Elaine Joy Ashlock
TOPPENISH - "In the same way, you are sad for a time, but I shall see you again; then your hearts will rejoice with a JOY no one can take from you." -John 16:22
Saturday, September 11, 2010 - Our cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, relative, Godmother, and friend, Elaine Joy Ashlock, 73, of Toppenish, WA, went home to be with her heavenly Father. She had courageously endured a lengthy illness and peacefully entered into eternal rest.
Elaine was the last remaining child of John "Jack" and Louise Matthews McFarland. She was born at home in Lapwai on May 10, 1937. Her father passed away when she was a baby. Her mother remarried Daniel Higheagle and they raised her and her siblings at their home in Lapwai.
She was a proud member of the Nez Perce Tribe. Her Nez Perce name was 'ewyiin (Wounded). Her paternal grandparents were Francis McFarland and Rebecca Blackeagle. Her maternal grandparents were Linus Matthews and Emma Pinkham. She was a direct descendant of Red Grizzly Bear, Old Chief Joseph, and Twisted Hair.
As a child, her great grandmother, Elizabeth Pinkham, lived with her family. She was raised knowing the Nez Perce language and customs, including the medicine dance and food gathering. When her family traveled to Clarkia to get huckleberries, they camped in tipis.
She attended the Gunther's Dance School in Lapwai where she learned tap dance. Her mother made her dance outfits for their community performances. This experience helped her later when she became a majorette in high school. She also participated in Girl's League, Science Club, Future Homemakers of America, Drama, and worked on the staff of the library and annual. Elaine graduated from Lapwai High School in 1956.
In her teenage years, Elaine was known to be a devoted Christian. She led many of her family and friends to active participation in the church. After high school, she studied for one year at the Mount Angel Catholic School in Portland, OR. She remained faithful to her religious practices throughout her life and found comfort in her final days in prayer and in song. She kept her rosary close to her and would hang it around her neck for blessed assurance.
She married Max Corpuz Jr. in November 1958. They made their home in Toppenish and were blessed with six children, Barry, Sidney, Kyle, Linnea, Laurie, and Jerry. Although they later divorced, they had many good years together and created a lasting legacy with their children and grandchildren.
On New Year's Eve in 1970, Elaine married David Ashlock in Carson City, NV. With the addition of their child Sonda, the family was now complete. Elaine and Dave were very devoted to each other and enjoyed life together to the fullest.
Elaine lived in Toppenish for 52 years. Over the years, she had a variety of occupations. She was a garment factory worker, Avon saleswoman, fruit warehouse worker, and bartender. Elaine was a talented seamstress and accomplished in beadwork and weaving. Besides making items for her family, she also sold her work, often at her mother's craft table.
She had a full life and often enjoyed the simple pleasures. She loved the adventure of getting in the car and hitting the road, this included regular cruises to the mountains and annual trips to Chief Joseph Days, Pendleton Roundup, and Mud Springs Days. It brought her great joy to spend time with her grandchildren and have family gatherings at her home in Toppenish and her home in Lapwai. One special talent she had was as a "matchmaker," who brought couples together and led to many happy years of marriage and family life.
She was a member of the St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Toppenish. She supported the Kateri Prayer Circle and prayed for the sainthood of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha. When she passed away, she was faithfully donating to over 30 charities that supported American Indian children, Catholic causes, disease research and support, and disaster relief.
Elaine often gave special names to others and her own nickname was "Possee." She was known for her quick wit and good natured teasing. She had a light laugh and loved to tell stories. One of her recent favorites was remembering when she was a child and her grandma Nora told her a story about the renowned Jim Thorpe. She was encouraged to remember his name, so Elaine recalls walking to school and rapidly repeating to herself, "Jim Thorpe, Jim Thorpe, Jim Thorpe..." This made her giggle and brought a smile to those who heard it, like happened so often when she shared her humor and memories.
She is survived by her sons Barry Corpuz Sr. (and his children Barry Jr., Ellen, and grandchild Luis), Kyle Corpuz, and Jerry Corpuz (and his children Stephen and Zoe), all of Toppenish; her daughters Sidney Corpuz (and her daughter Neomi), Linnea Corpuz (and her husband Wally Twinn and their son Leif), all of Toppenish, Laurie Lacour (and her daughters Lucinda and Loni) of Lawrence, KS, and Sonda Ashlock (and her husband Craig Twinn and their children Marisa, Dylan, Jessie, Mercedes, David, Jacquelin and Jordan) of Yakima, WA; her sisters Carol Wheeler, Sandra Higheagle, Georgia Barros (and her husband Mike), and Rosa Yearout (and her husband Jon), all of Lapwai; her brothers James Higheagle (and his wife Beverly) of Kamiah, Tony Higheagle Sr. (and his wife Evelyn), Gordon Higheagle Sr. (and his wife Loretta), and Kevin Ellenwood (and his wife Susie), all of Lapwai; and numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives.
Elaine was preceded in death by her grandparents and parents; her husband David Ashlock; her brothers Francis John McFarland, Larry McFarland Sr., and Ronald McFarland; her sisters Patricia Higheagle and Georgine Higheagle Fiander; grandchildren Tashiana Corpuz and infant Twinn-babies; and great grandchild Michael Corpuz.
On Monday, September 13, a viewing and rosary was held at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The family then traveled to Lapwai and hosted a rosary and memorial services at 7:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14, at Sacred Heart Church in Lapwai. The Rev. John Shaw of Toppenish (Elaine's pastor and friend) will officiate. Burial will be at Jonah Cemetery near Sweetwater.
The family suggests donations in her memory to the national Kateri Tekakwitha office, Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, or Running Strong for American Indian Youth.
"Thank you God for the honor and blessing of Elaine Joy in our lives. We are forever grateful."
