Rutha Mae Marsh
Rutha Mae Marsh passed into the loving arms of Jesus on May 14, 2010.
She was born Feb 23, 1920 in Longrun, MO to William McKinley and Nora Jane (Hampton) Simpson. Rutha was the oldest of their eleven living children. Though she began working at an early age helping with the care and support of her younger siblings, Rutha often spoke fondly of the times when she and her sisters played by the creek and ran in the hills of their Ozark Mountain home.
In the late 1930s, a fine young man named Earl Marsh came a courtin on a horse, as Ruthie would later describe it. Earl and Rutha were married on Oct. 19, 1940. In their early marriage the two worked on the Marsh family farm where Ruthie, who was already an accomplished cook, perfected her Southern cooking skills preparing meals for the farm hands and their growing family. In 1941 she gave birth to daughter Betty, and in 1945 to son Bervil and in 1952 the Marsh family moved to Yakima. Earl and Ruthie celebrated 58 years of marriage the fall before Earl passed away in 1999.
Ruthie worked primarily in the home, but had many jobs and ventures over the years including many seasons at Del Monte cannery and several years as an Avon lady. She was skilled in many handcrafts, including crocheting, knitting and quilting, and continued to make beautiful blankets for new family babies until recently. Ruthie and Earl realized the dream of having their own farm in 1970 when they moved to Moxee where they raised cattle. No stranger to hard work Ruthie milked the cows, fed the bucket calves, and even helped deliver a few. The two kept a large garden and many people reaped the benefits of their harvests and, for the lucky ones, Ruthie was also the cook. She also enjoyed reading her Bible, and her daily newspaper.
Ruthie never met a stranger. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and in an instant would be exchanging recipes, offering advice or inviting them to church before you knew it. It was because of these kinds of exchanges that so many people beyond her family called her Sister Ruthie, Grandma Marsh, Granny or any number of other terms of endearment.
Most of Ruthie's sisters, also settled in the valley, and she stayed close to all of them her whole life. Together they raised families, gardens, and churches and always remained friends. She was a faithful and devoted wife and mother and loved to play with and spoil her grandchildren. Her family is grateful to have been able to celebrate her 90th birthday earlier this year where she got to hold her newest great grand babies. With a joyful spirit until the end she enjoyed playing bingo, especially with her great granddaughters, and loved visiting with family and friends.
Those she left behind will remember the mischievous glint in her eye, her welcoming wide smile, her infectious laugh, her devotion to God and family, and her big heart that guided us all. A beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend she will be greatly missed but always in our hearts and minds.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Earl; brothers Dallas, Ralph and Manford Simpson; and sisters Sue Monroe and Gladys Prine.
She is survived by her daughter Betty (Ron) Dodge; son Bervil (Shirley) Marsh; sisters Ruby Prine, Meda (Sterlin) Marsh, Hazel Herd, Mildred Phillips, Hildred Allen, and Beulah (Jim) Schelle; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
