Richard Veenendaal
Our “Papa”, Richard Veenendaal went to be with Jesus, our Savior on Jan 31, 2011. Papa brought us up in a Christian home and for that we will always be grateful.
He taught us compassion for others and to put God first in our lives. Papa always did a lot of family activities with his girls, such as swimming, basketball, trips to Colorado, church activities, Christmas tree hunting and he always had time for his girls.
One of the special times was taking his girls fishing. Boy, did they keep him busy untangling the fishing line, by the time he got home he was totally exhausted.
His girls had a talent for singing, they were asked many times to sing at different places and he would sit and listen. He was so proud to know others enjoyed their music. He knew God had given them a way to witness to others, they sang mostly gospel songs about Jesus whom he loved.
His grandchildren were his treasures. They were such a blessing to Him and Nana. They would like to add a word for papa:
Samantha (age 19): I can think of many things I have learned from you: The importance of faith, how to catch a fish, taking time to enjoy the beauty of our world and many more things. I love you very much and look forward to seeing you in heaven.
Josh (age 15): When someone impacts your life far beyond what you first realize, its tough to say goodbye. The memories were the best they could be. So I’m not going to say goodbye, but catch ya later.
Tyler (age 13): My best memories of papa are having coffee time together when I was 5 and 6 years old and coming over to stay with Nana and Papa and playing cards until late at night. Nana usually kicked our butts.
Sarah (age 12): I still remember when we were at your old house and you would always chase us around the house. That was one of my favorite memories.
Theresa (age 10): I loved papas sense of humor, it was great. I also loved papas smile.
Mary (age 9): What I loved about papa is he was nice and he is the best grandpa anybody could have.
Breanna (age 9): Papa was a great shooter in the army and a great soldier.
Samuel (age 5): My papa played dominoes with me and I loved it when he took me to McDonalds.
Our papa was born on July 8th, 1933 to Gerrit and Gertrude Veenendaal. He joined a family of 3 brothers and 2 sisters: Peter, Gerald, Junior, Sophie and Trudy. In his childhood he moved to Denver, Colorado and after schooling joined the army as an engineer. He was the best sharp shooter out of 1200 men. He was stationed in Germany ready to go to Korea and on the Saturday night before departure the war was declared over, he was at a movie and the message was displayed on the screen. He was able to come home. After returning home, he came to the First Reform Church in Colorado where he met his sweetheart of 53 years. Soon after they moved to Zillah, Washington, where they bought a farm and learned how to grow fruit and harvest it. This was a real experience because he had no knowledge about farming, but he was a fast learner.
Then in a few years we had three daughters: Terri, Debbie and MaryAnn. Later we had three son in laws David, Bill and Mark and some wonderful grandchildren. He always felt totally blessed because he loved his family, provided for them and taught them biblical morals.
The family that greeted him into Heaven are his Dad and Mom, his brother, Junior and his sister, Sophia and two grandchildren Caleb Holloway and Matthew David Dunn.
We want to thank his Doctors who were so good to him, Dr. Aaron Anderson and Dr. Sean Cleary.
Knowing papas sense of humor we would like to say “see you later alligator”.
We all love you.
Visitation will be held from 1-7pm on Thursday and Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 Friday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Burial will follow in the Zillah Cemetery.
