Jesus Jose Soto

Jesus Soto, 59, of Sunnyside went to meet with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 16, 1952 in San Juan del Rio, DGO, Mexico.

He later married Juana Soto on Dec. 25, 1970.

In hopes for a better life for their kids in April 28, 1985 they decided to make Sunnyside their home, where he worked as a farm laborer.

He loved going to cook outs at the Mattawa River.

He enjoyed time with his family and spending most of his time in the little back yard farm that he had.

He had many friends that loved and respected him. He made many cloudy days shine like no other; somewhere and somehow he brought out his joker side of him. He always had a joke ready for anyone that was willing to listen. His good sense of humor made him an inviting person to want to be around with.

He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Juana Soto of Sunnyside; three sons, Manuel (Jessica) Soto and Lorenzo (Norma) Soto, both of Sunnyside, and Jesus Genaro (Brijida) Soto of Prosser; five daughters, Juana (Miguel) Juarez, Cecilia (Evaristo) Gonzalez, Teresa (Cirilo) Alvarado, Dolores Soto and Maria Guadalupe (Julio) Salas, all of Sunnyside; 22 grandchildren; three sisters, Maria E. Soto and Marta (Ruben) Cortez, both of Sunnyside and Eva Soto of Sinaloa, Mexico; and two brothers, Jose (Kati) Soto of Sunnyside and Maximino (Luz) Soto of Sinaloa, Mexico; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death and reunited in heaven before God with his parents, Abelino and Juana Soto; and two brothers, Lorenzo Soto and Jaime Soto

Viewing will be held today, Feb. 24, 2011, from noon to 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Granger, with burial to follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside is in charge of arrangements.

His family lived in various locations in the Yakima Valley area before settling in Mabton for a number of years. They then moved to the Boise Valley in Idaho and farmed for many years. The family moved back to Yakima in 1954.

He enjoyed nature, camping and hiking in the woods. He also enjoyed family get-togethers and fellowship with his friends. He enjoyed deer hunting in his earlier years, especially while the family lived in Idaho. He had a good dry sense of humor even through his final days.

Kenneth W. Cowdrey

Kenneth W. Cowdrey, 68, of Naches , passed away Saturday February 19, 2011, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Ken was born December 21, 1942 in Yakima, WA to John and Wanda Cowdrey. He graduated from Highland High School and Yakima Valley College. He also attended Washington State University. On April 10, 1965, he and Delaine were married and started their life's adventure.

He started his career in AgChem with Chevron Chemical, where he spent 12 years. He then began working for Wilbur-Ellis and was known as "KC" to all in the company. He was constantly "on the road again" during the 34 years he spent with W/E. He retired in December 2009.

Ken enjoyed playing golf, even if Delaine got a lower score. He and Delaine took many great golf vacations with their friends. He also liked touring wineries, wine tasting and building a large collection of wines. Many late afternoons after retirement were spent on the deck, looking over his yard, enjoying a good glass of wine and playing pinochle with Delaine. Yard work was a pastime that he and Delaine both enjoyed.

Many of his lifelong friends got together often for coffee and breakfast. The "old gang" would tell tales on each other and reminisce about the old days.

One of his greatest joys in life was his daughter, Kendall. He always had time for the "Daddy Do's", to lend an ear, and give advice.

Ken is survived by his wife, Delaine; daughter Kendall of Boise, Idaho; sister Kelly Cowdrey- Foster of Olympia, WA.; Aunt Doll Green of Yakima; plus aunts, uncles and cousins; in addition, Delaine's many cousins, and many of his dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Wanda Cowdrey and his in-laws, Reiny and Fran Gohl.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice.

At Ken's request there will be no funeral service or memorial. He always said that his friends would toast him with a good glass of wine or play a round of golf and think of him.
