Harold Martin Crymes
Harold Martin Crymes, age 91 passed March 9th, 2011 in Yakima Washington after a brief illness with his daughter Connie Swan of Yakima at his side.
He was born July 12th 1919 in Edmonds Washington to parents John and Elizabeth Crymes. His father John was an evangelist for the American Sunday School Union and died when Harold was very young. The family then moved to St. Helens Oregon where Harold’s mother found a teaching job. He graduated from St. Helens High School with the class of 1937.
July 1st, 1942, he married Virginia Flippo and started a family in St. Helens Oregon. That same year Harold enlisted in the Sea Bee’s during World War 11 and spent most of his service time in the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska on the island of Adak.
After the war, he returned to St. Helens for a short time. In the late forties, he moved his family to Portland Oregon where he worked a short time for the City of Portland as a plumbing inspector. He later started his own plumbing business (Glencullen Plumbing and Heating) which he operated until 1965. He had two brushes with death at his work when he was buried
twice by collapsing wet soil and was rescued by the Portland Fire Dept. He became weary of the wet slog in Portland and moved east to escape the rain in 1965 and to be close to his Uncle Warren Bunnell of Clarkston Washington. He spent the next forty years of his life working in his cherry orchard, plumbing, and building homes. In 1984 he suffered the loss of his eldest son Dale and six months later his wife Virginia.
In his later years, he delivered meals on wheels and spent his mornings at the coffee shop in downtown Clarkston with his friends where he was affectionately known as “John Trustworthy”.
In 2003, he moved to Yakima to an assisted living complex (Orchard Park) to be close to his daughter Connie and started the last chapter of his life where he reveled in the social setting and spent countless hours visiting with those of his own age. Many times he spoke of how blessed he was to be able to live his final years in this manner.
Harold was a generous man who valued honesty, compassion, and loved his work. He had an incredibly broad sense of humor and had a passion for history.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia, son Dale, and Sister Dr. Ruth Helen Whitten of Honolulu Hawaii. He is survived by a brother, Gordon of Huntington Beach California, his daughter Connie Swan and her husband Mike of Yakima, his son David and wife Gloria of Portland Oregon, three grandsons, Andrew Swan of Zillah and Barry Swan of Omak Washington and Grant Crymes of Portland Oregon. There will be a service at a future date for the family at the graveside in Portland Oregon. In lieu of flowers; donations to your local Meals on Wheels or Cottage in the Meadow Hospice in Yakima Washington would please Harold.
The family would like to thank Cheryl, Tiffany, and Del of the Covenant House and Dr. Al Brady and Cheri of Hospice Memorial for their loving care of our father.

Anita taught remedial reading and phonics to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade children in the West Valley School District for 23 years. Her greatest passion was her family that she dearly loved. Her interests in life included hiking, golfing, playing tennis, sewing, crafts, and reading. Every summer she loved to organize our family reunions at Sunriver, OR. She was an avid shopper and her grandchildren were the biggest recipients. She also loved going out to lunch with friends. She met the love of her life in Yakima and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on October 26, 2010. Their marriage was a very happy one and produced four wonderful children.
