Everett Hilton
Everett Hilton passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Yakima, Washington – he was 79 years old. He was born in Boone County, Arkansas on November 13, 1931 to William Joel Hilton and Selma Elsie Norville Hilton.
Mr. Hilton’s childhood was spent in Arkansas with his parents and twelve brothers and sisters. He left school at an early age to help out on the family’s farm. He met and later married Lucy Ellen Richardson in Marion County, Arkansas on November 19, 1950. They moved back and forth between California, Washington and Arkansas several times before settling in the Yakima Valley. Their marriage was blessed with three children: a daughter Vera and sons Devoe and Devon.
Everett was a hard worker and provided for his own family over the years as a hod carrier, picking fruit, driving truck to deliver hops, potatoes, wheat and hauling logs. He owned and operated his own auto repair garage, and was a bartender for several years at The Billiard Tavern for Ray “Blackie” Freeman for in Tieton, Washington. In 1963 while working for the JR Verly Trucking Company Everett was severely injured in a logging accident in Bingen, Washington that nearly killed him. However, Everett was a fighter and through weeks and weeks of extensive hospital care, he finally recovered although the accident left him disabled. He didn’t let that stop him and in 1968, Everett sold everything, took his family and moved to Granger, Washington where they purchased a 10-acre farm and proceeded to raise hogs, cattle, horses, and herds of hundreds of goats.
It didn’t matter what animals Everett got involved with over the years, he would read everything about them to the point that he could teach others how to raise and care for the animals like an expert.
When he decided to raise rabbits he studied hard and soon everyone was calling him for so much advice, that he and Lucy founded the “Lower Valley Rabbit Club”. They taught other rabbit growers all over the upper and lower valley how to raise and artificially breed their herds. Then every two weeks all year long, Everett and his family would load up their own rabbits (sometimes as many as 300 to 400 at a time) onto their truck and fifth wheel trailer and set about on a route to pick up other grower’s rabbits for market. He and his daughter would travel as far as Moses Lake and all over the Yakima Valley, down into Hermiston, Oregon to then drive the long haul to Aurora, Oregon where they would meet a semi-truck. The cages of rabbits would have to be hand loaded onto the truck that when full would haul from 3 to 5,000 rabbits that would then be driven to El Monte, California for processing.
When Everett wasn’t busy tending his many animals, he along with his good friends Erple “Pappy” Stewart and Mr. Jasper “Jack” Gillihan would be fishing, hunting or attending the sales auctions each week. Everett also loved music and would set for hours and hours with his 8-track and cassette tapes collection playing country western and old time gospel songs.
Everett was preceded in death by his wife Lucy of 44 years of marriage, parents William Joel Hilton and Selma Elsie Norvell Hilton, six brothers Joel Lee, Auther James, Bobby Wesley, Billy Ellis, William Newt, John Wesley and two sisters Dorothy Lee Haney and Betty June Schutz and step son Marvin Dale Harris.
He is survived by his present wife of 15 years Ellen M. (Harris) Hilton of Yakima, brother Felix Ray Hilton of Missouri and sisters Reba Elsie Greable of Tieton, Wash., Martha Ann (husband Dennis) Poe of Paragould, Ark., and Bonnie Jo Hilton of Moxee, Wash. Everett and Ellen participated in the Mall Walk-A-Mile events and received blue ribbons for the many many miles they walked around the mall. They would sit with their friends, drink coffee and talk about the “old days”. Everett and Ellen, spent a lot of time traveling all over the United States and up into Alaska. Everett loved working out in his flowers and had roses of many colors. Everywhere that he went, he made friends and everyone enjoyed being around him.
He leaves behind his children, Vera Liebert of Yakima, Devoe Everett Hilton of Yakima, and Devon (wife Miriam) Hilton of Vancouver, Wash., as well as his step-sons Rick Harris of Tieton and Michael Harris of Cowiche. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren Crystal (husband Mike) Myers of Kentucky, David (wife Laura) Liebert of Yakima, Lisa (husband Keith) Wick of Yakima, Troy Samuel (wife Tiffany) Hilton of Yakima, Dillon Wayne Hellwell of Moses Lake, William Jonah Smith of the Seattle area, and Benjamin and Travis Hilton of Vancouver, Wash.
