Jess Hampton Stiltner
CENTRALIA - Jess Hampton Stiltner, 86, former Sunnyside Chief of Police passed away on January 15, 2004 at Sharon Care Center, Centralia.
He was born April 17, 1917 in Morton, Washington to Grant Ulysses and Sena (Clevenger) Stiltner.
He had been a resident of Olympia for the past 21 years. He attended Morton Schools and later taught law enforcement courses.
He was a veteran of W.W. II serving in the Army Air Corp in North Africa and Italy.
On September 27, 1942 Ms. Laura Johnson and Jess Stiltner were married in Seattle.
From 1945 to 1948 they owned and operated the Stiltner Shell service station in Ephrata, WA.
Jess and his wife Laura moved to Sunnyside in 1948 where Jess was the Richfield Oil Distributor.
In July of 1952 Jess began his employment with the City of Sunnyside, first as a police patrolman and in 1965 as Sunnyside Police Chief and served as Chief until he retired in June 1972. Following his retirement he and his wife Laura traveled extensively throughout the United States. His wife Laura died in 1979 and in 1980 Jess moved to Olympia, WA.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shriners.
An avid horseman, he was a member of the Afifi Mounted Patrol, and had been president of the Sunnyside Stampeders.
He belonged to the order of the Eastern Star, the Chiefs and Sheriffs Assn.
He was a founding member of the Sunnyside Elks, and belonged to the Lions Club, the Olympia Eagles, and the Fort Simcoe Council.
He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.
Jess is survived by his wife Phyllis K. (Coluccio) Ogle of Centralia, WA; his children Scott Stiltner and wife, Louanne and Karen Jaquish and husband, Pat both of Sunnyside, WA, Kirk Forrest Stiltner of Seattle, WA, Bob Coluccio and wife, Terry of Newport Beach, CA, Sherry Coluccio-Ritchie of Centralia, WA and Sandi Coluccio-Kunkler and husband, Bob of Rainier, WA.
He is also survived by his sisters Virginia Wheeler; Anna Best; Mary Lee Talbot and husband, Vic; Carmen Ceccanti and husband, Mel and Jean Longmire and husband, Dan, his brothers, Forrest Stiltner and Ronald Stiltner and wife, Billie, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. 3 brothers and a sister precede him in death.
Viewing and visitation will be held on Friday, January 23rd from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA.
Funeral Services for Jess Hampton Stiltner will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 24th at the Chapel of the Smith Funeral Home, Sunnyside, WA.
Burial will be in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside, WA.

Stella White
TOPPENISH - Stella E. White, 97, of Toppenish, WA, passed away Friday, January 16, 2004 at Garden Village in Yakima. She was born in Bemidji, MN to Emil and Helen Olson on August 9, 1906. Following her graduation from the Bemidji State Teachers College, she taught in northern Minnesota.
In 1937, Stella and a girlfriend worked for the summer in Wenatchee in the fruit packing sheds. While in Wenatchee she met Courtney White who was to become her mate for life. She returned to Minnesota to fulfill her teaching contract, but returned in 1938 to marry Courtney White, who was employed as a branch manager for the Washington Egg and Poultry Company, a company founded with the help of Courtney's father.
They moved to Aberdeen, WA in 1940. During WWII, Stella worked for Boeing as an inspector on the tail assembly of the B-17 at the manufacturing facility in Aberdeen, WA. Prior to adopting a son, William G. White in 1947, they raised a foster child, Donna Swanson for many years. In 1950, they moved to Yakima and then in 1953 to Sunnyside, WA. While in Sunnyside she taught English as a Second Language in the evenings to the migrant workers. In 1963, Stella and Courtney moved to Othello and then to Mt. Vernon in 1966.
In 1966 Courtney retired from Western Farmers and they moved to Toppenish, WA where they purchased Western Auto Store. They worked side-by-side until Courtney's death in 1979.
Stella loved her garden and yard and was quite proud of her ability to maintain it. Correspondence was her hobby and she wrote many letters daily to her friends and relatives. She was an active member with Christ Episcopal Church in Zillah.
Mom's first priority was her family. She used her time and resources to insure that they all received a higher education.
Stella was preceded in death by her husband and mate of 41 years, Courtney White in 1979, and her six brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her son, William G. White of Selah, WA and his wife, Carolyn; her five grandchildren: Sherry Moran of Milton-Freewater, OR and her husband, Tom; William A. White of Beaverton, OR; Russell Tarmann of Spokane, WA and his wife, Mandi; Carissa L. Davis of Spokane, WA; and Amy L. Schmidt of Selah, WA and her husband, Michael Schmidt; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2004 at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel, 2807 Terrace Heights Dr., Yakima, WA, with a reception to follow. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Association, American Heart Association, or the American Lung Association in care of Keith and Keith Funeral Home.
Gwendolyn Joan Guthrie
YAKIMA - Gwendolyn Joan Guthrie passed away January 2, 2004 at Chesterly Meadows in Yakima. Joan was born on January 1, 1922 in Whitewood, Saskatchewan. Eldest daughter of William and Emma Rochon. Joan is survived by her sister, Trixie Nichols.
Joan married G. Walter Guthrie in 1942 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Joan and Walter have four children, Gail and Fred Brien, Judy and Ralph Mizell, Delwin Guthrie and Marvin Guthrie. All of whom survived Joan and Walter. Joan is also survived by her grandchildren, Dan Brien, Darren Brien, Devon Brien and Jayson Hurd, Darren Mizell and Mandy Beaudry; five great-grandchildren, Katie Brien, Cole Brien, Spencer Brien, Samantha Brien, and Natatasha Brien; and nieces and nephews.
Joan moved with her family in 1959 from Regina, Saskatchewan to Surrey, British Columbia. In 1966 the family moved to Yakima and resided to the present time. Joan had a passion for gardening and enjoyed the time she spent making her yard beautiful. Joan was very dedicated to the Holy Family Parish where she attended services and many other functions. Family and friends loved her dearly. Joan will be missed by all who knew her. An Angel returned to heaven.
A time for final visitation has been set aside at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors, 201 N 2nd Street, on Thursday, January 8, 2004, beginning at 1:00 p.m. A Vigil service will be held at Shaw and Sons on Thursday, January 8, 2004 at 6:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Friday, January 9, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements in the care of Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.
Eugene Paul Stevens
TOPPENISH - Eugene Paul Stevens, 84, of Toppenish, passed away suddenly at his home Sunday, January 18, 2004.
Gene was born November 7, 1919 in La Plata, Missouri to Aaron and Lydia Stevens. Gene was raised and educated in Missouri. His father operated a family bakery and farm in La Plata. In the 1930's, during the depression period, the family business and farm were lost. In those days there were no financial-aid programs and thus no recourse. The entire family moved to the Yakima Valley in 1936. Gene was sixteen and the entire family lived and worked in the fields picking the crops.
Gene enlisted in the U.S. Marines Corp at the beginning of World War II, and served in the Pacific Theater of operation until the end of hostilities.
Gene was employed by the Utah and Idaho Sugar Inc, Toppenish, WA. in 1946. Gene worked there until his retirement in 1978. He worked with many fine men like himself, who came home to forget hardships, marry and raise a family. Gene ended his work career as a general supervisor and knew a great deal about sugar technology and production methods. Gene was an avid fisherman and gardener.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elsie Stevens, who passed away December 4, 2003.
He is survived by a son, John Stevens of Portland, Oregon; a daughter, Susan Hovey, of Las Vegas, Nevada; one brother and one sister, Joe and Coetta, in Wisconsin.
Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 23, 2004 at Elmwood Cemetery in Toppenish.
Funeral arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home.
