JACOB LAAN
On Sept. 17, 2004, Jacob Laan went home to be with his Lord. He was death by his beloved wife, Charlotte Laan in 1998; one son, Jacob Clark Laan in 1969; and one brother, Chris Laan. At his request, there will be no service. Cremation was under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, remembrances are suggested to Josephine Sunset Home. where he was given such kind and loving care. A special message: Jacob was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family.
ILONKA S. WILLIAMS
"A Last Ballet for Miss Ilonka" Ilonka Scheer Williams, 97, peacefully went with the Lord Sept. 8, 2004, at her home of 28 years on Camano Island. Miss Ilonka was passed away in 1990. Despite contrary advice, Ilonka was determined to remain in her and Jack’s home on Camano Island, which she loved dearly. All who knew Ilonka knew her determination. Miss Ilonka contributed to improving many people’s lives. She taught piano to the blind, dancing to the handicapped, was a kindergarten teacher, and after retiring to Camano Island, she volunteered countless hours playing piano at retirement homes. Even while convalescing with a broken hip, Ilonka, at 95 could be found in the recreation room, at the piano, directing group activities.
Ilonka is survived by a nephew, Bill Scheer and his family, of Miami, FL, and her dear friends on Camano Island. Miss Ilonka’s wishes were for no services. Arrangements under direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
W. EUGENE HEGELE
W. Eugene (Happy) Hegele was death by his wife of 67 years, Caroline (Wieneke) Hegele on March 2, 2003; brothers, Bruce Thorne, Allen Thorne, Bill Thorne; sisters, Alice Lind and Sue Clark.
He is survived by his son, Edward G. Hegele and wife Jane, of LaGrande, OR; and daughter, Karen L. (Hegele) Nieuwendorp and husband John of Bellingham; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Chaplain Wes Dodge of Warm Beach Manor in Stanwood, will conduct the memorial service at Warm Beach Senior Community, Wed., Sept. 22, 1 p.m. Other arrangements are being handled by Gilbertson Funeral Home of Stanwood. born in Seattle and grew up in Auburn, graduating from Auburn High School in 1980. He went to Life Chiropractic West in California. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Michael is survived by his wife, Amy "Rebecca"; children, Tricia and Bobby; mother, Linda Wilbourne of Surprise, AZ; and brother, Dan Butters of Mount Vernon.
He was preceded in died peacefully Sept. 9, 2004. He was death.
Griff served as "Bos'n" in the American Merchant Marines for more than 35 years, and traveled around the world many times in their service. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard after W.W.II, pursuant to this service during the war. His love of the sea and travel was reflected in his many stories and tales of his adventures, as well as the unique memorabilia he brought back to his home.
Locals of Camano Island and Stanwood will recall this wonderful man as the "salty looking" guy with a beard, an eye patch and a wonderful old cane decorated with fancy knots. The Harpsters would like to thank the following people for the love and respect shown to Griff over the years: Walt Isakson, Steve and Adrienne Osborn, Esther Immer, Brudy Jordan of Camano Island; Tom and Ann Peebles of Anacortes; Helen and Bob Gerry of Edmonds; Ellen Means of Tucson, AZ; Dennis Nixon of Cottage Grove, OR; Bill and Lenore Gleeson of Roseburg, OR; Jacqueline Robb of Sunnyvale, CA; the bus drivers for Island Transit; Dr. Robert Jacobsen of Stanwood Camano Medical Center; and Joseph and Pepe and staff at Amigos Mexican Family Restaurant in Stanwood.
In lieu of services, a celebration of Griff's life is being planned. His ashes will be scattered over the Pacific Ocean, joining other great treasures of this world.
JAMES R. MARR
James Robert (Jimmy) Marr was went to be with the Lord Sept. 11, 2004, following a short, courageous battle with cancer.
Preceded in married 47 years. He is survived by his wife, Grace of Camano Island; sons, Robert R. Marr (Edna) and Jon Marr (Sandy); three daughters, Linda Balcom (Larry), Kit Ness (Bob), and Laura Hill (Dave); step-daughter, Linda Robinson (Douglas) and step-son, Carl Hughes (Margo); 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Jimmy served the Lord many years at Dunlap Baptist Church (several committees, deacon); after their move to Camano Island in 1991, he served at Island Baptist Church (deacon, greeter, encourager!). His hobbies included clarinet, painting and bowling. Jimmy loved and was loved by his family and friends, and he will be greatly missed. He was at his best when showing love in the name of Christ. Memorial gifts may be sent to Island Baptist Church, 147 Woodland Dr., Camano Island, WA 98282, to Hospice, or to a charity of your choice.
KRISTIN C. STRAND
Kristin Cornwell Strand was married Al, and they lived in a modest house on an apple ranch a few miles outside Yakima. There she made friends with people who remained such all her life. She often said the time on the ranch was a very happy time for her. In 1969, son Eric was died there in the middle of the afternoon Sept. 4, surrounded by her family and many friends. Kris was honest, hard-working, forthright, and dependable. Caring and thoughtful as a friend and devoted and loving as a wife and parent, she will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. Services were 2 p.m., Sept. 12, at Acacia Memorial Park in Seattle.
ROY A. VANVICK
Roy was died Sept. 8, 2004 on Camano Island. Roy attended Franklin High School, the University of Washing-ton and worked as a metal fabricator in the Motor Transportation Department for the City of Seattle. Upon retirement, he and his wife Mollyo moved to Camano Island, where he served terms as fire commissioner and water commissioner. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, enjoyed boating, fishing, master gardening, bridge club and family outings.
He is survived by his three sons, Ted (Charlene), Jon (Mary) and Don; four grandchildren, Amy, Tonie, Erika and Tracie; and five great-grandchildren, Jack, Anthony, Gunnar, Ella and Sonja. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Thurs., Sept. 16, at Gilbertson Funeral Home chapel, Stanwood. Arrangements under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
WILLIAM LANDVATTER
William (Bill) Gust Landvatter, 81, of Mount Vernon, began his everlasting life with Jesus Sept. 7, 2004, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Bill was married Jan. 4, 1944, in Salt Lake City. Bill owned and operated the Golden Egg Farm on the Old Red Brick Road in Redmond, WA, for 35 years. There, they raised four children. Bill was very active in his community as Kiwanis president, Little League coach, and as an organizer of the school for the handicapped in Houghton. He was a devoted member of Faith Lutheran Church, where he served as church council president.
Following the sale of the farm, Bill and Doris moved to Camano Island. Bill kept busy as a poultry consultant and remained active in his life of faith at Camano Lutheran Church.
Bill and Doris moved to Mount Vernon in 1995 and became members of First Lutheran Church. Bill continued to serve his Lord in the church, through Stephen’s Ministry and through the Christian witness of his life. Bill was preceded in passed away Mon., Aug. 30, 2004, at a local hospital. Florence was married Aug. 27, 1942. She also leaves behind her daughter, Holly Norton; son, Francis H. Stanton, Jr. (Rick); and her adopted daughter, Kathleen Olson. She has three grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Florence will be missed by all her family and friends who loved her so very much.
A funeral service was held Sat., Sept. 4, at the chapel of Purdy & Walter at Floral Hills Funeral Home, Lynnwood.
