Norma L. Krieger
On March 27, 2010 Norma Barr Krieger (89) our precious mom, grandma, and great grandma took Jesus' hand and stepped into heaven. Norma was born January 7, 1921 in Arriba, Colorado to Ralph and Anna Walters Barr.
Norma graduated from 8th grade May 1935, valedictorian of her class. She served as senior class secretary and graduated from Arriba High School in 1939. She found work as a housekeeper, maid, and nanny. While she worked in Denver her family bought a farm and moved to Outlook Wa. in 1942.
After finishing her employment in Denver, Norma joined her family for a short time then moved to Rainier, Or. She and her sister Arlene ferried back and forth to work at Longview Fiber.
In 1943 Norma entered nursing school at St. Elizabeth in Yakima. Tragedy struck that fall when her sister Arlene came down with polio. The disease was so dreaded the polio patients' mothers, sisters, and student nurses willing to care for them were taught the Sister Kinney hot pack method and overseen by a registered nurse. Norma cared for her sister and several other patients including a young man from Tieton, James Krieger.
They married on May 3, 1945 and owned and ran Kriegers' Grocery Store in Zillah along with Jim's parents George and Rose Krieger. They had two daughters Norma Kay and Carolin.
Norma participated in Biz-Pro (business and professional womens club). Jim and Norma supported the work of the March of Dimes for polio for many years. Norma went door to door with the Mothers' March against Polio. She was a long time attendee of the Zillah Nazarene Church where she served the Lord for many years. She taught children's Sunday School for a number of years and also served as Missionary Society president.
Norma had an uncanny ability to light up a room with her dimpled smile. She was well known for the breakfasts she served at ghastly early hours to her husband and his fishing buddies. She continued this practice for her sons-in-law and their hunting partners.
The Kriegers sold their store in the spring of 1966. Norma worked at Stadelman's in Zillah until she retired in 1983.
