Opal June Carrell
Opal June Carrell left this earthly home to be with her Maker and loved ones who preceded her on January 13th 2011. She passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. Born to John J. and Annie E. Schaeffer on June 10th, 1914 in Buena, WA., she was 96 years old when she passed away. She lived a long and full life. Her parents were early pioneers in Eastern Washington and came west in 1911 to settle on land being opened to development in what was then called Beulah Land, later renamed Buena Heights in the lower Yakima Valley.
Opal attended Buena Grade School, and later graduated from Toppenish High School in 1931. She later went on to Yakima Valley College and graduated in 1960 as an LPN. She worked 2 years at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. She married D.R. Doc Carrell on her birthday, June 10th, 1932. Together they started a family business in 1937 in Yakima known as D.R. Carrell, which was later renamed Carrell Crane and Heavy Hauling, Inc. She worked for the business as the bookkeeper until retirement, when it was sold in 1986. One of Opal's favorite interests over the years was gathering information and photos featuring scattered family members.
After the death of her husband in 1992, she continued to live in Yakima until the age of 93. In 2007 she moved to Lacey to live with her son, David and his wife, and to be near her other son John and his wife.
Opal was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister Estelle. Surviving family members include 2 sons, John Paul and David Rex with their wives Joanne and ZiNita, respectively, both from the Olympia area, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Interment will be on Friday, January 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, 3001 Terrace Heights Drive, Yakima, WA. 98901. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 9 S. 8th Ave., Yakima, WA. 98902. A reception will follow in the Garden Room.
Flora Briggs Gross
Flora (Naomi) Briggs Gross passed away at home in Grandview, WA on January 13, 2011, at the age of 93. Flo, as she was called, was born on Aug 28th 1917 in So Gouldsboro, Maine. She was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Lester P. Gross (Doc); sons William and Rodney Hatch; parents William and Marion Briggs and Brothers Holmes and Homer and Sister Wilhelmina. She is survived by her daughters Marie Noble and Linda Childers and son Robert (Somjai) Hatch: 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren and nine great great grandchildren.
Flo and Doc were avid rock hounders and campers coast to coast. After Doc’s death in 1978 Flo spent many days on the Columbia River salmon fishing by herself. She was an excellent fisherwoman. Flo also loved to hunt and was an expert markswoman. Other pastimes were gardening and sewing.
For years she was chief cook at a large summer camp in Maine. She assisted Doc in his physician’s office in Zillah and was well known for her expertise in caring for others.
Visitation will be on Monday January 17th from 2:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah, WA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 18th at 1:00 pm at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Internment will be at Zillah Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lower Valley Hospice. Valley Hills Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.
Celso Casas
Celso Casas, 75, of Grandview died Thursday, January 13, 2011. Mr. Casas was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and was a longtime resident of the Lower Valley. He was a welder for a farm shop.
Survivors include a son, Jose Casas; a daughter, Yolanda Bissonette, both of Sunnyside; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
No memorial services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home of Sunnyside.
Glenn Dale Snyder Jr.
Glenn Dale Snyder Jr., 81, of Selah died Monday, January 11, 2011 at Selah Convalescent.
Mr. Snyder was born in Sidney, Mont. He worked as a printer for many newspapers.
Survivors include a son, Scott Snyder of Spokane; three daughters, Dolores Moore of Moxee, Peggy Johnson of Lewiston, Idaho, and Hazel Beth Broenneke of Moscow, Idaho; two sisters, Beatrice Seney of Sandpoint, Idaho, and Mary Johnston of Yakima; five grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 16 at the home of Mary Johnston, 1651 E. Pomona Road, Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.
Ruth F. Moreland
Ruth F. Moreland, 94, of Yakima passed away January 9, 2011 in Post Falls, Idaho. Ruth and her late husband, Elbert, had lived in Yakima off and on since 1966. Born in Grafton, Vermont, she and her husband were in Christian ministry for over 50 years serving Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in many states throughout the West as well as Vermont and Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert, and two sons, David and William. Survivors include four sons; James Elbert of Guarai, Tocantines, Brazil, Robert of Wasilla, Alaska, Steven of Covington, Washington, and Joseph of Oak Harbor, Washington, and one daughter, Martha of Yakima, WA; 29 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, plus nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at McKinley Church of Christ, Toppenish, at 11:00 AM on January 29, 2011.
Lynda Lou Brownlee
Lynda Lou Brownlee, 62, of Wapato died Monday, January 10, 2011 in Yakima. Mrs. Brownlee was born in Bellefourch, S.D., and lived most of her life in Wapato. She was an apartment manager.
Survivors include a son, Danny Hicks of Toppenish; a daughter, Michelle Carman of Toppenish; a stepdaughter, Kristy Brownlee of Sunnyside; two brothers, Gary Lipp of Portland and Michael Lipp of Toppenish; a sister, Carol Henry of Vancouver, Wash.; and five grandchildren.
No services are scheduled. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home of Zillah.
Charles Richard Owen
Charles Richard Owen, 65, of Yakima died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Parkside Nursing Home in Union Gap. Mr. Owen was born in Yakima County.
Survivors include a sister, Robin Rudy of Tenino, Wash.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.
Elizabeth Adolph Betsch
Elizabeth Adolph Betsch, 94, of Yakima passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011 at Landmark Care Center. She left this earth to meet her Lord and Saviour.
Elizabeth was born Feb. 21, 1916 in Abernethy, Canada. She came to the United States in 1924, moving to Portland, OR where she attended school for ten years. Elizabeth moved to the Yakima Valley in 1932 where she met and married Julius Betsch Nov. 25, 1933. They made their home in Granger, Toppenish and Yakima.
Elizabeth was a homemaker and worked at the Toppenish Hospital before retiring. She was a lifelong member of the Central Assembly of God Church in Yakima.
She is survived by a son, Richard (Dorothy) Betsch of Yakima; two grandsons, Mick (June) Betsch of Bellevue and Rick (special friend Tammy) Betsch of Naches; one great-granddaughter, Kristin (Barry) Collins of Tieton; a great-great-granddaughter, Makena Collins; two sisters, Katherine Snyder of B.C., Canada and Thelma Peppler of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada; a brother Fred (Agnes) of Canada; and many nieces, nephews, friends and church friends. She will be missed by all who loved her.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Central Assembly of God Church, 701 S. 3rd Ave., with burial to follow in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
