Eugene (Gene) Delbert Bridges (Sr.)
Gene was born September 25, 1924 to Thomas Henry and Verena (Kerr) Bridges in Yakima WA, the seventh of their eleven children.
Gene, his parents and siblings moved frequently as his father sought work during the depression, and they eventually lived in nearly every town in the Yakima Valley.
His life, along with his mother, four sisters and five brothers changed drastically when their father was killed in an accident in 1934. The large family struggled as everyone pitched in where and how they could to make ends meet. Gene left high school early to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps to help with family expenses, and then enlisted in the Navy two months before his 18th birthday; he completed Naval Air Gunner's School, received his Air Crew Insignia and served with Patrol Bombing Squadron 215 from 1943 until 1945. After his honorable discharge he received his aircraft and engine mechanic diploma at Perry Tech, and continued his career in aviation mechanics first for United Air Lines, and then flying as a pilot/flight engineer for TWA.
It was the norm to find Dad in the garage, rebuilding small aircraft engines and bodies, sewing and gluing airplane fabric.
Our dad could fix anything and do anything, at least that was the view his five children had of him. He loved life; he always said he had the perfect job, lived a great life and had few regrets. Gene never wavered in his love for his children and gave them everything.
Gene was featured in the book "The story of the Lockheed L-1011" as TWA's first flight engineer for that plane on its maiden voyage. He also flew many international flights on TWA's B-747 before he retired in 1983. Dad loved to travel, and he lived in many cities (always near airports). He spent more time in the Kansas City area where TWA was headquartered, later flew international flights and eventually moved to Albuquerque to be nearer his children. He moved back to his hometown in Yakima in his later years to be nearer his brothers and sisters. There he worked on many projects; including building houses and remodeling his own house, often with the help of his brothers and nephews, and continued his long battle with prostate cancer, which eventually claimed him on May 28, 2010 at his home where he finally went to sleep to wake up in his Lord Jesus' arms.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters (Marian Bridges, infant Annice, and Ruby Strong) and two brothers: Clarence Bridges and Kenneth Bridges. Gene is survived by three brothers all in the Yakima area: Bill & Nydia Bridges, Thomas & Julie Bridges and Gerald Bridges; and two sisters Opal Luisi of Yakima and Vera Roberts in Arizona.. Gene is also survived by his five children: Kathy (Tom) Archibald of Idaho; Deborah Bridges; Eugene Bridges Jr; and Teresa Bridges, all of Albuquerque; and Paul (Tracy) Bridges in Missouri; 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. His children are grateful for the love of his brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews in the Yakima area in Dad's last years.
The family wishes to thank the many providers who helped Dad over the years with his battle with cancer, especially Yakima Memorial Hospice, Dr. Boyd and Dr. Gould. They helped make a difficult time easier for Gene and his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Yakima Memorial Hospice or your favorite cancer charity. In accordance with his wishes, a viewing will be held at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Terrace Heights on Thursday June 3rd at 6pm. Cremation will follow and graveside services will be on Friday June 4th at the Sunnyside Cemetery at 2pm.
His children are comforted by knowing that Dad, who flew so high and proud in life, now lives beyond the stars, safe in God's promise of Eternal Life.
