Roxine Fuerst

Roxine Idella Padgham was born October 8, 1917 on the family farm East of Sunnyside, WA to Charles Herbert Padgham and Gertrude Clairice Cochran Padgham.

She attended school at Washington Grade School on Factory Road through the 7th grade. Because the outlying country schools had been consolidated and brought into town, the 8th grade was spent at Lincoln School in Sunnyside. She attended 3 years at Sunnyside High School. The High School burned in March of 1933, so Roxine moved to Modesto, California and finished her senior year there.

Following graduation she returned to Sunnyside to live with her parents until 1940. It was there, on March 31, 1940, Roxine married Leonard Joseph Fuerst. Together they made their home on a small farm on the Wilson Highway north of Grandview. Leonard passed away in 1975 and Roxine remained on the farm until 1987 when because of illness, she sold the homeplace and resided in Sunnyside. In 2006 she moved to Orchard House Assisted Living in Grandview, WA. Mom was truly happy living at Orchard House where she was Resident Ambassador. She enjoyed the devotion of, and spoiling by, the entire staff. Mom joked she was in pretty good shape for the shape she was in. Roxine loved her LORD and spread HIS love and teaching whenever she could. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, listening to gospel music and hearing a good sermon. She was a prolific quilter and every child and grandchild has a quilt made especially for him or her. An accomplished seamstress, she also enjoyed needlework of all kinds.

We cannot say enough about the great care Mom was given by the staff of Orchard House, from her special diet to her early morning exercise routine, they were there for her. We are eternally grateful for their tender care of Mom. Memorials may be made to the Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church in Roxine's name.

Rev. Robert Leroy Smith

UNION GAP - Rev. Robert "Bob" L. Smith went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, March 13, 2010 with his son & daughter-in-law, daughter, brother, nephew and his three granddaughters who loved him very much, at his bedside. Other wonderful people had been with him including a grandson & his wife, son-in-law & a dear friend. He lived a long and full life with no major illnesses until the last month of his life.

Bob was born November 2, 1921 to Roy August & Emma Gladys (Armstrong) Smith in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado. In 1959 he and his beloved wife Ruby made their home in Union Gap, where he remained until his death. Their homestead remains in the family.

Bob's life long romance began when he met and married Ruby Jewell (Eastridge) Smith on April 28, 1942. Bob lost Ruby to cancer on January 3, 2002, and life was never quite the same. He mourned her passing until the day the Lord called him home.

His employment included work with the CCC, Boeing and Montgomery Ward, he also had gun shops in Selah and Wapato. Fifty-two years ago he and Ruby founded the Wapato Bible Baptist Church, and he served as Pastor for 27 years, this church is still preaching the gospel today. He worked 25 years in maintenance at the Wapato School District, also driving buses for them. Together Bob & Ruby had a foster home for several years, taking in and sharing their love with 38 foster children. Bob later served as Camp Chaplain at Naco West and Maple Grove Resorts for 17 years until Ruby's health would not allow traveling over the mountains weekly. Bob was a charter member of Thousand Trails later known as Naco West.

Bob enjoyed doing leatherwork, rebuilding guns, and making custom knives from old files and saw blades. In more recent years he and his son Gary built Model "T's" from rusty pieces of nothing and restored them to original specifications. Bob's favorite was a 1924 Pick-up that he named after his beloved wife, he named it the "Ruby J." Ruby was born in 1924. He showed his Model T's in parades and car shows acquiring several trophies and awards. Bob was a true craftsman in all areas. Bob & Ruby took four years out of their busy lives to build from the frame up a 40-foot motor home which they resided in for many years and he continued to live in it up until his death.

Bob was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church where he had so many wonderful friendships. Bob also filled the pulpit on occasion at Calvary as well as First Baptist Church of Union Gap. Bob loved the Lord and never stopped witnessing to people or serving the Lord. It was his desire that all should come to know the Lord as their personal savior and spend eternity in Heaven.

Bob is survived by three children: Norma Briggs and husband John of Wapato, Gary Smith and wife Shelly of Union Gap, Mark Smith and wife Brittany of Vancouver, four brothers, George Smith of LaCenter, Wash., Ernie & Larry Smith of Yakima, and Ray Smith of Texas, four sisters, Vera Thirtyacre and Ruby Sartin of Yakima, Wanda Howard of Zillah, and Betty Harmon of Brush Prairie.

Grandchildren Jeff, Michael & Brad Briggs all of Wapato, Bridgett Boyd of Terrace Heights, Janea Allred of Union Gap, and Becky Denman of Kennewick, Felicia, Cooper & Tegan Smith of Vancouver. Great-grandchildren Cody, Casey & Caleb Briggs, TJ & Dominique Briggs, Lilly & Gracie Briggs, Dane, Coby & Ally Boyd, Delia & Zaylee Allred and Cheyenne and Michael Johnson, special sisters-in-law, Ruth Hafner of Tucson, AZ, Sadie Eastridge of Yakima, and Ina Smith of Curlew. Also, survived by a special foster child, Larry Perry of Stratford, OK, who they picked up from the hospital at three days old and kept him until he was 11. Larry stayed in contact with Bob until his passing. Also, he leaves behind several nieces & nephews. He also had a special friendship with his great-grand dog, a mini-doxie, "Jelly Bean", she brought him great joy and happiness.

He is preceded in death by his parents and three other siblings, Ed, Don, and Les Smith.

The family wishes to extend sincere thanks to his church family at Calvary Baptist Church and to the wonderful, caring nurses on the 4th floor of Yakima Regional Hospital, especially Jill and to Sherry on the 2nd floor, who saw us through his end of life. Also, to Parkside Care Center, even though he was only there four days, the care he received was wonderful, thank you Karin, RN, Liz, RN, Tammy & Becky, and all those unnamed who had a part in his care including his granddaughter, Janea Allred of Dietary.

At Bob's wishes he was cremated and burial will take place at Tahoma Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Service celebrating Rev. Robert L. Smith's life on Saturday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 2706 Second Street, Union Gap (behind the old Hill's Cafe.) Services will be conducted by Pastor Darrell Briggs of Calvary Baptist Church. A luncheon will follow for family & friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church College Fund for Bethany Briggs & April Rodgers, these were students he loved and supported through his Church while they attend Heartland Baptist Bible College in Oklahoma City.

Valley Hills Funeral Home & Crematory in Yakima is entrusted with arrangements.

Our dearest grandpa, no other like him, wonderful, loving, helpful, inspiring. You were always there for us no matter what and we will never forget you. You left behind a legacy that we promise to uphold. Thank you for showing us Jesus through you. Now rest in peace with grandma & the Lord and we promise to continue serving Jesus. We loved you so much grandpa. We will see you and grandma in Heaven one day. Love, Bridgett, Janea & Becky.
