Ernest Norman Gilliam
Ernest Norman Gilliam from Moxee, Washington, passed away at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital on May 9th, 2011. He was 71 years old.
Ernest was born to Alfred and Wilma Gilliam of Princeton, Idaho on May 19th, 1939. He had an amazing childhood growing up on 80 acres of paradise where his family grew fresh fruit and vegetables in their huge gardens. Here also is where "Norm" would haul water for the family from the hand-dug well his father had made. Many years later, he would often talk about the "good old days" when he and his family would cut and split at least 25 cords of wood to keep the old wood-burning stove going through the cold winters. Ernest graduated from high school in 1958, and then enlisted in the US Army from 1960-1963.
In 1968 he settled in the Yakima Valley. In 1972 Ernest was a DJ at KAAR 104.1 FM while he also worked at Montgomery Wards & Shultz Furniture until he started with the Yakima School District in 1981.
He loved to spend time with his friends and family and was always one to have a joke for any occasion. A self-proclaimed "Jack of all trades and a master of most," he could fix just about anything that was broken from appliances to automobiles and everything in between. He did work for many people in the Valley and was quick to learn as well as to teach. He graduated from the "School of Hard Knocks," but still maintained his sense of humor and was generous with his time -- offering to lend a hand when needed.
He will be greatly missed.
Ernest was preceded in death by his brother Gary R. Gilliam, his father Alfred E. Gilliam, his wife Sherry J. Gilliam, and his mother Margaret W. Gilliam. He is survived by his siblings: Raymond Gilliam and wife Suzie of Dallas, Oregon, Karen Tish and husband Harold of Caldwell, Idaho; children: Michael S. Gilliam and wife Roxanne of Tacoma, Timothy S. Gilliam of Moxee, Todd N. Cady and wife Michele of Spokane, and Donna L. Harris and husband Jeff of Seabeck, as well as nine grandchildren.
