James Harold Bartheld
Jim passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at the age of 77. He was born on June 17, 1932 to Harold and Ruth Bartheld in Lansing, Iowa. At the age of 14, his family moved to Washington, settling in the Yakima Valley in 1946. Jim attended Moxee High School graduating in 1950 then served four years in the United States Coast Guard in Mukilteo, Washington as a lighthouse attendant. While working full time and raising a family he continued his education at Central Washington State College graduating with a Bachelor's degree in business. Jim continued his employment with Northern Pacific Railroad until January 1963 when he found his true calling as a salesman for Lay & Nord, a locally owned automotive parts store. Jim called on numerous accounts throughout Central Washington. He knew that customer service was vital to success.
Throughout his 47 years at Lay & Nord, (later known as Carquest), Jim developed lasting friendships and loyal customers. These relationships meant so much more than just business. He often shared his homemade salsa, Tuesday afternoon lunch dates and frequent camping trips with those he considered "extended" family.
Just like his father, Jim was passionate about his gardening. He often planted an abundance of vegetables and was eager to make deliveries of tomatoes, peppers, and his prize winning onions to his family and friends even if that meant a trip to UPS to ship to other places. In fact, he shipped onions from his garden to a friend and co-worker in Spokane the day before his passing.
Jim loved the outdoors, he spent many weekends snowmobiling and camping with his family along with being an avid fisherman. He preferred salt water fishing in Sekiu, Westport, Neah Bay and Ilwaco. In his later years, he especially enjoyed salmon fishing in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia. When Jim fished, he would often stay out dusk to dawn unless the boat caught it's limit, even if the kids got sea-sick. Sharing stories of these trips with friends was more important than the amount of fish caught.
As his grandkids grew older and started participating in sports, weekends of snowmobiling grew less. He would never miss an ice hockey game of his grandsons even if that meant traveling throughout the Northwest. He was passionate and an avid supporter of all the grandchildrens' sporting events whether that meant traveling to Selah for softball games, or East Valley for football and basketball games. You could always find him on the field or in the stands praising his children and grandchildren and grumbling about the refereeing.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Maureen of 23 years, his former wife and friend Pat Hunter, sister Marilyn Lawrence and husband James, sons Rick Bartheld and wife Jaci, James "Mike" Bartheld and wife Cheryl, daughter Carrie Wane and husband David, stepson Mike Hull, stepdaughters Kris French, Tracie Fowler and husband Jason, and Tari Lange and husband Justin, sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Ruth Bartheld and stepson Steve Hull.
Jim was driven to surround himself with friends and family. He never missed a family gathering near and far or an opportunity to share stories with friends. The magnitude of Jim's presence, wisdom and friendship will be missed by all. Memories of the fun we shared will be treasured always.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at East Valley Reformed Church, 7203 Mieras Road, Yakima, WA at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 16, 2010. A reception will follow the service in the fellowship hall.
