Thelma J. Ruckman Allen

Our beloved relative and friend Thelma J. Ruckman Allen, age 91, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2011 at the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Thelma was born January 1, 1920, in Allerton Iowa. She spent her early years in Iowa. She graduated from high school in Lewiston, Idaho in 1937. After two years of college she became a teacher. Her first classroom was in a rural school teaching five pupils.

In the fall of 1941, she married Dale Eugene Shouse, a naval flyer. They had three days together before he was shipped out to fight in the Pacific. He was later killed in a plane crash in the Pacific Theatre on October 11, 1942. After Dale’s death, Thelma rejoined her parents in Yakima Washington. She continued teaching and went to school completing her degree, and graduating from Central Washington College in 1946. Graduation was followed by thirty years of teaching, mostly in the Selah School District. She married Roy Ruckman of Sunnyside Washington in 1949. He said to her “Why don’t you marry me and help me raise my two kids?” She did, and they had 37 years together. Roy passed away in January of 1988. In 1995, Thelma married Dr. Albert Allen. When they got married, Dr. Allen told her he wanted to show her the world! Their first trip was a cruise seeing the “Capitols of Europe”. Later they made trips to Hawaii, Alaska, and down the east coast of the U.S. during the fall time.

Thelma needed extra care during the last five years of her life, so she entered Wynwood Assisted Living care facility of Yakima. She was very grateful for that care.

Thelma’s sweet spirit and caring ways touched all who knew her. She had the knack of making one feel special always showing an interest in what was going on in the lives of those around her. She referred to her friends and family as her “dear ones.” Her chuckles and laughter fill our hearts with fond memories.

Thelma is survived by her husband Dr. Albert Allen, her brother Robert Johnson, and stepsons Donald Ray Ruckman and Dr. Paul Allen and their respective families. Her beloved sister Reta Johnson and stepdaughter Sarah West preceded her in death.

Visitation will be Thursday March 31st 3-7 P.M. at Valley Hills Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery. There will be a reception afterwards at the Yakima Alliance Church, 902 South 36th Ave. in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home.
