John "Jack" Henry Thom, Jr.
John "Jack" Henry Thom, Jr. sadly left us Friday, September 10th, 2010 with his family around him to join God in Heaven. Jack was born at home to John and Dottie Thom on December 4th, 1932 in Lavina, Montana. Jack attended high school in Moore, Montana and was a star basketball and football player and accomplished trumpet player. He traveled throughout Montana playing with his mother Dottie on the organ and father John on the saxophone in the Thom Orchestra. He attended the University of Montana, but college was cut short due to a draft notice for the Korean War. Just before being drafted into the Army he married his first wife Darlene. He traveled France and Germany with the Army for 2 years, but was called home for an emergency, his daughter Vicky Lynn, died in childbirth. He had finished his time in the military and settled in Billings, Montana to start a family, Ronald was born in 1958, Sheree in 1960, and Doug in 1962. Doug passed away of cancer in 2007.
Jack was a true salesman at heart, and traveled throughout Montana with the Buttrey's store, where he met his second wife Gail in Butte, Montana. They married in 1970 and began Jack's second family in Anaconda, Montana, Jennifer was born in 1971, Corey in 1973 and Michael in 1978.
Jack and Gail moved their family to the East Valley area of Yakima, Washington in 1980, where Jack managed shopping malls for First Union, including the Valley Mall in Union Gap. His work allowed him to travel the world, including stints in Denmark, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and Hawaii. Jack and Gail retired and bought a home in Moxee in 2000, and have since been highly involved in the Holy Rosary Church, both singing in the church choir. Jack's hobbies included riding his Harley Trike, working in the yard with his wife and watching ANY sport on TV, especially his beloved Dallas Cowboys. It's simple, if you knew Jack, you couldn't help but love him, he was just one of those people that touched lives without even trying.
Jack is survived by his wife Gail, with whom he celebrated their 40th just days before his passing. He is also survived by his sister Patty, his 5 children, Ron (Audrey), Sheree (Dave), Jennifer, Corey (Desiree') and Michael, and 4 grandchildren, Cody, Kelly, Katie and Jacquelyn.
The family wishes to thank all the many thoughtful expressions of sympathy, flowers, food and cards which are deeply appreciated.
A recitation of the rosary will be held at 7 pm this Friday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Moxee. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 am Saturday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery, then reception at Holy Rosary Hall.
Edith Allene Brandhagen
Edith Allene Brandhagen, 90, of Yakima died Thursday, September 9 at Landmark Care Center. Mrs. Brandhagen was born in Toppenish. She worked as a chef in the Seattle area.
Survivors include a son, Gordon Brandhagen Jr. of Lynnwood, Wash.; three daughters, Kaye Henson of Tampico, Jeanene Hunt of Yakima and Trudie Gilley of Bellevue, Wash.; two sisters, Ramona Fletcher of Ellensburg and Roberta Allen of Benton City; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory, Yakima.
Harold Everett
Harold Everett, 81, of Grandview died Sept. 9 at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center. Mr. Everett was born in Ohio. He was a farmer in the Lower Valley.
Survivors include his wife, Idella Everett of Grandview; three sons, Richard Everett of Wisconsin, Ronnie Everett and Shawn Everett of Wenatchee; two daughters, Donna Everett of Grandview and Melinda Maltanado of California; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please call the family for date and place. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home, Sunnyside.
Howard Duane Scarlett
Howard Duane Scarlett went home to be with the Lord on September 7, 2010. He was born in Bellingham, WA on February 7, 1935 to Howard and Beulah Scarlett. He has lived in the Yakima Valley for 46 years. Howard attended school in Bellingham and then went onto Washington State College where he met his wife of 54 years, Ruth Armstrong. Howard is survived by wife Ruth, three children, Fred, Will & wife Jill and Karin & husband Mike Argo; six grandchildren, Amy & husband Derek Brown, Abby & Jacob Scarlett, Weston, Rachel and Matthew Argo and one great grandson, Cooper Brown.
Howard began his business life shining shoes in a Bellingham barber shop when he was 12 years old. He made 20˘ + 2 tax tokens per shine. He even had a business license. In addition to shining shoes he had to sweep, mop and wax the floor plus wash the windows to pay “rent”.
After graduation with a degree in Agriculture from WSC he worked on a cattle ranch in Bickleton, was a partner in a construction business with his father, sold insurance, was an inspector for USDA and then bought his first orchard in the Buena area, in 1969. The orchard business grew to 200 acres which is now operated by his son Will.
Howard is an Eagle Scout, his sons and grandsons following in his footsteps. Howard loved being with his family and especially on holidays, birthdays, campouts, and watching his grandkids sporting events. He loved the outdoors and spent many seasons hunting with his friend Chuck Wolverton, packing in with horses and mules to beautiful pristine areas. Horses were important to Howard his whole life. He was proud to win the National Cutting Horse open and $10,000 non-pro championships in 1987 with his horse, Plastic Money. He was an active member of Toppenish Calvary Bible Church, Toppenish Rodeo Board and Toppenish Western Art Association.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Beulah Scarlett.
If desired, remembrances may be made to Calvary Bible Church-missions.
The family would like to give special thanks to Memorial Hospice and Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
Graveside service will be at Zillah Cemetery Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 1:00pm. Memorial service will be Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 2:00pm at Calvary Bible Church, 105 Goldendale Avenue, Toppenish, WA 98948. Following pie will be served in honor of Howard’s favorite dessert. Arrangements in care of Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah.
Delbert William St. George
Delbert William St. George, 81, of Yakima died Sunday, September 5.
Mr. St. George was born in Yakima and served in the Air Force. He worked as a dispatcher for the Grandview Police Department.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred St. George of Yakima; two sons, William St. George of Lake Chelan, Wash., and Donald St. George of Grandview; four daughters, Phyllis Partch of Yakima, Nancy Miller of Benton City, Betty Clark of Longview, Wash., and Colleen Naylor of Moscow, Idaho; a brother, Ernie St. George of Yakima; two sisters, Mary Lou DeLameter of Aberdeen, Wash., and Judy Senecal of Yakima; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 9 at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 10 in Tahoma Cemetery. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery.
Julie A. Gray
Julie Hindorff-Schwindt-Gray crossed over on Friday, September 3, 2010 and initiated her quintessential concert tour with the Lord’s heavenly hosts. A wonderful Christian, friend, wife, mother and teacher, Julie will be missed by the thousands whose lives were enhanced by her touch. Julie was laid to rest on September 17, in Cody, Wyoming.
A native of Cody, Wyoming, Julie was born on January 11, 1941, the daughter of Connie & Jim Hindorff. She was a graduate of Cody High School, class of 1959. Julie earned her Baccalaureate degree at Colorado State College [The University of Northern Colorado], Greeley, Colorado, with a major in English and a minor in music. She was a post-graduate student at many Rocky Mountain area universities. While attending CSC, Julie was a member of the select Choral Aires, the USAF ROTC Angel Flight, Alpha Phi International Fraternity, and performed as jazz vocalist. As Miss CSC, Julie earned runner-up in the Miss Colorado pageant; a testimony to her competitiveness, her talents, and her beauty.
A gifted educator, teaching creative writing and English for 18 years, Julie not only inspired her students, but also inspired her fellow educators. Julie served as a chair of Cody High School’s English Department, served in the leadership of The Cody Education Association, the Wyoming Education Association, and the National Education Association. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary education fraternity for women teachers. Most recently, Julie served as the Administrative Assistant to the Mayor and City Supervisor for the City of Selah.
Those who knew Julie considered her a safe haven; and a true treasure. They valued her accessibility, her excitement and her caring. Julie is remembered for her yesterdays and she will be remembered across many tomorrows. Julie was always teaching, leading, laughing, and singing. She was always a supporter of education and the arts. As a member of several choirs, Julie shared her rich voice to tour and sing in many countries.
Julie was preceded in death by her parents; two of her brothers; Don Hindorff and Ed Hindorff; and her first husband, J.T. Schwindt. She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Gray (Lander, Wyoming) of Yakima, Washington; a brother, Jim Hindorff of Westchester, Pennsylvania; a son, J.J. Schwindt and family of Cody, Wyoming; a daughter, Kathy Bensch and family of Yakima, Washington; several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.
A Musical Memorial Service of Celebration & Fellowship will be at Noon, Saturday, November 20, at The Seasons Concert Hall, 101 North Naches Avenue, Yakima, WA. Officiating: Reverend David Helseth; assisted by Kent Roberts [Englewood Christian Church], and Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima.
