Rolf Lemp
Rolf Lemp, retired physician, passed away quietly Monday with his family at his side after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marie and William Lemp, and his older sister Miriam Morris. Rolf leaves behind his wife Patricia (of Yakima), sister Ingrid (of Portland), and daughters Melissa Lemp (husband, Bill Glenski) and Jessica Millar (husband, Mark Peterson). Rolf also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth, Megan and Paul Glenski (of Yakima) and Zachary Peterson (of Mt. View, CA).
Rolf was the first member of his German immigrant family born in the United States in Newark, New Jersey. He graduated from Georgetown University, majoring in both Chemistry and Philosophy. He married Pauline Ann Harrison in 1959, and then attended Medical School at Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He completed his training in General Practice, currently referred to as Family Medicine.
He practiced family medicine from his home office while he and Pauline raised their two daughters. The family moved to Los Altos in 1974 to pursue western dreams with Rolf in private practive as well as teaching future physicians at Stanford University. After Rolf and Pauline divorced, Rolf concentrated his focus on Psychiatry, his true medical passion. He worked for the California Department of Corrections helping inmates deal with the anguish of mental health disturbances and chemical dependency.
In 2006, he met and married his best friend, Patricia (Fisher) in Sonora, California. In 2007, they both retired and moved to Yakima, Washington to be near family and close friends. They shared many wonderful times together playing with their furry children (dogs, Jake and Charlie) and traveling across the U.S.
Rolf's proudest accomplishment was achieving sobriety at age 58. He was grateful for the insight "Bill's Friends" gave him over the years. He especially loved his two sponsors, Art and Dan.
Rolf was the type of person who lit up a room. At 6'7" he was noticed by everyone when he entered a room but it was his lively intellect and positive outlook that drew people to him. His adventurous spirit took him across the country on multiple road trips. He loved meeting people from different places, camping and being outdoors and exploring the wilderness. Over his life he backpacked and hiked. When disabilities limited his mobility he visited his beloved mountains on his ATV, riding the trails with family and friends. He had an amazing sense of direction and loved to explore. He was also a Civil War enthusiast and greatly admired Abraham Lincoln.
Oh Rolf, how we will miss your laugh, your inquisitive nature and your pursuit of understanding the human spirit. We love you; please rest peacefully.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the Yakima Humane Society. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
