Marvin LeRoy Johnstone
On April 11th, 2010 Marvin Leroy Johnstone passed away in the loving arms of his wife while at his Selah home, following an extended illness. Marvin was 75 years old.
Marvin was born in Wapato on Sept. 22, 1934 to George and Ines (Adams, Sliger) Johnstone. He attended Toppenish high school and was married to Vanettia Reeves Dec. 21, 1952. Marvin joined the United State Air Force in 1953 where he was in the 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron and served as an airplane technician. He was medically retired in 1970. After retirement Marvin and Vanettia moved to Selah where they raised their three daughters.
Marvin had a strong testimony of his Savior Jesus Christ. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many capacities. Marvin loved nature and spent a lot of time outside in his yard planting trees and flowers which provided a beautiful refuge for many different types of birds that he loved to sit and watch. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family.
He was survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Vanettia Johnstone; a brother Roger Sliger; three daughters and their husbands, Sandra & Dan Ogburn, Teresa & Mike Rainford, and Lisa & Travis Wilson; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Barnick (Roger), Holly Carlson, Bonnie Ogburn, Hiedi Keeling (Brian), Joshua Rainford, (Elizebeth), Kyle Rainford, Cameron Rainford, Christon Wilson, Jared Wilson, Mitchell Wilson; and 6 great-grandchildren, Rachel Carlson, Kylee Rainford, Luke and Hannah Keeling, Lyla Barnick and Joshua Hogan (Wilson). He was proceeded in death by his mother, Ines Johnstone; his father, George Johnstone; and a grandson, Travis Lehi Wilson.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010 in The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints, 702 N. First Street, Selah, Washington, viewing will be held at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. in the Relief Society Room. Interment will be in the Wenas Cemetery under the direction of Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima.
Betty A. Alvord
YAKIMA - Betty Alvord died Sunday, April 11, 2010 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home just 3 weeks shy of her 88th birthday. She was born May 7, 1922 in Boone Co., MO to Luther and Nellie Proctor Armstrong. She graduated from high school in Columbia, MO in 1941 then attended and graduated from Business College there. She then worked for Farm Security in several counties in northern Missouri. After the end of the war she moved to Boulder, CO. She married Leland Stuart Alvord in Boulder on April 16, 1948. While he was finishing his degree at the University of Colorado, she worked as a secretary earning her PHT (Putting Hubby Through) Degree. In 1950 they moved to Nebraska, later moving to Selah, WA in 1953.
She loved to garden and always had a large garden of both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed flowers and loved to make arrangements that she displayed in her home. She also loved to sew and enjoyed making her own clothes. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she volunteered in various capacities as long as she was able. She was an avid reader and loved to discuss issues and ideas.
Her husband Stuart preceded her in death in Aug. 2006. After her husband's death she made her home with her daughter in Selah. She missed her husband dearly and was lonely without him. However, she remained active as long as she could, going on several vacations and weekly shopping and lunch trips with her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter Lynne of Selah and two sisters, Frances Corcoran of Georgetown, KY and Dorothy Armstrong of Columbia, MO, and one brother, Jim Armstrong of Columbia, MO.
She will be greatly missed.
Viewing will be on Wednesday, April 14 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. Burial will be at 12:00 noon on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, and funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Yakima, Washington.
Everette "Chuck" Charles Nicholson
Chuck was born under a shade tree near Mountain Grove, Missouri 9/25/1927 to Lewis Nicholson & Harriet Emmaline Nicholson. He has made Yakima his home since 1947. Everette had been a truck driver for Durettes Moving and Storage for about 35 years. He also worked for the parks dept. and in the orchards all over the valley. He loved his God, his family and his work. He is survived by his wife Charyne (Cherry) Nicholson whom he married in 1979, his daughter-in-law Aezel and children, of Tacoma, Carol Goetz and her children, Linda McKinley, her children, John Nicholson, and his daughter all of Yakima; brother Randy Peterson of Yakima, sister Pauline Axilson of Utah; 8 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his sons Claude Nicholson and Patrick Nicholson.
Chuck was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1981. He has been an active member of the Tera-Vista congregation since. His friends are confident that the next time they see him it will be in a Paradise earth, maybe with guitar in hand riding on a horse singing a song in praise of Jehovah.
Memorial services to be held at the Kingdom Hall on 96th and Summitview Ave., April 24th at 2 PM.
Jerry M. Beatty
Jerry M. Beatty, age 75, passed away on April 7, 2010 in Yakima. He was born in Blue Rapids, Kansas on November 1, 1934 to Paul and Lois (Regan) Beatty.
Mr. Beatty graduated from Yakima High School in 1954. He was a good football and baseball player and was an avid hunter. He served in the Armed Forces, and worked with his father for many years with Paul and Jerry Beatty Excavating. He enjoyed helping organize his grade school and high school reunions; it brought him great joy.
He was a naturally funny guy and was always the life of the party. Anybody who was a friend always knew that happy hour starts at 4:00 p.m. at the Beatty residence. He will be missed by all.
He is survived by his son Jerry M. Beatty, Jr.; his niece Wendy Chrisman; second cousin Fran Smith; aunt Leila Ziegler, and his best friend Collen Lopez.
A celebration of his life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday April 24, 1919 at Broadmoor Court.
Alta Marie Van Cleave
MOSES LAKE - Alta Marie Van Cleave, 92, of Moses Lake, WA, passed away on April 7, 2010.
Alta was born on September 25, 1917 in South Bend, NE. She married Elmer Van Cleave on June 15, 1933 in Greeley County, NE at 16 years of age. In 1937 Alta and her two children followed her husband to Washington State. After the birth of her third child she worked outside the home in fruit packing sheds. Mostly she was a housewife, and worked on the ranch she owned with her husband in Buena. After retiring and selling the ranch in 1996 and the death of her husband in 2002, Alta lived in Yakima and Moses Lake, WA. Alta was active in the grange in Buena since March of 1943 and held many local and state offices. She loved baking, sewing, canning and being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother.
Alta leaves behind two sons, Donald Duane Van Cleave of New Brighton, MN and Eddie Joe Van Cleave of Hermiston, OR; one daughter, Shirley Ann Fuchs of Moses Lake, WA; twelve grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janice Scott and Joyce Razey and one brother, Keith Boob, all of Washington State.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, three brothers and one grandchild. Alta spent 92 years of her life living and enjoying her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.
There will be a memorial gathering at 2:00 p.m. on April 24, 2010 at the Buena Grange and private burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday April 26, 2010.
Ruby J. DeFrance
Ruby J. DeFrance, 82, of Yakima died Wednesday.
Mrs. DeFrance was born in Chinook, Mont., and lived in Davenport, Wash., for several years before moving back to Montana. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She moved to Yakima in 2009.
Survivors include her husband, Robert DeFrance of Helena, Mont.; a daughter, Cynthia Luckey of Yakima; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at a later date.
