Patrice L. Anderson
Patrice Lynn Anderson died June 15th, 2010 in Grandview, Washington after a short but hard-fought battle with stomach cancer.
Born in Seattle on June 17, 1959, she grew up mostly in King County, graduating from Issaquah High School in 1977. Patrice spent summers with her grandparents in Selah, Washington. She loved the sun and eventually made the Yakima Valley her home.
Patrice worked various jobs after high school before accepting a position at Yakima Neighborhood Health Services (YNHS). It was there that she discovered her passion for public health and began working toward her nursing degree. She earned an RN, BSN from Washington State University ICN in 1997. At YNHS, she worked as a public health nurse, case manager, and certified lactation specialist. Later, at Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic she worked as a clinic nurse and supervisor of the women's health division. She furthered her education by attending the University of Washington Physician's Assistant program but found that she missed the "hands-on" aspect of primary nursing. She returned to her commitment of helping underserved populations when she worked on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona for nearly two years. After her diagnosis in December 2009, Patrice reluctantly moved to Mesa, Arizona for specialized oncology care, saddened to leave her patients. Initially hopeful that she could beat the cancer,
Patrice endured aggressive treatment hoping to return to work. She finally returned home in April to live with her family during the final months of her life.
Patrice is remembered as being funny, intelligent, and fiercely independent. She was a compassionate caregiver, gourmet cook and talented gardener. Patrice was a fun-loving friend, outspoken and sarcastic to the end. She was stubborn and determined, never giving up on anything. With all her accomplishments, she was most proud of her daughter, Amanda Jayne Herndon, whom she described as "the love of her life."
She is preceded in death by her sister Amy Anderson. Patrice is survived by her daughter Amanda and son-in-law Frankie, her mother, Carolyn Boyd; her siblings: Paige Lea Alvord (Brian), Boyd Dobbins (Gwen), and Annie Hernandez (Carmen); plus nieces and nephews: Quinn, Selah, William, Clara, Jared, Levi, Anna, Eliza, Zoe, Sydney, and Morgan. She is also survived by her extended family of loyal friends, including Dani, Huston, and Autumn Turcott, who devoted countless hours to her during her last weeks. Her family fervently hopes she is now basking in the sun, eating great food with a fabulous mani-pedi. We would like to thank Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona; North Star Lodge in Yakima; Lower Valley Hospice; and Kozy Shack Pudding.
Please join us in celebrating Patrice's life at the "party with good food" she requested as her memorial which will start at 1:00pm on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Turcott's home at 6702 Mieras Road, Yakima, WA, 98901.
