On Sept. 3, 1931, Hugh met Leah Johnson and they dated for two and a half years. When Hugh and Leah were 19 years old, he asked Leah's mother for her hand in marriage. He and Leah purchased land on 192nd Street in Renton and spent 40 years in their home. In 1952 they purchased property on Driftwood Shores, so he and his sons could go duck hunting. In 1979 they retired to Camano Island. While in Utah, Hugh worked in the silver and coal mines. When he moved to Washington, he became a member of the Carpenters Union local 1797 for 59 years, and during this time, he worked 34 years for Strand Construction.
