Margaret Irene (LaDu) Larsen
Our cherished Wife, M.O.M., Gramma and GREAT-Gramma; Margaret Irene (LaDu) Larsen went home to be with our Lord on December 30, 2008 at the age of 76, after a brief battle with cancer. Margaret was at her home in Yakima, surrounded by her loving husband and family.
Margaret was born in Portland, Oregon on March 28, 1932, the fifth child of six to parents Elizabeth Esther O’Laughlin LaDu and George James LaDu.
Margaret grew up in Tillamook, OR and Portland, OR; graduating from Immaculata Academy and Seattle University where she met her soul mate and beloved husband of 53 years, Jack Gordon Larsen. They were married June 18, 1955, raised six children and have 13 grandchildren and one great-grand child.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents George and Elizabeth, as well as her brothers James and George LaDu. She is survived by her husband Jack Larsen; her daughters Jana (Gary) Hoggins of Port Orchard, WA, Debra (Conrad) Hagstrom of Port Orchard, WA, Lynn Powers of Bozeman, MT and Julie Querido of Beaverton, OR; her sons Mark Larsen of Bremerton, WA and Cris (Susan) Larsen of Bremerton, WA; grand-children Matthew (Amanda) and Carl Hoggins; Joel, Mike, Patty and Treva Hagstrom; Michelle, Holly and Jennifer Powers; Arnel, Michael, Alex, and Elizabeth Querido; and great granddaughter Nora Hoggins; her brother Robert (Liz) LaDu of Portland, OR and sisters Terese Klein of King City, OR and Janet (Tsuyoshi) Miyazaki of Washington, D.C.; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Margaret saw God’s beautiful love reflected in her and felt it encompass them. She always had a warm smile that shone from her eyes, with kind words and open arms for everyone. She had an ear and a hug for all, and by the grace of God, was an encouragement to many.
As well as being a loving wife, mother, gramma, great-gramma, sister, daughter and aunt, Margaret was a teacher.
She taught in Portland, OR, Seattle, Lynnwood, Bremerton and Yakima, WA. After retiring from teaching she substituted for awhile, before working as a realtor in Bremerton and Yakima. Margaret was very involved in the Catholic Childhood Society, Altrusa and volunteered over 7000 hours with Yakima Memorial Hospital and Hospice as a bereavement counselor. Margaret has always been very involved in her church and could usually be found planning, setting up, cooking and cleaning for many events going on, which she thoroughly enjoyed and felt it a gift to participate. Margaret lived life to the fullest! Margaret served as a board member on the Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Board. She was very creative with her photography, painting, knitting, needle point, sewing, crocheting, ceramics and decorating. Margaret also loved to cook and entertain for others.
In her ‘spare’ time, she and her husband, Jack, loved to take spontaneous day trips to explore. They also loved to golf, fish, walk, bike, and visit with friends and family. Margaret loved to read and play cards – ALL kinds of cards – bridge, pinochle, bridge, crazy rummy, bridge, crossword puzzles, bonkety-bonk, swimming, life guarding when she was younger, being at the ocean, the mountains, Mariners, watching ice skating and game shows. Margaret was part of the Poulsbo Bridge Group for over 25 years and was involved in several local bridge groups and coordinated many bridge tournaments in Yakima, but most of all loved our Lord, her family, friends and hugs.
Margaret will be missed by all who know and love her, but we will remember her with a smile in our hearts, knowing she is watching over us. We have all been blessed and made better by knowing and loving her, we look forward to seeing her again when we’re together in Heaven.
