Donita Sandberg

Donita K. Sandberg age 63 spent Easter with her Savior following a car accident April 3, 2010. She was born Donita Kay Stokesberry to Dortha and Bob Stokesberry on September 15, 1946 in Twin Falls, ID.

She grew up in Southern Idaho graduating from Valley High School in 1964 and then she attended The College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls for business accounting. She moved to Seattle, WA for a short time where she worked at the Seattle University Bookstore before returning to Idaho. She was introduced to a young farmer named David Sandberg from Grandview, WA by her aunt and uncle. The two were married shortly after on January 24, 1976 at the Twin Fall First Church of the Nazarene. The two made their home in Grandview on the family farm. She was a lifelong member of the Nazarene Church, 30 year member of the Grandview Grange, a devoted wife and mother. She owned Fashion Crossroads in Grandview from 1990-1993. She loved to sing; spending many years in the church choir. In her spare time she loved crossword puzzles, stamping, as well as jigsaw puzzles, in addition to many other hobbies.

She is survived by husband, David C. Sandberg of Grandview, WA; son, Tracy Sandberg and his wife Tara of Bonners Ferry, ID; granddaughter Erin Sandberg whom she was excited to meet; a brother, Melvin Stokesberry and his wife Sue of Twin Falls, ID; a niece, Tara Stokesberry of Boise, ID; and a nephew, Shaun Stokesberry of Twin Falls, ID.

She was preceded in death by her mother Dortha Faye (Long) Stokesberry and her father Robert Nelson Stokesberry.

A memorial service will be held at the Grandview Church of the Nazarene at 2 pm. on Saturday, April 17, 2010. Arrangements are in the care of Valley Hills Funeral Home.

Barbara Thorp

Barbara Jean Thorp (Hall) joined her Father in Heaven and her loving husband on Monday, April 5, 2010. Barbara was born December 28, 1939 in Grand Junction, Colorado to Myron and Velora Hall.

She graduated from Eagle County High School. Due to her brothers health condition, her parents moved to Toppenish. On one of her visits to Toppenish she met her husband to be, Bayless (Bud) Thorp. They were married July 21, 1961 where they resided in Toppenish for the remaining years of their life.

Barbara and her family were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1977. Being a member of the LDS church she served in various callings. She especially enjoyed working with the children and her last calling in the library. Family was first and the most important children to her were her own children and grandchildren. She knew many of the community members because of her work and association with Sea-First National Bank from where she retired. After retirement she held various jobs including Valley Hill Mortuary and once again working with children at EPIC. She will be greatly missed for her tender and caring heart and the ability to listen.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Bud, in June 2009; her parents Myron and Velora Hall; her brother Kenneth; and a grandchild, Angelina Crook.

She is survived by her children, Tim Thorp of Toppenish, Tracie (Mike) Crook and their children, Jordan, Sierra, and Makayla of Moxee; and Shannon (Isabelle) and their children Ashleigh, Devin, and Monique of Moxee; a sister, Myra Reynolds of Toppennish; and 1 niece and 2 nephews.

Visitation will be at 1-5 pm. on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah, WA. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am. on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Toppenish LDS Church in Toppenish.

Burial will follow at the Zillah City Cemetery in Zillah.

Hazel Schmella

CHANDLER, AZ - Hazel V. Schmella, a long time Toppenish/Zillah resident passed away on April 4, 2010 at Park Regency Care Facility in Chandler, Arizona. She was surrounded by her loving family having succumbed from a short battle with cancer.

Hazel was born on May 5, 1922 in Viking, Alberta, Canada and came to the United States with her parents Tom and Mina (Jett) King shortly thereafter. She was raised and educated in Toppenish and graduated from Toppenish High School, class of 1939. After graduation, she became a cosmetologist having graduated from Byrd's Beauty School in Yakima, WA in 1940. Her first beauty salon was in Wapato, Washington.

She married Fred B. Schmella on April 25, 1943. Hazel and Fred raised four children in Washington and Arizona. She is survived by two sons, Fred T. (Patricia) of Toppenish, WA and Warren R. (Cheri) of Tempe, AZ and two daughters, Rose Unruh of Chandler, AZ and Norma (Dave) Paredes of Phoenix, AZ. Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Fred B. in January 1991. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carol Lynn on February 9, 1945. Hazel had 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Hazel worked as a cosmetologist until her retirement at age 70. After retirement, she took up the game of golf and spent most of her time at Mt. Adams Country Club and golf courses in Tempe, AZ. Hazel held many offices with the Ladies club at the Mt. Adams Golf Course. She loved traveling around the Washington area to play in various tournaments with her golf friends. She also enjoyed being a "snowbird, " traveling to Arizona to escape the Washington winters for the past eight years where she stayed with her daughter, Rose. Graveside services will be held on April 10, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. at the Zillah Cemetery. Valley Hills Funeral Home, 607 2nd Ave., Zillah, WA is in charge of the arrangements.

Anna Lu Johnson

Anna Lu Johnson passed away on April 5, 2010 in Yakima, Washington. She was a long time Valley resident. She and her husband, Phillip, came to the Northwest from Rushville, Neb. after the war to work and raise their family and to be close to her mother and father, Frank and Anna Day, of Yakima.

She is survived by her three sons, Phillip, Clayton and Aaron and their families, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Phillip; her mother and father, Frank and Anna; her sister, Wilma Johnson; and her two brothers, Francis (Tony) Day and Tom Day.

She will be laid to rest on Sat., April 17, at 12 noon at West Hills Memorial Park in Yakima, WA. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Baptist Church (Horn Rd) in Benton City on Saturday afternoon.

Albert 'Barney' Alexander Fife

YAKIMA - Albert Alexander Fife, 72, passed away on April 3, 2010. He was born November 25, 1937 in Yakima, Washington to Floyd & Mary Fife.

After graduating from Naches High School in 1956, he served in the Navy for two years. He married Shirley Mitchell from the lower valley June 9, 1961. After having three children, he joined the WSP on June 26, 1967, and retired on September 30, 1993. He enjoyed going to car shows with his '57 Chevy as well as camping, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Shirley, daughters - Joni Goodrich and Ed & Lori Lantis; grandchildren - Angela, Jennifer, Justine, and Joshua; great-grandchildren - Michael, Melody, Gisele; brothers - Fred & Jackie of Georgetown, TX, Don & Mari, Butch & Janine, John & Linda, all of Tacoma, Washington. He was preceded in death by his youngest brother Teddy, parents - Floyd & Mary, his special aunt Edna, and his son Brian.

A special thank you to the loving staff at Crescent. Our wonderful friends Dave & Gladys Waterbury, John & Nancy Burgess, Ted & Katie Hosman, and Betty Lantis to name a few. A very special thank you to our granddaughter Angela for helping her grandmother through a very hard time. She is always there when needed.

At Albert's request, there will be no formal service. He will be missed by all of us.

Kenneth Everett Briggs

Kenneth Everett Briggs, 86, of Yakima died Sunday, May 30, 2010.

Mr. Briggs was born in Prosser and raised in Ellensburg. He served in the Armed Forces. He worked most of his life in ministry, serving congregations in Idaho, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Johanna Briggs of Yakima; two sons, Maurice Briggs and Gordon Briggs of Longview, Wash.; two daughters, Dorothy Benson and Barbara Elder, both of Yakima; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Englewood Christian Church in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory.

Ramon Maldonado-Lopez

Ramon Maldonado-Lopez, 53, of Buena died Sunday, May 30, 2010 in Yakima.

Mr. Maldonado-Lopez was born in Michoacán, Mexico, and worked as a laborer on local farms.

Survivors include his wife, Socorro Maldonado-Rosales; two sons, Mario Maldonado and Victor Maldonado; and a daughter, Alma Maldonado.

Private family services will be held.
