Murial June Gherman passed away Friday, June 4th, 2010 in her home with her family around her. Murial McCarter was born April 13, 1924 in Eldersley, Saskatchewan, Canada on the family farm to Angus and Thirza (Stevenson) McCarter.
Murial was educated in Eldersley in a two-room schoolhouse and after graduation, was accepted to Regina General Hospital Nursing School, Regina, Sask. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1947. At Regina General Hospital's request, Murial (Mac) also earned her postgraduate degree in Obstetrics from Chicago Lying-In Hospital, Chicago, Ill. She returned to Regina General and worked there in Obstetrics until she decided to move to Alaska to work in the Elmendorf Air Force Hospital in Anchorage. Mac was ever grateful for her nursing career and felt that her family support made it possible for her to accomplish it.
Mac met Ellis J. Gherman, who was stationed in Anchorage while serving in the Air Force. They were married on November 15, 1952. In Alaska they had their oldest daughter. In 1954, after Ellis' release from the service, Mac and Ellis (Gus) moved to Seattle, Washington, where Mac worked in Obstetrics at Swedish Hospital while Gus attended Dental School at the University of Washington. Their second child was born when in Seattle.
Mac and Gus had always wanted to raise their family in a small farming community, so in 1960 they moved to Zillah, Washington, where Gus practiced dentistry. Mac was the bookkeeper for their farm and their dental practice for many years. In Zillah they had their last four children. They enjoyed life with their family, including many years involved in 4-H, riding and training horses, and raising calves. Mac was grateful for her many friends in Zillah and the valley. In 1976, Mac and Gus recommitted their lives and family to the Lord. They joined Valley Covenant Community of Zillah, and served in the Union Gospel Mission and the Yakima County Jail.
Mac enjoyed her grandchildren and all their activities. She loved gardending, bird watching, and traveling to see old friends and new places. She loved playing and watching baseball all her life, and was a die-hard Huskies, Mariner and Seahawks fan. Although she loved her native Canada, she was very proud of earning her American citizenship later in life. She was very passionate about the preservation of liberty and our Godly heritage in America for her children and grandchildren's future.

Caroline H. Madson
Caroline's life began November 6, 1915 on the family farm at Doland, South Dakota. The first child of four other siblings born to Wilhelm and Hilda (Claussen) Hagemann, Caroline was also the last surviving child having died peacefully on June 1, 2010 at home with daughter Margaret holding her hand. As a child the German language was spoken exclusively in the home until mother began attending the one room school house. Mother was soon teaching her younger sister and three brothers the English language.
With husband Edgar Robert Overdorf and son Roland, the family residence was established in Indiana where twin daughters, Eunice and Margaret, were born. They then moved to Buena Park in southern California. Information of Washington State's dam construction brought them to Grandview in 1949. Mother's public related career began as a waitress at the Blue Bird Cafe. After that, mother crossed the street to the Grandview Herald where she applied her writing skills. Mother's next and final place of employment was at Grandview City Hall as City Clerk, from which position she retired in 1981. Upon retirement she and Howard Madson married and moved to Woodburn, Oregon. For twelve years, friends and relatives were welcomed into their home. They also traveled extensively within the United States and abroad. Ten years after Howard's death she returned to the Yakima Valley in 2003 becoming a member of her daughter Margaret and Bob Van Dyke's family in Yakima.
Mother's extra activities centered around the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. Being a charter member of Prosser's Messiah Lutheran Church, she was on the building committee, and active as a Sunday School Teacher, choir member, and youth leader. Mother was also committed to the Lutheran Womens Missionary League in which she served the Lord in numerous capacities. After moving to Woodburn, Oregon, mother continued her involvement with the LWML; conducted home Bible studies; and enrolled in creative writing classes.
Mother is survived by three children: son Roland (Jean) Overdorf of Battle Ground, WA; daughters Eunice (Dale, deceased) Leach of Yakima, WA; and Margaret (Robert) Van Dyke of Yakima, WA. Six grandchildren: Craig (Christy) Overdorf of Goldendale, WA; Brent (Sylvia) Overdorf of Portland, OR; Kannon (Laurie) Leach of Yakima, WA; Sarah (Justin) Pietsch of Bothell, WA; Leah (Lynn, Jr.) Mickles of Yakima, WA; and Aaron Van Dyke of Ann Arbor, MI. To Pastor Mike Bailey: Thank you for your commitment, compassion, and love to mother and the immediate family.
A celebration of Caroline's life will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 801 Tieton Drive, Yakima, WA 98902. A luncheon will follow at the residence of Eunice Leach.
Memorial contributions may be made in Caroline's memory to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or to a favorite charity.
Mother constantly encouraged her family to "Stay close to the Lord." This verse from the hymn "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" states our Christian hope of eternity with Jesus:
When here our pathways part,
We suffer bitter pain;
Yet, one in Christ and one in heart,
We hope to meet again.
