Ruth K. Poage
Ruth K. Poage, 69, of Yakima passed away on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Yakima Regional Hospital in Yakima. She was born on February 12, 1941 in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania to John and Therma (Rhodes) Donaldson. She was a homemaker and enjoyed postcard collecting, church activities and functions, various craftworks, volunteering, and working with children.
She is survived by her two sons, Brian Poage of Yakima and Keith (Mary) Poage of Yakima; brother, Alan (Martha) Donaldson of West Chester, PA; one granddaughter, April Wagner; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 10AM Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Gateway Assembly Church, 3410 1st Street in Union Gap. A time of viewing will begin one hour before the funeral. Graveside services will follow at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
Johnny Rasberry
Johnny Rasberry, 78, of Yakima died Friday, December 31, 2010. Mr. Rasberry was born in Quitman, La. He was a truck driver.
Survivors include five brothers, William Rasberry Sr. of Wapato, James Rasberry of Jonesboro, La., Dale Rasberry of Gleed, Donny Rasberry of Everett, Wash., and Gene Rasberry of Moxee; and a sister, Florence Jorgenson of Zillah.
No services are planned. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home of Zillah.
Melvin Douglas Mantey
Doug at 66 joined his eternal family in heaven. He was born October 25, 1944 in Yakima and passed away on December 30, 2010 after a battle with cancer.
He experienced many different jobs in his lifetime. A pharmaceutical sales rep, Amerigas Manager, auto glass company owner in Tucson, Arizona, and an East Valley School District substitute teacher. He served 20 years in the military, first in the Navy on the USS Kitty Hawk during the Vietnam era. He later attended Central Washington University and graduated with a B.A. in Education and then he relisted in the USAF as a reservist at Fairchild. He retired from the military in February 2005 as Master Sergeant.
Doug met the love of his life in 1990, Kara Huffman, through her work at Western RV. They married June 25, 1991 and moved to Tucson, Arizona allowing advancement in his military career.
Fishing was always fun and exciting, like the time the boat sank at the dock. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Melvin A. Mantey.
He is survived by his mother, Norma (Morford) Mantey, sisters, Linda (Denny) Copeland, JoAnne (Doug) Strader all of Yakima; nieces, Laura (Jared) Walker Folsom, California, Erin (Garrett) Joeckel, and Kelly Strader all of Yakima; his wife of 19 years, Kara; and three step-children, Darcie (Dan) Beeler of Boise, Idaho, Rachelle (Strader) Lowery of Yakima, and TJ (Christina) Huffman of Yakima six grandchildren, Chole, Emma, and Ashlyn Beeler; Jaycob and Colton Strader, and Hailey Huffman.
Doug was honored to have two great friends in his life, Brian Hoyt of Yakima, and Paul Shell of Tacoma. Fishing and traveling was the topic of many of their visits.
Visitation hours will be 9AM-11AM on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Peace Lutheran Church, 91 Wernex Loop Road in Selah. The funeral service will start at 11AM also on Wednesday at the church. Burial with Air Force Military Honors will be held following the service at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. A reception will follow at Peace Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Peace Lutheran Church.
Darwin “D.C.” Clifford Schut
Darwin "D.C." Clifford Schut, 68, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at his home after a tough 7-month battle with a cancerous brain tumor. He was born on March 13, 1942 in Yakima and worked for Central Pre-Mix for 37 years. On October 24, 1964, he married the love of his life, Kathy. Together they had two children, Kenneth and Tamara. Darwin enjoyed being around family and friends and loved photography. He also loved to garden and take their dog, Tippy for walks.
Darwin is preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Lillian Schut, and his sister Lillian Schrotenboer.
Survivors include Darwin's wife, Kathy Schut of Yakima, son Kenneth Schut and wife Renee of Yakima, and daughter Tamara Howard and husband Scott of Zillah, five grandchildren, Joshua West, Amanda Howard, Zachary Schut, Janelle Howard, Levi Schut, two brothers, Ed Schut of Moxee and Adrian Schut of Yakima, two sisters, Monie Flores of Yakima and Carol Pillar of Lincoln City, OR.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to the entire Hospice staff. In lieu of flowers the family would like donations to be made to The Memorial Foundation and designated to either the North Star Lodge or Hospice.
At his request, no services will be held, but a celebration will be planned at a later date.
Julie (Castilleja) Rodriguez
Our beloved Julie (Castilleja) Rodriguez, 62, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Yakima Memorial Hospital.
Julie was born on September 10, 1948, in Toppenish, WA to Luis M. (deceased) and Jovita (Hernandez) Castilleja. She was raised in Toppenish and graduated from Toppenish High School in 1967. She married Margarito (Mark) Rodriguez in 1969, and they had one son, Roberto Rodriguez. She worked for the Social Security Administration for many. As the oldest daughter in a family of 16 children, she was like a surrogate mother to her younger siblings. Julie was always thoughtful to everyone in the immediate family and relatives. She loved family gatherings and was godmother to many of her nephews and nieces. She loved to travel, cook, and listen to Tejano music, and was a crazy, avid fan of Elvis Presley. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, mother, aunt, and the best “nana” (grandma) in the whole world according to Drew and his brothers Alex and Junior. She was at peace and went to the be with the Lord, on Tuesday, with her family at her side.
Julie was preceded in death by her father, Luis M. Castilleja, her brother Richard Louis Castilleja, her sister Guadalupe Castilleja; her maternal grandparents Magdaleno “Mike” and Altagracia Hernandez; her paternal grandparents Genaro and Francisca Castilleja; nephews Luis Maximilliano Castilleja and Aiden Warwick, and various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Julie is survived by mother, Jovita (Hernandez) Castilleja, 14 brothers and sisters: Irene (Vicente) Gutierrez of Sunnyside, Alice (Raymundo) Lara of Yakima, Ofelia (Robert) Resendez of Sunnyside, John (Rebecca) Castilljea of Seattle, Lucy (Mark) Hoffmann of Yakima, Abel (Janet) Castilleja of Yakima, Livia Castilleja of Toppenish, Romauldo (Heidi) Castilleja of Benton City, Fabian (Lisa) Castilleja of Mabton, Alana (Joel) Delgado of Toppenish, Rose Greenwood of Yakima, Mary (Mathew) Winterfeld of Selah, Lisa Castilleja of Seattle, and Michael (Linda) Castilleja of Seattle; her son Robert (Lisa) Rodriguez and three grandchildren whom she loved very much, Andrew (“Drew”), Alex, and Roberto (“Junior”); approximately 200 nieces and nephews and numerous relatives.
Visitation will be offered 3PM-7PM with Recitation of Rosary at 5:30PM on Monday, January 3, 2011 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11AM on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at the Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Zillah. Burial will follow at the Elmwood Cemetery.
Bernard Daehler
Barney Daehler, 90, of Yakima, WA passed away Monday, December 27, 2010. Barney was born in Minonk, IL to William E. and Jennie Daehler. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1939 until 1959, then worked for the EBMUD as a Meter Reading Supervisor until his retirement in 1977. Barney and his wife Ann spent most of their married lives in San Lorenzo, CA. Barney moved to Yakima in 2008.
He is survived by two daughters: Sharon Hixson of Kerrville, TX and Bernalyn McGaughey of Naches, WA.
Memorial Services will be held Saturday, January 1 at 11 a.m. at the Meyer Auditorium of Living Care Center in Yakima. His cremated remains will be buried
at sea with full military honors. Barney was and always will be a proud Marine, caring father to his daughters and loving husband to his wife Ann, whom he now joins after 16 months of separation.
Robert Lyle Clem
Robert Lyle Clem died Sunday, December 26th, 2010 at age 72. He was born in Orofino, Idaho to Frank and Ada Clem on March 6, 1938. He was raised in northern Idaho and North Bend, Oregon.
He joined the Navy at a young age and was proud to have been a SeaBee, serving time in Antarctica (Operation Deep Freeze I & II) and Cuba.
Bob moved to Yakima in 1967 and began his career in radio and television broadcasting. In 1975 he started his own advertising agency. That same year he began traveling extensively across the U.S. and Canada as an entertainer. He was the “keynote” speaker for hundreds of conventions over the next 20 years.
He was a founder of the Yakima Air Fair and in 1995 became the manager of the Yakima Airport. He retired in 2005 and spent most days in his wood shop. He was an avid woodworker and always said that woodworking was his golf game.
He is survived by his wife, Rhinda, two sons, Cory (Marie) and Rob (Patty), a daughter, Marla, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister Frankie, four nieces and nephews and everyone else who’s reading this.
At Bob’s request, a private memorial will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made “In Memory of Bob Clem” to the Scholarship Fund at Perry Technical Institute.
