLEY E. MATZKE
Artist Shirley Matzke, passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 73. After graduating in 1948 from Johnsburg Central School in the Adirondacks, she studied art in Washington, D.C. at the Corcoran School of Fine Arts and the Hubbard School of Ceramics, where she taught classes in design.

In 1952, she born. Later Shirley owned and operated the Yankee Craft House in Wevertown, NY. Shirley worked for eight years with art critic Clement Greenburg as the curator and conservator for the estate of sculptor David Smith in Bolton Landing, NY. Shirley also exhibited her art in Albany and New York City. In 1994, Shirley retired to Camano Island with her long-time partner and friend, Dennis Conroy. She taught classes for the Everett Community College and continued painting and exhibiting in various galleries in Washington State.'

Shirley also enjoyed snow skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking, canoeing, and fishing. In addition to painting, she wrote poetry, played the piano and was an avid reader. Shirley assisted Dennis in writing "Adirondack Cross-Country Skiing: A Guide to Seventy Trails" in 1992.

In April 2001, she joined her daughter, Karla Matzke, renowned Northwest artist, in a retrospect of "mother and daughter" paintings held at the History of the World Fine Arts Gallery on Camano Island. Shirley was predeceased by her parents and brothers, Theron, George and Don Hall. She is survived by her sister, Mary Baroudi of Florida; daughter, Karla Matzke of Camano Island; daughter, Kim Peschel and husband Brian; grandson, Cameron Peschel of Seattle; partner, Dennis Conroy of Camano Island; her ex-husband, Frank Matzke of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

A special thanks to the Skagit Hospice nurse, body care and social work staff and volunteers for their support and extraordinary care of our mom. Memorial services and a celebration of Shirley's artistic life will take place Sat., March 20, 2 p.m., at the historic "Little White Church on the Hill" in Silvana. Remembrances may be made to Skagit Hospice, 2031A Hospital Dr., Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284.

DONITA P. SHADBOLT
passed away Feb. 12, 2004. She is preceded in died quietly at home surrounded by loving family, including her very special sister, Polly, who gave such tender and devoted care to Edna for many years.

Edna is survived by five sisters, two brothers and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members, all who loved her dearly. Her parents, her beloved husband and two sisters preceded her in Cemetery, under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Snohomish County or the charity of your choice. Edna -- we miss you so much and will love you forever.

WILLIAM G. LINDELL
William G. Lindell, 81, of Stanwood, born Oct. 15, 1922, in Arlington. Bill was the last of 11 children to pass. He proudly served in the U.S. Coastguard during W.W.II. In 1982, he retired from a career in carpentry. Bill spent his time in retirement gardening and farming on his farm in Machias.

Bill was preceded in born Nov. 25, 1913, in Baum, OK, to Henry Elias and Fannie Exie Birmingham Sampley. When his mother death by his parents and his stepmother; his wives, Lucille Burman, Gloria Sampley, and Thelma Maples Sampley; his brothers, Oakley and Henry (Junior) Sampley; and a half-sister, Victoria Carrell.

He is survived and loved by his sister Mryl Collins of Sulphur, OK; a half-sister, Genevieve Colclasure of Ardmore, OK; a sister-in-law, Bonnie Sampley of Baum; his daughter, Wanda (Bill) Flanders Needles, California; his son, Sam (Chris) Sampley of Camano Island, and stepson, Bob (Lynda) Burke of Lancaster, CA. Missing their "grandpa" will be his four grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan Sampley, Marion Hardman, and Tom Ison; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and good friends.

Gilbertson Funeral Home in Stanwood will handle arrangements for Sam's final trip home to Baum, OK. Private burial will be held at Lone Cedar Cemetery in Baum, alongside his parents. At Sam's request, no services will be held. Remembrances can be made to the American Cancer Society in the name of Gloria Sampley.
