Merleen Watkins
Merleen Oliver Watkins passed away after a goodbye kiss in the arms of her life long partner and loving husband, Ted Watkins, on January 14, 2010. Merleen fought a brave ten-year battle against Alzheimer’s and more recently a fight against cancer.
Born October 24, 1930 in Pike County, Missouri, Merleen’s family moved to Ellensburg, WA, when she was five years old. Soon thereafter she lost her mother to a case of pneumonia. Merleen went to live with relatives in Yakima and was raised into young adulthood meeting and then dating Ted Watkins in 1947. Merleen graduated from Yakima High School in 1949 and soon after married her sweetheart, Ted. That summer Ted and Merleen moved to Sweethome, OR in search of work. A job at sawmill provided a tough living, but happy existence in post war America, and an opportunity to begin their family and provide a living for the next 15 years.
A job opportunity at Boise Cascade brought the Watkins family back to Yakima where they settled in permanently and continued to raise their family. Merleen worked in the children’s department at JC Penney Co. in Yakima and retired in 1992 after 24 years of dedicated employment.
Merleen is survived by her husband, Ted Watkins of Yakima; her four children, Ron Watkins of Yakima, Dave Watkins of Hamilton, MT, Connie Mayer of Hamilton, MT, and Darla Goodall of Selah; her brother, Claude Junior Oliver of Yakima; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
One of Merleen’s many joys in life was vacationing with Ted at different destinations around the world. One memorable highlight (or lowlight) was after a trip to the Dominican Republic. Upon returning home, Merleen began to unpack her suitcase, reached in and grabbed a pair of socks. The socks turned out to be a stowaway tarantula that had hid in her suitcase while on vacation. She was so startled that she hit herself in the head, tarantula in hand, and threw it back in the suitcase, slamming it shut. A local television station heard about the tarantula and did a story on it, giving Merleen her fifteen minutes of fame. The tarantula ended up at the pet store.
Merleen recently celebrated her 79th birthday with numerous family and friends. She was so happy to see everyone! The smile on her face and the sparkle in her eye were a lasting memory that we will all hold dearly in our hearts forever. Merleen was a wonderful lady in every way and even though she will be dearly missed, we know that she is in a much better place.
A special thanks to Hospice Home Care and the staff at Memorial Hospital who helped so much through this very tough and emotional time.
Viewing will be Monday from 1 until 7 p.m. at the Yakima Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home. Graveside Funeral Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Terrace Heights Memorial Park.
