Joan Marie (Hartman) Mills
Joan Marie (Hartman) Mills experienced the joy of seeing Jesus face-to-face after a battle with cancer on Sunday, January 31, 2010. She was born on August 6, 1929 to John and Myrtle Hartman in Portus, Kansas. Her early years were characterized by the hardship brought about by the Dust Bowl. As a child of about 10 her father sold what he had left of his farm and moved West in search of a better life for his family. They eventually settled in Turlock, California until Joan headed to Seattle Pacific College (now University) where she graduated with a degree in English and a minor in Education.
Joan's teaching career began as she taught elementary school for two years in Wapato, Washington. In 1954 she married Harlan Mills and moved to Pullman as Harlan completed his degree at WSU. She taught one year there before putting her profession on hold for motherhood. In 1956 the Mills family moved to Prosser as Harlan took a job at IAREC. Joan taught part-time as three more children were added to the family. In 1965 she was able to return fully to the classroom and was a fixture at the elementary school in the Prosser School District until her retirement in 1989.
In many ways Joan's desire to teach was a calling. With a great faith in God and a love for the church she taught Sunday School, Good News clubs and Bible School. Her life revolved around loving Jesus and serving the church. She was a key member of the Prosser Church of the Nazarene serving on the Church Board and fully involved in the mission program. She held various leadership positions with the area Christian Women's Club.
Joan was a social person anxious to open her home for fellowship or meet with friends at various camps and retreats.
Upon retirement she was able to find great joy in traveling the world. Among her favorite trips were a trip to the Holy Land, a journey to Greece and Western Turkey to trace the footsteps of the Apostle Paul, a Work & Witness trip to Peru and a visit to Australia and New Zealand with a group of Christians. Her personal interests were reading, singing, cooking, preserving food, camping, shopping, arranging flowers and playing board games. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Harlan Mills of Prosser, Washington; brother Gerald Harman (Ruth) of Boise, Idaho; sister Delores Simmons (Merlyn) of Warm Beach, Washington; sister Mary Smith of Warm Beach, Washington; brother Bob Hartman (Judy) of Puyallup, Washington; son Chuck Mills of Vienna, Virginia; daughter Barbara Galloway (Greg) of Nampa, Idaho; daughter Vicki Shaw (Scott) of Bremerton, Washington; daughter Jan (Al) Larson of Grandview, Washington.
